Getting Better All The Time

Good Morning!

I have noticed some dramatic changes in my attitude from when I moved here a year ago.  One year ago, I was terrified to drive here, but now I realize there is only one way to go out and have a successful shoe shopping spree--jump in the car and go, baby go!  One year ago, I laughed at the people stopping at the little Coffee drive throughs, but now, two of them know me by name.  A year ago, I never thought that I had EVER met such a high concentration of rude and unhappy people, but now, I realize, for the most part, that it was my perception, and given half a chance, there are some really wonderful people in this burg.  A year ago, all I could think about was saving money and going back to Colorado, but now, I make sure I have a couple of twenties in my bag for Chuy's Bike Night.  A year ago, I hated it here, but now, I am beginning to realize why Bakersfield has grown.  What all you 'locals' take for granted, I am beginning to appreciate, and am surprised everyday by just how much this city has to offer.  Take a minute a think about the good stuff here, quit bitching about the traffic and the heat...take a deep breath, refocus, and think about the cool things that this place to offer.  I know I do, because even after a year, I find out new things, I find new places, and I meet new people that lead to me to one thought..."It really ain't so bad here."  Pay it Forward.

Glad you're growing to love Bakersfield too!  (Just don't breathe TOO deeply--LOL).  The heat, the air pollution are big minuses, and the traffic is getting worse and will continue to worsen for the foreseeable future.  But those things aside, Bakersfield is not such a bad place, and I can think of worse.  Hey--it's not Detroit!  (proposed new motto).  And one of the best things about Bakersfield is our location and proximity to EVERYTHING!  International airport, snowy mountains, surging sea, cruises and more, all just a couple hours distant.  And all this without mentioning the growth of community and activities here in town itself.

Bakersfield is shaping up alright as long as we keep our civic planners on the right side, looking out for us, we can continue building a right proper and proud community!

Glad to hear you're happy.  I was in Aurora for a couple years in the late 90's and it took me aobut six months just to thaw out;)  (I moved in Feb.)  I hated it with a passion for about that long and suddenly one day about a year or so after moving, I too realized how happy I was, and was so sad that I had to leave:)  Enjoy Bakersfield, and if you go back to Co.anytime soon, kiss it hello for me;)

Under your "Cool New People" picture, your name is "niceboo..."

Imagine my disappointment.

Lol~try to buck up Robb! Welcome to B-field niceboots~this post nicely illustrates my theory of "you find what you look for",and I glad you went for good instead of bad.Home is indeed where you make it.I was born and braised here, this city is changing fast~here's to the best future we can make.

Ok sage - I know it's hot now but were you really "braised" here? :)

And niceboots - glad you're learning to appreciate it here. We do have some good shoe stores here - that's one of my weaknesses.

Robb, I had *EXACTLY* the same letdown reflex...

What is this disappointment thing ya'll are on????  What I do?  Grrrrrrr.....

Niceboots, since we don't think like men, it took me a few minutes too.  Since they only saw "niceboo" they were filling in the blanks on their own and they WEREN'T thinking boots.

I have the same disappointment when I'm traveling down an unfamiliar street and I see a store advertising "BOO_".

.

I whip a fast u-turn as soon as it's safe and wind up massively disappointed when I find it's "BOOTS" not "BOOKS."

posted by niceboots on Jul 11, 2007 at 03:36 PM

Oh I get it.....cuuuuuttteeee.  Hmmm.  Yes, folks, it is NICEBOOTS.  It is an old saying from my college days.  I went to a very conservative southern college, and we could not look at a man's backside and say, "Nice umm," well you know.  So we started saying "Nice Boots" instead....Sorry for the disappointment guys....books are good, too you know.  Lots of BOO words are good...let's see there is BOOZE, BOOKS, BOOTS, BOOKWORM, BOOBOO, plain ol' BOO, Betty BOOP, and yes guys, even BOO---.  Have a great one!!!

I'm a bit surprised that you're happy with the shoe stores here. I have to go out of town (LA, "the valley" or Vegas) to get anything cool, but I'm a hetero guy with an unnatural shoe obsession. Seems like all we get here are last years fashions.

Hey Pete--

I can find shoes anywhere!  I must agree about the selection, although, I do not follow the trends exclusively, I follow my own path so I really do not have  the fashion sense to complain about the shoe selection here, lol.  Honestly, I could find shoes I like on a desert island....

Have you ever been to the Fashion Show Mall in Vegas? Now *that's* a place to find some shoes. If only I could afford them.

Truth, though.  I have had that experience with...boots.

Niceboots, at first you seemed like a nice lady, but knowing you and your gal friends used to look as us men's "backsides", instead of looking at us for our brains, makes me wonder.... :) And you forgot "Bootylicious".

A lady went into a bar in Waco and saw a cowboy with his feet propped up
on a table. He had the biggest boots she'd ever seen.

The woman asked the cowboy if it's true what they say about men with big
feet? The cowboy grinned and said, "Shore is, little lady. Why don't you come on out to the bunkhouse and let me prove it to you?"

The woman wanted to find out for herself, so she spent the night with
him. The next morning she handed him a $100 bill. Blushing, he said,
"Well, thankee, ma'am. Ah'm real flattered. Ain't nobody ever paid me
fer mah services before."

"Don't be flattered," she said. "Take the money and buy yourself some
boots that fit."

OldBlue, it *IS* true what they say about us guys with big feet:  We gotta buy big shoes.

.

Only "plus" is that the factory outlet stores and sale tables quite often have size 13's to offer.  The minus is that the regular racks rarely do. :)

AnonCon~yes I was "braised here" lol..sweat/heat/no air = braising!I thunk that up around the time of stay/play/sun/fun...way too much free time on my hands.

You will hear us life time and long time residents bitch and moan about the rapid growth and terrible traffic in Bako all of the time. Just remember this, we love this town and will fight to the death to defend it. We know a good thing when we see it. And yes, we will talk to you and welcome you, it is hard to get some of us to shut up sometimes, I know, I am one of those. Some people from bigger cities are sometimes "taken aback" by me when I strike up a conversation with a total stranger, some are nice and open up and engage with me and others are like "How dare you talk to me, I don't even know you", oh well thats just me. Watch out because it might be you some day, LOL. I never have done the Chuys' thing, but I am a karaoke junkie (two or three times a week). Anyhoo, welcome (one year later), maybe I'll run in to you somewhere, you'll know, I will be the stranger who strikes up a conversation with you.

Am I the only one slightly concerned by hetero-progressivepete's unnatural shoe obsession?!!

gsisola, all of those people that look at you like you're a freak for talking to them, those are probably the transplants from L.A. and all of those other crappy Ca. cities.

I heart Bako:)

You came to the right place Bakersfield, as for Boots, in Bakersfield they are a must....the sh** gets deep in this place.

Easy does it there Cee Cee...I'm an L.A. transplant (in 1986), and I, like gsisola, get the dirty looks from people that I try to strike up conversations with.  Gsisola, if you ever run into me and want to chit-chat, I'll be glad to talk to you!

Well, you seem nice enough Pam;)  I won't call you names, I promise;)  But I still think it's a crappy city.

posted by pamg on Jul 12, 2007 at 12:08 PM
As do I Cee Cee.  How do you think I wound up here?  I'm actually not from L.A. proper, but rather a small suburb that until recent years, nobody knew existed.  (I wish it had stayed that way!)

Now looky here, ya'll...I lived in Small Town Colorado for dang near 17 years.  There is no harm in striking a conversation up with anyone anywhere.  Small neighborliness (is that even a word?) does not ONLY have its place in a small town.  I loved small town life, well, once they quit talking about or I quit caring about the rumors(OK, I had FUN with it and GAVE them somethin' to talk about...lol)...happiness may be where you find it, but contentment comes from the soul.  Yes, it is a little daunting here in the Big City at times, but its ok.  The opportunities to thrive here are available--it takes the same amount of energy to bitch and moan as it does to find the positive.  I ain't saying it is all sunshine and puppy dogs (I prefer moonbeams and faieries), but it ain't the end of the world.   City growth and expansion does have its price, but we all have to just keep plugging along, looking for that one perfect pair of shoes....
