Bishops sound alarm on Obamacare

I share the Creative Minority Report's pleasant surprise over the U.S. Catholic bishops' move to have every single parish be informed this weekend of a "massive and urgent appeal [that] may be unprecedented in our history as Catholics in America.": http://www.creativeminority...

The opposition to Obamacare recently prompted Congressman Patrick Kennedy to lecture the bishops about this issue, which in turn caused him to be given the smackdown (take your pick from the list): http://www.catholicblogs.co...

Looks like the sword that Christ said he came to bring instead of peace is nicely doing its job in separating the chaff from the wheat.

“You mean to tell me the Catholic Church is going to be denying those people life saving health care? I thought they were pro-life?”

Sounds like a pretty reasonable paradox to point out...

Wimsta, the church is pro-life from the womb to the tomb. Unfortunately the Democrats, particularly the Catholic dissidents among their flock, can't say that. They sacrifice the littlest among us on the altar of Moloch and are too quick to pull the plug on the likes of Terri Schiavo.

I agree with Sean Hannity on his prediction tonight on how this is going to play out: The Democrats are going to ram through portions of the health care bill and pay a heavy political price for it.

Abortion is no doubt a politically volatile one, as is developing a National Health Care Plan, and everything else these days.

"From the womb to the tomb" maybe catchy (inaccurate in my opinion) but in this case it is certainly not consistent. It is not a true paradox, and there are clearly other choices, however it is problematic. But, we clearly don't need to compare the value of a featus with any other life...

Render unto caesar what is caesars ... catholics are not supposed to be political .

And this illustrates the contradiction I see with churches lobbying legislatures. How do people choose to do what is godly and moral if they don't have a choice. I've always understood that the church opens the door for sinners, not force them through it. How can one be a good christian if he/she is forced to be one by legislation?

Especially when that church has done lost its theological and moral integrity, it can not be political. Think of the kind of message that sends to our young people.

I have been a "cafateria catholic" for quite awhile now. If this letter appears in the St. Francis parish this Sunday, I'm through.

Churches,stay out of politics!

Who needs Obamacare when you have this?- http://www.youtube.com/watc...>http://www.google.com/url?q...

Congress should just allocate healthcare money to TBN.

The issue is that it is likely that Obamacare will, regardless of the current denials by Democrats, require ALL hospitals, including Catholic hospitals, to perform abortions or shut down.  Catholic hospitals would, then, close.  What will Obama and Pelosi do then?  Declare martial law and take control of the Catholic hospitals?

You know, Midterm, I looked for something that supported what you're saying, I just could not find it.

I wonder if you can help me with that.

"The issue is that it is likely that Obamacare will, regardless of the current denials by Democrats, require ALL hospitals, including Catholic hospitals, to perform abortions or shut down."

... you think ?

That martial law thing has got me kinda concerned - where did you read that ?

Virg, midterm was just asking a rhetorical question about whether Obama and Pelosi would declare martial law. I haven't heard of such a threat, although I did come across this musing during a search of the Net:

The President has even proven willing to use healthcare reform to target the elderly, recasting human life in terms of the collective good. The White House has even urged fellow citizens to inform on opponents of Obama’s healthcare bill. In this environment, the prospect of martial law doesn’t sound that far-fetched.

But isn’t this unconstitutional? No matter. The Constitution means nothing to President Obama, who has repeatedly implied
the need to “break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution….”

And there's another tidbit that I spotted on infowars.com, about an EU panel issuing a statement to Catholic doctors that they'd better perform abortions, or else: http://www.infowars.com/art...

Too bad, Pogo. It's one thing for the church to support a certain candidate; it's entirely another thing to support or oppose certain issues that involve the core teachings of the church. If the government is expecting its members to fund abortions, it sure as hell has every right to speak out against it: http://www.foxnews.com/poli...

P.S. Pogo, do you blow a spring when the church dares speak out on behalf of the illegal immigrants--that they be treated with dignity even though they should render unto Caesar by obeying the immigration laws?

posted by pogo on Oct 31, 2009 at 10:26 AM

When the church comes out against the death penalty, then I'll listen to them on the abortion issue. I have never heard any local church speak to illegals.

C'mon, man.  What savvy politician would do that?

I have never heard any local church speak to illegals.

They're busy watching TBN and catching a healing from Benny Hinn.
