Immigration showdown at the Bako Corral
The Bakersfield City Council's agenda tonight is four pages long, but all the attention and time will be spent on four little lines: the immigration proposals. The are three resolutions on tap: 1. Declaring English the official language of Bakersfield 2. Affirming that Bakersfield is not a sanctuary city and that Bakersfield police will cooperate with federal agencies. Both of those are from Councilman David Couch. 3. Recommending the federal government enforce and reform its laws, pay local governments the cost of dealing with illegal immigrants, and affirming that Bakersfield police will cooperate with federal agencies. That's from Councilwoman Sue Benham. So far, public comment at council meetings has been overwhelmingly against Couch's proposals; but several council members say the calls and e-mails they've gotten have been overwhelmingly in favor. As far as I can tell, there are three big things that could happen: 1. Couch's resolutions both pass. 2. Couch's resolutions both fail. 3. Someone moves to amend the agenda and removes the items entirely, so no vote on the resolutions themselves is ever taken. The meeting will be live on KGOV, channel 16 on Bright House cable, beginning at 6:30, although the good part isn't expected until 7 or 7:15. And it's probably going to be the most interesting thing on TV tonight, far surpassing The Bionic Woman. -- James Geluso 19 comments from 15 users

A meaningless declaration, an worthless affirmation and a non-binding recommendation It gladdens my heart to see a city council grappling with the nuts-and-bolts decisions necessary to keep their community top-notch... posted by

I'm with Sue Benham. Let our federal government do its job( though they're complete eunuchs), it's not the scope of Bakersfield. The only thing Couch's proposals offer is divisiveness.
If illegal immigrants get nervous by all this and choose to return home, great! But questionable, unenforceable laws are wasting everyone's time. posted by

I'm not angry at the immigrants, never have been. I'm angry at the public officials (past and present) who were entrusted to secure our border and enforce the laws we have on the books but chose not to. They should be arrested and charged with treason.

I say clean up the camps we used in WWII and put all of the ILLEGALS in them until they decide to fill out the proper paper work to become citizens or get on the bus back to Mexico. They are BREAKING THE LAW and should not have any rights. PS The police could arrest the law breakers tonight when they come to protest. It would be an easy round up of illegals. posted by

PS: What is the legal punishment (jailtime, fines, etc.) for being in this country without a valid visa or passport? posted by

So far, public comment at council meetings has been overwhelmingly against Couch's proposals That stands to reason. People picket stores they don't like, but don't picket stores they do like. Same rationale. what if they get nervous and go to Fresno? Most of them live on the west side of 99 in the lousy part of town. I'm moving up there next year to finish getting my degree at CSUF, which is on the east side of 99 in a much nicer area. I'll read about the arrests in the paper. I say clean up the camps we used in WWII and put all of the ILLEGALS in them until they decide to fill out the proper paper work to become citizens or get on the bus back to Mexico. The internment camps that remain are national historic sites or national monuments. A relatively inexpensive idea is to build "tent city" jails in the desert like Sheriff Joe Arpaio has in Maricopa County, AZ. Meals cost the county eight cents apiece: "In 2005, Arizona passed a law making it a felony, punishable by up to 2 years in jail, to smuggle someone across the border. Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has issued a legal opinion that those being smuggled can be considered co-conspirators to the smuggling and thusly can be charged under the same law. Under this opinion, Arpaio has instructed his deputies and members of his civilian posse to round up and arrest suspected illegal aliens. Arpaio said, 'My message is clear: If you come here and I catch you, you're going straight to jail…I'm not going to turn these people over to federal authorities so they can have a free ride back to Mexico. I'll give them a free ride to my jail.' One of Arpaio's unorthodox practices includes the requirement that these inmates sing 'God Bless America' and the 'Star Spangled Banner.' Judge Thomas O'Toole ruled in June, 2006 that the sheriff's interpretation is correct, and the illegal aliens can be tried as co-conspirators." Sheriff Joe also makes them work on chain gangs, including the women.

If people want to be angry over lousy working conditions, shrinking benefits, declining wages and deflationary assets in this country they should focus their attention on unregulated unrestrained monopolistic business practices which have decimated the middle class.

I am currently watching the city council meeting on the internet and on tv... First of all I want to say I SUPPORT Mr. Couch. But my point is these public speakers don't deserve to stand up and speak their mind. They can't even follow the rules at the city council. Most of them talk too much even tho the mayor was telling them not to. They extended the time limit and many couldn't speak because of others hogging the time... I have seen enough.. the council voted down english as our language... BUT California has it a state language. YeAH!
I have stated many time before.. English is the ONLy language to be seen and heard when doing business.
I was impressed by the lady council, she stated as I have in the past blogs. When you go to someones country, you learn THEIR language and respect their ways. posted by
