WHY DO POLITICAL WIVES DO IT?
What’s with these guys in high powered, highly visible political posts who engage in risky sexual behavior – and get caught? And what’s with their wives who “stand by their men” – propped up at their husbands’ confessional press conferences? Dianne Hardisty Editorial Page Editor 29 comments from 13 users

Remember when Hillary, Chelsea, and Bill - in that order - walked to the helicopter after the truth came out about Monica? Hillary wasn't looking too supportive. posted by

Wives stay with their husband because it is nothing else to do. We have to quit being so hard on these men who make the same mistake as other men who are not politicians. We must remember others are doing it and have not been caught, they are just as guilty as the politicians who are caught. These wives are right presenting a solid front for the media because in reality we know what is going on and going down. This society has to stop kicking a man when he is down. We should let him know he is forgiven. The only thing that concerns me is if the money being used is taxpayers money or his own money. It is quite different if it is his money. He has a right to spend his money anyway he wants to. We know that morally it is wrong to hire a prostitute, engage in homosexuasl activity and engage in obscene activity in a public place. If our society want public officials to be perfect , it is not going to happen. posted by

Running for public office, being in public office, implies that an elected official's life is in a fishbowl. Goes with the territory. Personal behavior, including relatives', childrens', wife's, are exposed for the public view. Perfectly stupid to do something that will humiliate one's friends and family. I know office holders usually don't do anything beyond making wrong choices or giving in to temptation than any Joe Average guy. But an elected office holder also has the public trust. He is going to be held to a higher standard of conduct than Joe Average. That also goes with the territory. posted by

The wives of professional athletes worry that their husbands will be injured. The wives of politicians worry that their husbands will be "outed". posted by

We must remember others are doing it and have not been caught, they are just as guilty as the politicians who are caught. "Others" don't claim they're going to clean up New York as a campaign promise. This society has to stop kicking a man when he is down. We should let him know he is forgiven. That's the American way, and every other society's way, because he is not forgiven. In your culture, the man makes the rules and the woman takes the blame, so you have no choice but to forgive a philandering husband, because he's the man. In other cultures that are much more sensible, that doesn't happen. posted by

Interested to see how this shakes out. Sounds like he actually did hire a call girl, but then he wouldn't be the first Democratic Governor framed by the Bush inJustice Department. posted by

Yes, Anglo, he is. On a side note, $4200 bucks?!?!?! Really? I hope he resigns just because I don't want someone who overpays that much in charge of any state budget. As Lily has kindly pointed out, the going rate is much cheaper. posted by

He's already admitted to it. Heidi Fleiss said the reason they ratted out Spitzer was because he treated the women like whores, whereas more successful men than Spitzer hire call girls but treat them with respect and decency, and this is why no one ever blows the whistle on them. What Democratic governor did Bush frame?

JohnBurns, where does she say that? Also, my understanding is that he wasn't ratted out. He was busted because he was shifting money around. posted by

Spitzer must resign if he has committed a criminal act. You know how oral sex isn't really sex? Well, engaging in sex with prostitutes "isn't really a criminal act," so far-left types like Alan Dershowitz claim that Spitzer doesn't have to resign David Letterman: "Spitzer came to the press conference with yellow crime scene tape wrapped around his pants." posted by

Um, except he wasn't ratted out and Heidi is just guessing. She also dislikes him because he prosecuted prostitution rings. posted by

This is just so sweet. The Dems were screaming to have a congressman resign for sticking his hand under a bathroom stall during a police setup. Now that a high ranking dem has been using taxpayer money to pork some chick, everything is just A-OK. In fact it is Bush's fault for having the IRS enforce rules to protect the public from corrupt politicians. Sweet... I wonder if the Dems are going to force this disgrace to give up his SUperdelegate status. Probably not, since he has pledged to Hillary. And we all know the Democratic party is controlled by Hillary. Nice system. You got the candidate who is losing making statements that she will make the current leader her running mate... And these stupid phuckers want to run my health care?? posted by

None of this interests me. What interests me is the conversation leading up to the woman standing by her man when he admits he cheated on her in public. Well, hon, I have some bad news for you. I cheated on you with high-priced call girls. The damn newspaper found out about it. I have to give a public comment. I'd like you to be there to show your support for, you know, your lying, cheating husband. It will be good for our image.

And Steve, she is one smart cookie too! She has made the calculus as to what will be best for her own foray into politics. Not that I blame her, but political hacks and their cohorts live and breathe buy the opportunism of current media events. She will parlay this into a boost for her own political ends and that is just the way it is. It remains, however, the pol operatives (at all levels even some so low as to be irrelevant) that use these media "events" to line people up in groups (viz conservative, liberal, etc.) and weasel them to their own political advantage that are the most despicable! posted by

She's standing by her man long enough to assess his financial worth. Then she's going to ream him, I hope. God I feel sorry for her. I've been married for almost forty years. My husband always knew that I would walk out if he ever cheated on me. It wasn't a case of forgiving him. It was a case of not being able to forget. And THAT would have made both of us miserable. To my best knowledge, he never cheated. Besides, who would have made him biscuits and gravy like I do. (secret ingredient...cocaine) Cheating is a moot point now, of course. We're both too tired and stove up to bother looking at anyone else. Getting old has it's rewards. posted by

I honestly believe he is one of the many psychopaths we elect to run our over funded government. He doesn't seem genuinely remorseful. He is upset he got caught. His wife looks like hell this morning at his resignation. I do hope she rips him a big, new one. Audrey does he have to snort the gravy? posted by
