Jaz McKay's Obama post — hate speech or harmless humor?
We posted this story today. What do you think — is this a serious slur as the Obama folks contend or harmless humor? (Attached is a screen grab the Obama folks sent us). — Government editor Christine Bedell
Fake Obama slogans anger local supporters Local supporters of presidential hopeful Barack Obama are upset with radio personality Jaz McKay for posting what they say are inflammatory fake slogans about Obama’s campaign. The slogans, which appeared on McKay’s page of the KNZR 1560 AM Web site, included “Obama ‘08” followed by “Hope. Change. Dead honkeys.,” “kill white folks” and “Kill Whitey!” Obama pledge delegate Uduak Ntuk of Bakersfield said he was shocked and surprised by the slogans, which he called hate speech. “It’s actions like that that give Bakersfield a bad name,” Ntuk said. Station Vice President/General Manager Steve Darnell said that McKay did not create the slogans, he found them on another Web site and posted them to his own. McKay goes to a wide variety of news and humor sites on the Internet and posts numerous things he finds to his own site, Darnell said. The slogans were up for about a week, which is the normal amount of time McKay’s postings are online before replaced by something new. McKay will not be disciplined, Darnell said. “The listeners know what he’s about,” Darnell said. “They get his sarcasm and his tongue-in-cheek humor.” — Staff writer Jason Kotowski, jkotowski@bakersfield.com 52 comments from 29 users

It's slander. Obama's campaign has never advocated anything like that, whereas McKay and his ilk have repeatedly called for the death of Muslims, worldwide. McKay is the guy who got fired in Fresno--Fresno!--for urging the firebombing of ACLU offices in San Francisco, so perhaps it's not unexpected. posted by

I would really like to know what Ralph Bailey thinks of Jaz McKay's bumper stickers...and McKay's "I found 'em on the innertubes and thought I'd just post 'em here" falls right behind "I was only following orders" in terms of responsibility, in my book. posted by

not to be a sore thumb but whats wrong with him posting whatever he wants....if you hold McKay to this you should hold everyone including Nooneisabovethelaw and everyong else to the same standards. then what do you ban? what are the standards, we could probably agree on the above ban but what then? What about saying mccain is old? what about opinion? the point is what right or cliam does anyone have someone else just because they disagree. This is so like Obama supporter anyting that they dont like must be banned give me a break you dont like it then dont go to the site..................Im so tired of this crap. They didnt like Mcain stating the fact that a leader of Hamas the terrorist organization that beheads people they dont like, endorse and wants Obama to be Pres but I dont har them making a fuss about that. posted by

Who cares. If McKay found them online and posted them on his site, great. If not, great. Just here on the Californian blogs people say stuff, their own opinions, and sometimes lie. Who cares. First amendment protects free speech. If McKay offends you, then don't visit his site or listen to his show. It's not like you don't have control over whether or not you hear the voice of Jaz McKay. posted by

I'm sorry--I think it's funny. It's the irony. OF COURSE Obama doesn't really feel that way--that's why it's funny. If Obama really DID feel that way then it wouldn't be funny. It would be news. posted by

In a political campaign, for president of the United States, don't the involved parties feel a responsibility to make factual statements? I have not seen, anywhere, any statement by Obama or his campaign that would indicate anything close to the thought expressed in those phony bumperstickers. That, BS, is the standard that I would hold him to. And I'm fully aware I don't have to listen to his radio program or his station, thank goodness. What a wasteland of hot air. Also, BS, point out to me, exactly, where I said McKay's post should be banned? I didn't call for that, and I would't. I think McKay's choice of material speaks for itself. People will make up their own minds. CatherineBaker: our senses of humor are far apart. posted by

If Mr. Uduak Ntuk would do his candidate the distinction of rising to the occasion and actually disseminating on Barack Obama’s stance on actual issues instead of expecting to be elected into the highest office in the land only because he’s black and you’re not. As it is, playground taunts are the only thing we have to counter Obama because he doesn’t take a stand on anything.

I don't think I've ever seen a candidate who's supporters are so paranoid in their defense of him. Calling it slander to post humorous (and they are funny) bumper stickers goes with the suggestions that to even mention his middle name is somehow unfair and racist. The Obamaites fear that once you get past the soaring message of hope and unity, nothing is left but an empty and unappealing suit. posted by

Personally I think Jaz makes statements to stir it up and help his ratings. A lot of liberals listen in for a laugh before tuning the station over, and even more "Yeah, what he says" listeners who feel their narrow minded views are validated cuz they heard it on the radio. LOL posted by

Anyone with a bit of time wanna put together a "John McCain: I hate the gooks" bumpersticker? Actually, I do think the stickers on Jaz' site are kinda funny. The one I proposed isn't as funny since McCain actually said it. For those of you who don't know Obama's positions, check his website. http://www.barackobama.com/... posted by

Thinking about it, wouldn't McCain be his own ideal running mate? He exactly balances out his positions on torture, the economy, the Hundred Years War, the environment and so many other issues. . The only "downside" is that he comes from his own home state, so he'd have to forfeit Arizona's electoral votes, but maybe he could move into a hotel somewhere like Cheney did to get around that. . Just for the record, let's make it clear how this whole thing got started. It began with an e mail from a woman named Candi Easter. She wrote: "This is a link to the outrageous racist material on the Jaz McCay (sic) blog. I urge EVERY Democrat to call KNZR ... ask for the station manager and let them know what we think of this kind of garbage." It was then followed by an e mail from Bernita Jenkins that read, "I thought everyone needed to know the flavor of the day. I am really hoping many of you will call in on Monday and challenge McCay (sic)." Ask yourself, why didn't you hear about these e mails from the newspaper or TV media? Can a couple of people, a couple of liberal Democrats really MAKE a news story. Clearly, the answer is yes. And if local Democrats have a problem with the slogans why not attack the folks that created it? Why attack Jaz for sharing it with his audience? And what is "racist" about the slogans. It implies Obama will kill white people! Is it racist because someone believes Obama may commit murder? Or do they fear someone will believe Caucasian genocide is part of the party platform? C'mon!!!! Political correctness will be end of us. Everybody relax. Take your pants off and slide on the ice. That is unless you have a larger agenda. And by the way, a Priest, a Rabbi and a black guy never REALLY walked into a bar together. Ralph E. Bailey, Jr. posted by

JAZ I AM AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN AND I AM OFFENDED. I SAW ONE OF THE NAACP MEMBERS ON THE NEWS DISCUSSING THIS ISSUE THIS MORNING AND I WAS IN COMPLETE SHOCK. BEING FUNNY IS ONE THING BUT OUT RIGHT OFFENDING A PERSON BECAUSE OF THEIR RACE IS ANOTHER. THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT MIGHT SEE YOUR FAKE BUMPER STICKERS AND TRULY BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE TRUE. BLACKS AND WHITES HAVE ENOUGH REAL ISSUES; WE DON'T NEED YOU ADDING FUEL TO THE FIRE. OBAMA IS A GOOD MAN IN MY OPINION AND HE WOULD MAKE A FINE LEADER OF THIS COUNTRY. IF YOU DISLIKE HIM ATTACK HIM ON REAL ISSUES. HE HAS A WHITE MOTHER SO THE BUMPER STICKERS DO NOT EVEN PERTAIN TO HIM. I WILL NEVER LISTEN TO YOUR PROGRAM. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN LISTENING TO ANYONE THAT PROMOTES HATE. YOU ARE A BIGOT AND YOU NEED TO BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY. KNZR PLEASE DON'T STAND BEHIND A RACIST......IF HE IS NOT REPRIMANDED AT THE VERY LEAST I WILL HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE THAN TO BELIEVE YOU TOO PROMOTE HATE..!

Jaz is not a racist or a bigot. He has said several times that he doesn't discriminate against anyone. He is an equal opportunity offender, that's what he gets paid to do. He has the guts to say what is on his mind which obviously all of you have no problem doing yourselves. A lot of these comments are mean spirited and degrading to Mr. McKay ,so what makes your comments and actions OK but not his? Seems like a double standard to me. Ralph even jumped in and told you all to relax. He obviously wasn't offended. If you don't like his show then don't listen. Knowing what his ratings are and how well the show is doing he doesn't need you listening anyway. I am proud to say that both Mr. Bailey and Mr. McKay are friends of mine. I love both of their shows so I listen. If you don't agree, change the station...
