Does McCain need Cheney?

From politico.com:

He’s a highly effective fundraiser in an election cycle in which Republicans are starved for cash, a hero to the wing of the party that views John McCain with the most suspicion.

But despite his fundraising power and reputation, Vice President Dick Cheney is unlikely to share a stage with McCain anytime soon — and may not be called on to play any role at all in the 2008 presidential campaign.

Is McCain committing political suicide by not including Cheney in his battle plans, or is he better off keeping a safe distance from the vice president?

Does McCain need Cheney?

Absolutely not!

Embracing Cheney would at best be a clear sign of desperation for McCain,

The reason why McCain is having difficulty raising big bucks is because potential donors know they would be throwing their money away on a lost cause.

Cheney might be the least liked person in the country, especially after he arrogantly retorted "so what" when told by a newscaster that polls indicated more than 70 percent of the country were against the war and believed he and the Bush administration were poor leaders.

Being connected to Bush and his low popularity with two thirds of the voting public is bad enough for McCain, but Cheney is even more personally despised by legions of voters and being connected to him amounts to the political kiss of death.

Any money Cheney might help to raise for McCain's campaign won't buy enough votes for McCain to offset the losses.

I think McCain could really use some help from Cheney, the more they can be seen together in public the better.  It was a real mistake not picking Cheney to head up the vp search committee.

I'm sure he's got a *REALLY* good candidate he could suggest.

.

Actually, associating Cheney with McCain instead of Bush could be a real plus.

Like the story of the lion following the elephant herd in search of droppings--he'd just eaten a Republican politican and wanted to get the taste out of his mouth...
