politicsanyone - > Politics, anyone? -> Obama might 'refine' Iraq timeline
Obama might 'refine' Iraq timeline

Obama said today he's consider refining his Iraq timeline after he visits Iraq and talks to commanders over there.

(read the New York Times piece here)

Much of Obama's popularity was built on his stance against the Iraq war and his timetable for withdrawal.

I imagine his detractors will be shouting "flip-flopper" from the rooftops, while his supporters will say this is just more evidence of his willingness to listen to the experts and work with others for the best solution.

Either way, there's bound to be some discussion.

Why not start here!

How is this any different from what he said on February 27, 2008?

SEN. OBAMA: Well, if the Iraqi government says that we shouldn't be there, then we cannot be there. This is a sovereign government, as George Bush continually reminds us.

Now, I think that we can be in a partnership with Iraq to ensure the stability and the safety of the region, to ensure the safety of Iraqis and to meet our national security interests.

But in order to do that, we have to send a clear signal to the Iraqi government that we are not going to be there permanently, which is why I have said that as soon as I take office, I will call in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we will initiate a phased withdrawal, we will be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in. We will give ample time for them to stand up, to negotiate the kinds of agreements that will arrive at the political accommodations that are needed. We will provide them continued support. But it is important for us not to be held hostage by the Iraqi government in a policy that has not made us more safe, that's distracting us from Afghanistan, and is costing us dearly, not only and most importantly in the lost lives of our troops, but also the amount of money that we are spending that is unsustainable and will prevent us from engaging in the kinds of investments in America that will make us more competitive and more safe.

More spin from the "Liberal" media.

Do you realize what will become of our country if Obama does become President?  We will have much higher taxes, give health insurance to EVERYONE including the illegals.  We are slowly becoming a socialized country, and I don't think people really realize what that will mean.  As for Iraq, we must do things in a way that is best for both them and us.  If we were to pull out, where do you think the fighting will come?  I sure don't want them here.  THINK ABOUT IT!!

Gee..that announcement comes as a big surprise.  I'm shocked.  Shocked I tell ya.........

I'm guessing you haven't looked at Obama's tax proposals. Most people will actually pay less taxes, unless you are in the top 1%, then you have some catching up to do. I also find it funny that you say we're slowly becoming a socialized country. Do you realize that any government run program or service falls under that category. I'm sure you don't have a problem with your tax money going to fund Police, fire and roads.

Before you go making things up about Obama and what he wants to accomplish, perhaps you should read more about his proposals. You might actually agree with some of them. If you get your information about him from KNZR, well, good luck with that.

During the debates, in January 2008, John Edwards, pledged to have all combat troops out of Iraq, all combat mission ended,  and  no permanent military bases in Iraq during his first year as president, and asked if Obama, and HRC would make such a pledge, Obama responded first, by saying, "What I've said, and I've said repeatedly is that I want to be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in, but I want to make sure that we get all of our combat troops out as quickly as we can safely and the estimates are maybe 2 brigades a month..." Obama continued in his statement, but I can't type as fast as he talks, so you'd have to watch the video to see the whole conversation, one place you can do that is this CNN video (CNN sponsored this debate)  Video Watch video ».     So, how is that any different from what Obama said today, ...but Obama added that he would be open to “refine my policies” about a timeline for withdrawing troops after meeting with American military commanders during a trip to Iraq later this month. It seems to me as a member of an editorial staff, who influence voters opinions, you might feel some responsibility to accurately represent the facts.  If I can Goggle this, and view the actual statements of Mr. Obama and write about it, in less then 20 minutes, you should do the same.

I see on your profile that "This blog will be devoted to bringing you the inside stories as those issues work themselves out in local, state and federal politics in the coming election year and beyond, with contributions from all Californian reporters.

The guy's not going to pull a Reagan, after all.  He's *ALWAYS* talked about a phased withdrawal probably taking about 16 months.  "Refining the timeline" might even mean bringing them home sooner than that.

If we were to pull out, where do you think the fighting will come?

Oh, I imagine very few of those fighting will choose to swim over here.  They'll have plenty of targets in Iraq to keep them happy.

Hey, Obama actually knows the difference between Shia and Suni Muslims. McCain has already proven he doesn't know what the differences are.

How many bloggers here know the difference?

No you don't have to post what the differences are. I'll take your word for it.

Before you go making things up about Obama and what he wants to accomplish, perhaps you should read more about his proposals.

I'm willing to bet that if he read the proposals without knowing who put them forward, he would agree with most of them.

Surveys have found that Americans lean to the left when presented with a list of issues without being told which side they come from.

After all, Bush has been "getting us out of Iraq" since 2006.

The issue of who wrote the story, was a passing comment, my post was about the lack of responible journalism.

While on the issue of responsible journalism, how is it that the rescue of 15 hostages, including 3 U.S. defense contractors in a daring rescue in Columbia, some of which had been held for as long as 6 years, is only worthy of page A11, and a story about firework fizzle is your above the fold front page story?  Just curious.

Yeah, Nancy--surprise surprise.

Something tells me his "timetable" will get longer and longer...and longer, too.

Is there any issue that this guy has taken a firm stand on one side or the other?  Was he for or against the Heller 2nd amendment decision?
