Got questions for McCain?

So presdiential hopeful John McCain is coming to Bakersfield Monday.

We don't know too much yet about his itinerary yet but we do know he'll be at a fundraiser. Posted here is a photo from when McCain came here in 2000.

If you got a chance to talk to McCain, what would you ask him?

"At what point in your presidency would you admit you're wrong about a continued presence in Iraq, and begin the process of removing the troops?"

Are you healthy and can you provide reports to verify it ? Cancer ridden 70 yr olds are not a good choice for such a demanding job.

"You stated that Iraq was the first major conflict after 9/11. Why do you not consider Afghanistan to be a major conflict?"

"You cancelled a speech on an oil derrick to highlight off-shore drilling, blaming the weather. The weather was predicted to be 80 degrees and sunny, with the hurricane your staff cited being 600 miles away. Did the 400,000 barrels of oil spilled in the Mississippi River play a part in the cancelling of the speech?"

"You implied Barack Obama was wrong to give a speech in Berlin before becoming president, saying you would have not done so on foreign soil. If that is the case, can you explain why you gave a speech in Columbia three weeks ago and in Canada last month?"

"You have stated on several occasions that you are a foreign policy expert. If that is the case, why do you seem to make so many mistakes on that front? Somalia for Sudan, Czechoslovakia that no longer exists, al-Qaeda training in Iran, Sunni and Shiites, surge levels in Iraq, etc."

And the all-important:

"Can you name a single economic policy on which you differ from George W. Bush?"

How do you feel about 900 out of 1500 seats being empty at your last townhall meeting ?

No you all are Obamadrons....absolutely no brains, just drool at the sound of Flip Flop no matter that he has changed his position on just about every important issue before him.

Then you call McCain and Bush names because you have the intelligence of a five years old.

You have no manners and should be spanked by you momma and taught some manners.

Why can't you have a debate without all of the name calling and stupid innuendos.  (because you know you can't because of Flip Flops current positions)

MCCAIN = 2008

Anyone else see the irony in Neocon's line "Why can't you have a debate without all of the name calling" after the first two paragraphs of his post?

"You've stated that 'victory' is not only possible in Iraq, but that your Presidency would achieve it by 2013. How do you 'win' an occupation, and what would it look like?"

I'd be willing to pay $1k, if I got to ask that question, and watch him try to answer it in person.

How many illegal aliens do you think will vote for you because of your amnesty bill?  And how many black votes do you think you gained endorsing Hussein Obama at the NAACP get together the other day?  Oh, and one last question.  When will you quit mooning conservatives?

I'd ask if McCain still thinks it was a good idea to co-sponser the DREAM Act, granting citizenship to children of illegal immigrants who graduate from high school.

Actually, I'd want to pull up a list of legislation that McCain wrote or co-sponsered and then voted against and ask how many of his own laws he is against?

Either that, or I'd ask him to take a final position on Roe v. Wade...

Or just ask him why he hasn't cast a single vote since--what was it...May?  April?

RF, I'm pretty sure that as a territory, Arizona's Senate seat is non-voting anyway...

[edit]: Sorry, my people are telling me that Arizona is now a state.

But it wasn't a state when McBush originally took office, so maybe he's just confused about what year it is?

I'll just say one word, RF: Czechoslovakia.

I'll just say one word, RF: Czechoslovakia.

Hey, I already asked him about that.

Come up with your own questions.  ;)

I would present this question to McCain:  What do you make of the constant barage of criticism thrown your way being every bit as merciless as the criticism directed at Bush, given that your record appears to reflect a much more moderate position on so many key issues?

posted by nooneisabovethelaw on Jul 25, 2008 at 02:13 PM

Harumph. McCain's position? I guess the key term there, BLT, is "appears"...the facts don't seem to bear that out.

In 2007, CQ {Congressional Quarterly] found that McCain voted with his party 90 percent of the time. Also, McCain voted in support of President Bush’s position on legislation 95 percent of the time, the top presidential-support score in the Senate. (It should be noted, however, that McCain participated in only 48 percent of what CQ called party unity votes and only 39 percent of votes on which the president took a position, since the senator had been out on the campaign trail much of last year.)

In 2006, McCain’s party unity score was 76 percent (and he was present for 94 percent of such votes). That year, McCain’s fairly low score ranked him sixth on the list of Senate Republicans who most opposed their party. In 2005, his party unity score was higher – 84 percent – though he was ninth on the list of those who voted in opposition of the party.

It's a matter of opinion whether such ratings show that he's not that conservative or that he merely goes his own way more than others who follow the party. The scores do show that he has backed his party the vast majority of the time. Other groups also have found McCain to be firmly in the Republican camp. The American Conservative Union has been rating members of Congress on just how conservative they are since 1971. It gives McCain an 82.3 rating, on a scale of 0 to 100, for the life of his congressional career. That measure, too, is based on an analysis of votes on certain issues. And GovTrack.us, a site that tracks legislation, labels McCain a "rank-and-file Republican" based on a statistical analysis of the bills he sponsored in relation to bills sponsored by his colleagues in the 109th and 110th Congress (that’s 2005 through 2008).

Doc, what issues does he differ from Bush on?  I haven't checked McCain's positions this week, but I think he used to oppose many of Bush's positions and now supports them or opposes them depending on who he's talking to.

He was pro-choice and in favor of stem cell research and then changed his mind.

He opposed the Bush tax hikes until he was for them.

He said he opposed the handling of the war but never really brought that up until he agreed with it.

He said privatizing Social Security was a bad idea but has been pushing for it lately.

posted by Shwaine on Jul 25, 2008 at 03:25 PM

He's almost always voted pro-life according to an article I read yesterday. He's also got a bad voting history on other women's rights issues like contraceptives and equal pay. Of course, the last reporter that asked him about such things just got "I'll have to get back to you".

posted by randomfactor on Jul 25, 2008 at 03:32 PM

He hadn't been given his new position yet.

posted by blognroll on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:35 AM

I don't need to bring up his voting record.  Sure he's pro-life, that's abundantly clear (and more power to him for that).  But let's be honest.  There's a reason so many Republicans were adamant about not letting him in.  Look at his record.  Look at who he's teamed up with in the past and what bills they tried to get passed.

Liberals, let's be intellectually honest.  Are you telling me that if you were forced to choose between Bush and McCain, you would have no preference either way?

posted by randomfactor on Jul 28, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Personally, BLT, I'd choose Bush.  Since he's Constitutionally not able to screw the country over for four more years the way McCain could.

If it's not too late to suggest another question:

"Was the growth removed from your face yesterday a recurrence of the melanoma?"

posted by nooneisabovethelaw on Jul 28, 2008 at 01:45 PM

A choice between Bush and McCain? Sounds like a choice between being shot or hanged.

posted by randomfactor on Jul 28, 2008 at 01:52 PM

Choose "shot."  Folks recover from that.

posted by randomfactor on Jul 28, 2008 at 02:53 PM

Well, to his credit, McCain didn't vote in lockstep with his fellow Republican senators today when they voted *FOR* child pornography.

Of course, that's just because he didn't bother to show up, being in Bakersfield.  He hasn't shown up for work since May.
