Radio host Scott Cox suspended for sign stealing
KERN suspended Scott Cox, its irreverant morning talk show host, indefinitely Wednesday evening after he admitted "kidnapping" campaign signs belonging to high school Trustee Chad Vegas. Cox said the whole thing was a prank that went bad once The Californian started following tips about the thievery. Here's the story. What do you think? Does the punishment fit the crime?

Scott Cox should be fired. Not because he stole the signs. He should be fired because he is not a very good radio host. He has a huge ego, which I can understand that he may need that to do his job, I just find him opressive. The few times I tried to listen to him he seemed more interested in hearing himself talk that speaking intelligently on the subject matter. He should have been let go long ago. I have a hard time believing that the sign stealing was some sort of prank. Moreover, admitting that he had stolen signs from other candidates in previous campaigns in no way casts a better light on this situation. I don't personally care for Chad Vegas, but that is another issue. Still, stealing his signs was wrong, whatever the reason. In his television interview he made a statement about his intent to give Chad Vegas a hard time anytime he could. To me that just enforces that this was more than just a harmless prank. There is a difference between good humor and malicious activities. This was clearly a malicious act.

WOW! Bakersfield police actually solved a crime. The Great Sign Caper--too bad it wasn't something important that they solved. Our tax dollars hard at work; not like we have unsolved murders or any other unsolved crimes in Kern County they could be working ON.

I don't listen to Scott Cox. But I do listen to Chad Vegas, and Chad Vegas is a poison to our community and to the rights of our people. If Chad Vegas had his way, he would force all of us to convert to his perverted idea of Christianity. Make no mistake about it--he would do it if he could. He can deny it all he wants, but he wants to convert this city, this county, this state, and this country to an extreme version of Christianity. This extreme version of Christianity includes silencing, and perhaps killing, the infidels, the atheists, the agnostics, and anyone else with whom he disagrees. One need not look further than his statements: "I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States as well as the Constitution of the state of California, but I did not raise my hand when I put my hand on the Bible and raise my other hand, I did not raise my hand and say that in doing so I would violate the law of God. I did not say that I would do that, and nor will I violate the law of God. It is a superior law."
Vegas went on to tell an unrelated story about Dread Scott and how he would not have supported it. But since we are students of history and can see through the inconsistencies of Chad's judicial philosophy, let us rightly conclude this: Racism was bad then, as it is now. Therefore, Chad would have opposed Dread Scott. Homophobia was bad then, as it is now. Therefore, Chad ought to support same-sex marriage. After all, why would it be appropriate to suppress and subjugate one minority group when another minority group seeks the same rights as everyone else, except in this instance, the issue is not race, but sexual preference. But wait...he doesn't! Racism and homophobia are not necessarily relatted to one another. Racism is the fear of someone with a different skin color, whereas homophobia is essentially the fear of someone wanting to sodomize you without solicitation. So how does this fare in Chad's world? For him, we are born with certain genetic characteristics that are beyond our control, one of them being the amount of melatonin we have. Yet he neglects the other biological fact that some people are born gay. Yes, it's true. You know that kid in elementary school who everyone thought was gay because he acted so gayly? Years later, it turns out that he is, in fact, gay. Big deal. Clay Aiken just came out of the closet, and was anyone surprised? No. So Chad Vegas says that all gay stuff is wrong because it goes against God's law. After all, he did not swear that he would go against God's law. Let's put this into some perspective. Let's say that I am elected into office. I swear upon a Bible (and you could substitute a phone book for the Bible--it wouldn't mean anything to me) to uphold the Constitution. As one of my constituents, you would expect me to, first and foremost, uphold the Constitution. After all, that's what I said I would do. But let's say that I didn't swear that I would go against the rules of my bookie--my bookie said that I couldn't do X or Y, and since I didn't swear that I would go against my bookie, I have no obligations to uphold the other oath upon which I swore (that being the oath of the Constitution). My constituents would kick me out immediately--perhaps even violently. And that's what Chad Vegas has done. He has been sworn to office to do one thing, but his loyalty is to something else. We cannot have this in our government. Chad Vegas needs to be removed from office immediately. While I do not advocate theft, Scott Cox has done everyone a favor by ridding this community of Chad Vegas.

Forgiveness is a wonderful thing to be given when an offender apologizes for their sins and wrongdoing. We would all do well to remember that, and especially the leaders of our community. Mr. Cox and Rev. Vegas have often offended others, Scott more often on purpose, to be the "shock jock" guy he tries to be on air, than Chad, who is quite the "prophet" of what he views as Biblical truth, extended into the public/secular realm. As far as I can tell, Scott has thoroughly apologized for his stupid stunt, which is much more than most of our unapologetic elected and influential leaders have done for their many past offenses. Even if one feels they are absolutely right when they speak and/or act, there will always be those who are offended. That's life. However, our community and society will continue to be irreparably fractured until the offenders and offendees learn to humbly agree to disagree and are genuinely apologetic and forgiving without condescension and efforts to rule and control. I hope that Chad Vegas as a minister of the gospel will be quick to humble his pride and to forgive Scott Cox.

Scott broke the law. He tied up city services with his law-breaking. He has shown great disdain for Chad Vegas for years. So when calls it a "hoax gone bad" he is lying. The signs were stolen. How a theft be a hoax? He really did steal them. His line of "I was going to give them back" is just plain bull. Cox is a pompous jerk who deserves to get either canned or suspended without pay for a long period of time. I think there is some irony here that Scott always loves to talk about stupid people and scammers when he has just shown he is among their ranks. And don't get me started on the cronyism. posted by

Everytime I have passed by one of Chad Vegas' signs I have either thought about or said out loud, "if it weren't for the fact that I'd probably get arrested, I'd like to spray paint LIAR and HYPOCRITE across those signs." It will be a very sad thing if he gets re-elected. I am sick of his personal agenda. I truly don't believe he has our children's best interest at heart. posted by

Nancy,
They werent dumped per se, time slots just shifted. Giving scott an extra hour on the radio, and inga and extra hour. The reason is clearly for advertising dollars, since those two are there highest rated radio shows. Scott's show has excellent ratings for a local show, which is what makes him a big draw for advertisers. Also, he was rated bakersfields best radio show a few times. I listen to him because listening to inga is impossible. She preaches on the radio while scott is much more humerous and clearly doesnt have an 'agenda' he promotes. LIstening to scott is great because its not always about politics and the same crap that keeps going on and that everyone else is talking about. It is definetly entertaining. Im going to start the FREE SCOTT COX campaign. posted by

I agree with Ed1936. There is some bigger fish to fry that is done by thugs, that nothing is ever happening to them. Unlike these other creeps, Scott has done many honorable things in the community. Look at all the graffiti that is constantly damaging property, and nothing is ever being done about that (as well as all the much bigger things too). Scott's prank was probably going to be just a funny prank, but it was cut short. (On April 5 a group home client took the group home van on a joy ride and plowed it through my landscaping and crashed it in the bedroom next door to my house, just missing my house. The group home owners should have been at my front door immediately to fix and clean things up, but have done nothing. I have had to research things out big time how to contact them. They have avoided returning calls to me, and when I have talked to them got nowhere. The house next to me still has a giant hole with just plywood in place. It is devaluing my house from the blight I am sure.) posted by

Anselmo..I said they were dumped from that time slot. Scott is more popular but only with certain listeners, I just don't happen to be one who appreciates his over the top style. It really doesn't matter to me who is on in the morning now since I no longer commute a half hour to work every day. I used to enjoy Danielle and Bill during that commute and wasn't haappy when they took them off my drive time. Well, I have to qualify that, I never really cared for her, she's to stiff and doesn't have a smooth delivery. Bottom line is it doesn't matter who he is or why he did it....it was a really dumb thing to do and he needs at the very least, a fine and community service. He does a lot for the community anyway so it wouldn't be too much to expect. posted by

What difference does it make who it was that caused this issue. Should Scott Cox be any different than any one of us. If you or I would have been caputured we would be charged and not get a free pass. It also does not matter that the prank/crime was committed against Chad Vegas or any other person running for office. It was wrong. Let's let the system run its course. Any one of his advertisers would not be happy if someone blocked their adverstisements for a number of days. For those that say it does not make a difference, that people who are going to vote for the candidate are not going to rely on a sign let me offer this... If this were to happen to any number of events that occur around town (Brews in the Village, Festival of Trees, Chez Noel, etc...) and their signs were taken as a prank it would not be dismissed so quickly. I dare say that those who are going to attend these events are going to regardless of any sign being in place. Saying that "it's just Scott Cox" is no excuse.Yes, he has done so much for this community but that does not give him license to do something that is against the law. He should think about staying in the position he is in so that he can continue to do great and charitable things. That means understanding that actions come with consequences. posted by

No, forgiveness doesn't always mean no consequences, but it goes a long way in helping to bring reconciliation and some peace. The Bible says, "God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows that shall he also reap." Good seed sown returns a good harvest. On the other side, bad seed sown brings a bad harvest. Scott has done the right thing to apologize. But he's already paying/harvesting the price for his dumb stunt, in public opinion and loss of wages/work. Chad needs to meet with Scott, I think privately is best, to clear the air and not let the media and politics overplay this any more than they have. It's always better to keep short accounts when offended. And Chad knows what the Bible says to do about "enemies," "repentance," and "forgiveness." With Scott Cox, you always need to consider the source, but this time he crossed the line between outrageous and "outlawful." posted by

OK, on topic: It's illegal to steal campaign signs. If I stole Vegas's signs, you KNOW there'd be an uproar. Cox should be arrested and pay the required penalty, whatever it is for multiple counts of that offense. Not because I dislike Cox, but because the electoral process cannot tolerate a "porank" of this type. Vegas legally placed the signs, and no one should remove them but him. Now, off topic: Isn't it interesting that Chad said he couldn't attend the KHSD Board of Trustees Canddiate forum at Temple Beth El Tuesday night, ostensibly because he was "on a week's vacation with his family," but he was in town enough on Wednesday to comment on his stolen signs. Hysterical!!! It was my understanding (and this could just be a bad source) that Cox never owned that Hummer, it was simply a "donor" car from a sponsor. The law was broken. Taking something without the owner's permission is theft. Plain and simple. The total value determines whether or not it is a felony. Involving a minor makes the crime more grievous. Making excuses after the fact is a tactic used by practically all criminals. Should Cox be allowed to "walk" from this will only prove what many Americans already suspect, there is a double standard in our country's legal system. Don Imus was fired for his indiscretion, why not Cox. If disciplinary is not taken by KERN management, I will definitely tune out that radio station and let the advertisers know about. posted by
