Should we split California?
Bill Maze, who perhaps-coincidentially might run for Roy Ashburn's state senate seat, is promoting the idea of getting rid of those pesky liberal coastal counties. He's even got a Web site, in which he explains that he'd cut the state approximately in half by population. What do you think? How would we do if we shed the Los-Angeles-to-San-Francisco corridor? 27 comments from 13 users

Since we get far more tax dollars in this region than we pay in, I'm sure Western California would love to dump us, in a heartbeat. It would gut the central valley as we know it. This would be Appalachia West, or something worse. Dumb idea, Maze. Unfortunately he's got supporters. There's also that little matter of Congress not wanting to have any more seats...you could split the House reps, but there's no way they're going to let in two more Senators. Not gonna happen. And just think of the problems redesigning the flag...3 rows of 17 stars? posted by

The flag issue is the one that worries me... This is a silly idea that is raised now again with different configurations. Never seems to come up when the state is doing well, then we are happy campers. Bad idea. I believe it was RF who first brought this group to our attention.

How would we do if we shed the Los-Angeles-to-San-Francisco corridor? LA-to-SF would do much better without the excess weight... As I stated earlier, their claimed reasons for the split don't hold water, politically. posted by

Oh horsefeathers. If they ever do split it they should split across...smack dab. Each would get a major city and agriculture, the north would get the most wine so that should make them happy. The distance to Disneyland would be the same. Access to NV gambling would remain for both ends. Both would have their own beaches. Hey.. then when I go to SF I could say I was going out of state. Make me sound more well traveled. Win win.. posted by

That's a GREAT question...let's ask the party of " NO " ...and who is the bone-head that thought this one up--not the poster--but it's got to be some politican with too much time on his or her's hands posted by

I'm sorry, but all that effort and energy spent on a project that has no hope in ever being accomplished, and that most sane people recognize as stupid, brings up a question. How did this guy become an Assemblyman in California? You have to wonder why an elected official does not spend some energy working on solutions between the private and public sector on jobs, education and health care. Bill Maze please leave the stage. posted by

Split at the Tehachapis, Northern Cal/Oregon/Washington to become their own country. Then you'd have something. posted by

Fortunately I never seem to get forwards like that. Either I'm not a person in their eyes (possible) or my protective candleburning rituals are extra good (very possible). ;) posted by

my protective candleburning rituals are extra good (very possible). ;) Gonna need details on that. Mine don't seem to be working right. :) . If we get "Imagine" and they get the "Star-Mangled Spanner," I can live with that. I can *SING* "Imagine." posted by

What worked for me was the simple truth: I have only five friends I email and would like to keep them. Please stop forwarding these to me or be responsible for my (pick one) imminent death, lack of luck, money or angel sightings, etc.

I wish this particular person would take me off of the "mass" forward list. I don't think he knows how. I may have to resort to the candles and the faith. posted by

This just goes to show folks what a crackpot Bill Maze really is. This idea would create more problems than it would solve, if in fact it would solve any. What is he thinking? Really? How did this guy get elected? Reminds me of another crackpot, Roy Asburn who claimed a couple of years ago that he talked to God and God told him how to vote. I believe in prayer, but I don't believe that God tells us what to do in such mundane crap. And why is it that some people get a different answer that is 180 degrees from others? Hey God should I post this or not?

If you looked at the last election all the counties on the coast and up north were blue and the counties that were inside of California were red. I think this would be much better than giving every electoral vote to who ever the Demcratic candidate is.
