What do you think of our stimulus projects?

The enormity of February's federal stimulus bill is evident when you consider Kern County has already been awarded more than $200 million in projects, as we reported Sunday.

Take a look at what we've gotten so far and let us know what you think. We've already gotten some questions about the list and will try to answer them — send us yours, too.

Update: We were asked why stimulus money isn't being used to repair the Isabella Dam.

The Army Corps of Engineers just said that's because there's already plenty of money budgeted for the project.

The current fiscal year budget (for the year that ends this coming Sept. 30) had $8 million for the dam and the project is tentatively scheduled to get another $8 million in the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.

It's the big government contracts which keep many of these businesses afloat, so I don't understand what McCarthy wants..

Each one of those dollar signs have at least one business behind them, who knows how many people and possible new jobs. Sounds like the California stimulus money watcher takes her job seriously.

Does the stimulus money cover repaving roads like Stockdale and Ming? Both those roads are getting pot-hole riddled in certain areas. There's other roads similarly in need in repaving around town. I had thought such projects were included in the stimulus package but I don't see any mention of road repaving in the Bakersfield list. It's sad when you have to worry about the road killing your car's alignment and/or suspension.

There are very few roads here (sw in perticular) that are completely free of potholes and or long stretches of cracked pavement. Especially the east/west roads.

Hysterically funny too read Rep. McCarthy's response to the money allocated locally. It reads like -I object and have no plan of my own, but will gratefully accept all your dollars.-

Can someone please explain to me how the millions of dollars of taxpayer-funded federal stimulus money that is being allocated to various Kern County apartment projects benefits the taxpayers?  Is this for subsidized housing (Section 8) or something else?  By my count, about $40 million of apartment projects is being funded in Kern, and I expect there are similar projects securing stimulus funding across the nation.  What gives?

Horatio:  Tom Coburn (R-OK) has a listing on his official U.S. Senate Web site of many of the stimulus projects.  Stunning.  You should look it up.  As I said, stunning.  Many of our roads here in the midwest have gone to pot, too.  I have seen a few trucks around filling the potholes, but what's needed is new blacktop or pavement altogether.  And according to Coburn, bridges like that one in Minneapolis that collapsed exist all over the U.S.  Where is the stimulus money?  Where?  Where are all those shovel-ready projects?  The only shovel-ready project I know about for sure is my house.  (Just kidding.)

Here's another site tasked with keeping an eye on stimulus spending.  Check out the "Least Critical" tab.....very disheartening!  Although I can't find any projects on this list in Kern......
