Protect Marriage: Ban Divorce
A Sacramento man has qualified a...unique...ballot measure to collect signatures for the 2010 ballot. The 2010 Marriage Protection Act would protect marriage — by outlawing divorce in California. Secretary of State Debra Bowen just certified it today. John Marcotte needs the signatures of 694,354 voters to get the measure on the ballot. He's got a slick website that adopted the blue and yellow theme colors from the sucessful Yes on 8 campaign of Nov. 2008. But, as the Huffington Post notes and a video for the measure sarcastically states, Marcotte isn't really prompting the abolishment of divorce. It's his opinion that divorce is a bigger threat to marriage than gay marriage. - James Burger, Californian staff writer 20 comments from 13 users

I have a better idea, ban marriage. I for one would certainly be a lot wealthier. There would also be that side benefit of no more debate on prop 8. Probably cut down on domestic violence too. posted by

The radical right is at it again! 'Until death do us part'. Well, the next time he beats the tar out of her, that might be the case! And the part about 'Jesus loves you; just not as much' is absolute garbage and cannot be substantiated by scripture. And even scripture ALLOWS (that's right-ALLOWS) divorce in cases of marital infidelity. RESPECTABLE child psychology will suggest that a child is BETTER OFF if the parents divorce than if the parents stay together with the children witnessing such dysfunction. posted by

And, we can't limit this proposition to state sanctioned marriages. We must also make it illegal for couples living together without the benefit of marriage to separate and end their illicit relationships. Those who are shacking up cause just as much harm to society when they go their separate ways as do those married couples who divorce and those domestic partners who split the sheets. Once you mate with another, you must be welded together with that person until death breaks that weld. posted by

Or until her ARM breaks midterm? What of domestic violence? This is pure evil disguised as morality. And STAYING in toxic relationships costs society more than GETTING OUT. These people are out of their mind. These people TWIST scripture to support their biggoted, cheuvanistic agenda. posted by

Sorry Midterm but domestic partners are not in a holy binding relationship like marriage. So no something like this should not be made legal for domestic partners or just couple that are not married, unless you wanted to make marriage legal for everyone? But I think with all the talk of gays destroying the satiny of marriage. This new bill is a step it the right direction for straight couples, a life time with God's love I can see Yes on Prop 8 commercials now with there cheesy family having a picnic, and in the back ground they are saying "in schools they want to say that marriage can end whenever, but with Prop # families will stay together and that will be taught in school that family stay together forever, and that will be good for kids., and God will not destroy America. posted by

Let's take a step backward and "get back to God." I don't want to live by someone else's religious beliefs. posted by

Religion, sexual orientation, legality....none of the fore mentioned has anything to do with how long a marriage will last. Marriages that last are made up of two people who are totally committed to that union. And if they are not committed to it, nothing will keep it together. posted by

You realize this is a joke. It is hilarious if you look at the website. "John plus four and Kate plus four ='s sin" I can't stop laughing at this. I will be there in Sacramento on 11/14. posted by

Now I see why the jackasses like the regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein, are so hung up on marriage. "There will be an assault on the institution of marriage. Why? Because the left knows that they can't really have government come in and take control of everything unless they destroy the family. Unless you destroy the family and destroy the Church they cannot ultimately be successful in getting socialism to be accepted in this country and that's what their objective is." --Former U.S. Sen. and potential presidential candidate Rick Santorum at the 17th International Week of Prayer and Fasting: http://www.lifesitenews.com... Stuff like Marcotte's prank is why I don't vote clowns into office.

No one is trying to destroy marriage, other then when spouses cheat on one another, or lie to another that the real danger to family not Obama or Gays stop using them as a scape-goat for Americas failed marriages. Also in a perfect world marriage would have no connection to government you would not be granted any rights by getting married. You would go file with the government as partners to get your federal rights. Keep God out of government and government out of the church. Because this all has to do with religion not family. posted by

Jay, there already is a separation of church and state when it comes to marriage. There are weddings performed in the churches and there are civil marriage ceremonies for those who don't want to have anything to do with a church. The government just recognizes marriages performed in the church for legal purposes -- ditto for those quickie drive-through weddings performed in Las Vegas. What it comes down to is that the vast majority of Americans want marriage limited to one man and one woman -- and for good reason. posted by

You don't understand what I'm saying if you want to get married go to a church, if marriage is a legal bond between a man a women and God. When you have the government giving out marriage licenses to go get married in a church then i don't see it very separate. I think the government should just do domestic partnerships for everyone and if you want to get married in the eyes of God go do it in Church. Not fair when certain people have to get screwed in taxes because they are Gay. Also what is your reason for why same sex partners can't be together other then religion should they just be alone for the rest of there lives, shoot them selves, or pretend to be straight and date your daughter?

Patrick319 seemed to miss the memo. He is commenting about what a horrible law this would be without seeming to understand it was designed to mock the Yes on 8 crowd. Again, pretty indicative of the liberal mentality. I am actually a conservative who believes in the freedom loving principles at the very basis of our ideology. I don't feel I have a right to infringe on your right to marry who you please. I also feel you have a right to a divorce. Of course I don't agree with either of those actions, but that is your choice not mine. I certainly wouldn't seriously advocate banning divorce to teach people a lesson either. So I wouldn't say this law should be put in place. Then again I try to remain consistent, which liberals have a hard time doing with their wishy washy ways. I agee with the poster above who believes we should ban marriage and have civil unions. If you want to get married, go to church. We don't need to involve the government in it.
