KC Vector Control plane is flying over my house spraying
As I sit here I have heard that plane fly overhead a minimum of four times, spraying that 'harmless' chemical to kill mosquitoes. I did not take precautions against this chemical as we were supposed to be about 3 miles from the target area, with no wind drift.. This chemical is not harmless as the Californian article, and the radio new stations have said (by the way, I was a PCA at a nursery, and have used pesticides with pyrethrin).

The article in The Californian has these quotes...

"Jonah said pyrethrin is not a health threat to people and is approved by the EPA."

and

"The chemical, if used properly, should not be a concern to property, pets, wildlife and the environment, according to a news release from the county health department."

Here is the specimen label for the product being used:

http://www.automist.com/pdf...

Note the Environmental Hazards note at the bottom left of the label.

How many koi ponds have been sprayed, including mine? If my koi are floating dead because they suffocated from the oil that coated my pond, the Vector District will be getting a bill for $3000. from me. I have valuable koi, and I will not absorb the loss. The liability falls on the Vector District for not issuing a warning to pond owners.

I hope that all the ponds in Bakersfield escaped this assault!

In a somewhat fortuitous turn of events I went outside for my nightly bike ride wondering if id see them spray and/or if id get sprayed. Within seconds of walking out the door a plane came buzzing overhead like it was making strafing runs on ze germans. I stood there waiting for a mist to hit me and didnt see or feel anything at all. My skin hasnt melted off  yet so I guess im alright.

My fish are on a covered porch at the edge.  Guess I'd better go out and see it they survived.  The water is murkey so I have to wait til they come to the surface when I feed them.   I don't like fish but I've had these guys for years..they'd better be ok.

Speaking of.  My old pond was clear but this one is murkey.  What would cause that?  Too much sun?

We were given enough time to prepare.. It was in the newspaper and on tv. Everyone should have been prepared. In or out of the area to be sprayed. Weather is unpredictable.

How are your fish today? Did they make it?

This is the same stuff that you use on your kids heads to get rid of lice.  If people will put it on their children, I don't see why everybody's suddenly so worried about having it sprayed in an amount less than one ounce per acre.  Just about anything can be toxic in large enough amounts, and if used improperly....even water.

I have dogs and a child.. I still have them all in perfect health. What are people worried about?

I think its bogus that so many people threaten to sue over something that the people in charge thought if it would be dangerous or not. Everyone is so sue happy.. get over it.

There was no problems with the fish, and the 4am partial water change did not hurt either.. They are in a 1300 gallon pond, with excellent filtration and a shade structure overhead. Water quality is of the utmost importance, and the filtration system I have did the job.

Had this application been oil based instead of water based, it would likely have been a different result.

YGH, If you had something of value, and the destruction of it was caused by the actions of a governmental agency, would you 'get over it'? By the way, I have never sued, and did not imply that I would have. Only hold the party responsible for the cost of the loss.

Pamg, Insecticides have a long history of complications when applied both correctly and incorrectly. I have sprayed an insecticide with such a small dosage, and with proper OSHA equipment, and still felt tingling sensations. Both organic and synthetic pesticides need to have proper preparation and application. I love my country, but I do not take for gospel everything the government says. Do you remember the government's 'harmless' insecticidal droplets sprayed over parts of the Bay Area in the early 80's to combat the Mediterranean Fruit Fly? It destroyed the paint on my car, and many, many more. Saturated fats used to be called a beneficial vitamin by the government. It's a healthy thing not to have absolute trust in the government.

NancyII, Poor water clarity is caused has numerous causes. Is it green murky with free algae, or chunky murky, with suspended organics, or brown murky from Peat in the filter, runoff from roof or landscaping? Once you determine which one, you can address it, and start to enjoy the pond again. If you can somehow contact me, I can help clean it up!

Ehagedorn, the are happy, thanks for asking!

Thanks! Do you have a pond?  My fish have such personality and I have taken as many safety measures to ensure their survival agaist any threats that are posed. I had a raccoon try to get a free dinner, but my dogs did what they are supposed to do. Way to go dogs!

I checked them out the next morning and they were fine.  This house has a covered porch and the pond sits on thevery edge of it with shrubs on two sides and the wall on another.  I didn't have a way to put one in the ground so I bought a prefab from Lowes and just set it up.  I put pots with plants around it to try to hide that black plastic.  Even so, it gets some morning sun.  When I set it up, I left it for almost two weeks before I put the fish in (as I did with the original in ground pond) and it turned murky right away even without the fish in it.  It's not chunky, just green and not clear.  Would algae eaters help?I read an article that said given the choice, the fish prefer the murky..maybe a defense mechanism.  Out of the 13 I originally had at my old place (thank you egrets) two survived and they are like Mutt and Jeff.  One is a lot bigger than the other.  When I leave in the morning and close both doors, they start coming to the surface looking for their breakfast.  Funny little critters, it's just too bad I can't see them.

I agree with YGH --- people worry too much.

This is my favorite song, it tells a lot:

Artist/Band: Covington Bucky
Lyrics for Song: A Different World
Lyrics for Album: Bucky

A Different World
Bucky Covington

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside

Chorus
It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

I had a pond for many years, my whole backyard had to be backhoed, and I am still in recovery mode. I loved my fish, I had just those 59 cent goldfish and a bucket of free mosquito fish but they were a great joy to me. My dogs  were good to them except when the goldfish would mate.  They had to be kept away from them, all that squirming mass was just to tempting. I dug my pond by hand, it had the layers for different plants, a water driping onto a large flat stone, the edges covered in a concrete- dirt-stone mix ~ I miss that sound and my guys coming to the surface when they saw me approach. And all the birds(no egrets) geting their morning bath.

Nancy I always had plants in and under the water, that helped mine stay clear,it was deep enough (5 feet) to be dark enough for my fish to "feel safe".  I am stumped otherwise.

Why did your yard have to be backhoed?  You lost your pond because of that?  Sad.

The egrets weren't kind to my fish at my old house, they thought is was a buffet.  I had a lot of them (gldfish) and ended up with the two who now reside in my murkey pond.  They hear the door shut in the morning and come to the surface looking for breakfast.  Funny little creatures.  They've never produced offspring so they are either of the same sex or they eat any that may have hatched.  I 've read that direct sunlight can cause algae so maybe that's where it came from.  I miss watching them swim around though.  A friend has a huge pond in her front yard, in the sun, and it's always clear..I don't get it.

We had to replace the old sewer pipe (tar paper!) going to the back yard connection and had two old  fruiting mulberries (messy and rat food), and the back hoe man was over zealous. I stopped him after he removed  1/2 of my clothesline ~ and most of my wallet. I lost my pond, the saved fish went to a friend, my garden that was double dug beds, 10 of them 4 by 4 ...sigh..  blackberries, asparagus beds.  But this autumn and winter-spring I am going to start all over again. When I moved here there was grass and one squash plant, I did it before , I can do it again.  I'd catch my neighbors peeking over my fence taking pictures, lol, because with all my veggies, flowers, pond, seating area and chickens folks thought it was the country~not the oleander area!

Psalm 117, your car must have had a super-cheap paint job.  We lived in L.A. County when they were doing medfly spraying every week.  Never hurt the paint on any of my family's cars and we didn't have a garage or a carport.  The stuff was sticky, but it washed off.
