Kern City is Among State's Ten Reddest

No, it's not Bakersfield.  And they get in a few zingers along the way.  By the way, the picture perfectly captures my memories of the place, but for the lack of heat-shimmer over the asphalt.

Doesn't this blog completely negate the 80/20 phenomenon that the Left has been crowing about? Oh, I forgot, repeat a lie often enough and it becomes "truth", for some, anyway.

Okay, now I'm ready for some Daily Kos/Huffington Post propaganda. The popcorn is on the stove.

Great pictures, though! : )

Not at all.  This is registered voters and likely includes folks who've passed on.

The 20 percent is the percentage of people willing to *ADMIT* publicly they're Republicans.   (Many probably prefer to say they're still on parole from the prostitution charges and can't vote yet...)  We don't have the whole remaining 80 percent.  Yet.

And this is Gallup, which leans Republican.  So the truth is probably *WORSE*.  A recent Research2000 poll showed just six percent of younger voters willing to admit to latent Republicanism.

LOL!  It's also among the highest for dirt, methamphetamine, dirty methamphetamine and bralessness.

Kern City?  Isn't that the retirement community?

posted by randomfactor on May 18, 2009 at 05:47 PM

I just *KNEW* someone was going to point that out, jfrancais.

Here's some entertainment for your popcorn, vanityfair.  You're not losing folks in *ONE* category, but *THAT* category is *ITSELF* shrinking.

I was mulling over that 80/20 thing myself.  In fact I was about to use  Wolfram|Alpha  "the greatest thing to happen to the mathematically impaired since counting on your fingers" search engine to help me figure this conundrum out.

And to think, these are California cities.  California, the reliable bastion of the Democratic party.  Not so much.

They're not wearing bras in Kern City?  Quick, cover them flappers! I hear sirens.  Maybe it's the fashion police.

LOL jfrancais!

Actually, my suspicion is that Kern City is, indeed, completely braless by 8:00 pm. every night.

But chock full of long, cotton nightgowns.

Fun Facts: Ridgecrest has the highest poverty rate among cities on this list, but it's wealthy by Kern County standards.

That is harsh comment to make about Kern, even by my standards.

Sooo...in Kern county the more Republican a community becomes, the wealthier it gets.  And in contrast, the more Democratic a community becomes, the more impoverished it gets.  Is that what the independent and unbiased Sacramento Bee is inferring?

Democrat math:  56/37 = 80/20.

posted by vanityfair on May 18, 2009 at 10:53 PM

And it appears that Democrats might finally re-evaluate a plank in their platform.

Or not.

Your thoughts on this new trend, randomfactor?

I was going to say correlation does not imply causation.  But that would imply the correlation to your comment is actually true.  It would also imply the correlation couldn't work the other way.

according to some here...a light pole leans right...

just because people register republican, doesnt mean they are down with the entire groupthink...a great example....our Governor.  he's waaaay left of the R party

Also on Ridgecrest....the reason for all the poverty.  back in the late 90's early 2000's, numerous welfare recipients (largest population of people not registered to vote)moved to Ridgecrest because of it's high unemployment....this was during the implementation of Calworks...where they had to go out and look for a job

that is the poverty issue right there

Exactly how did Kern City get to be a part of this thread? It is Ridgecrest. Did I miss something? I have a friend who works at Edwards and lives in Ridgecrest. He says there is a disproportionate amount of highly intelligent people there too. Although in Taft there Republican numbers must be in the 90's, yet over half the population is on Welfare and Disability. At least from talking to the students at Taft High. And they don't believe in technology...

The title, which should have been read "city in Kern County..."  Headline writing is not an exact science.

posted by CatherineBaker on May 19, 2009 at 10:08 AM

I am not a Democrat, so I don't really know what you're talking about with the 80/20%, Dril, unless it's the recent news that 21% of voters identify themselves as Republicans, or something to that effect.  After the 21% of Republicans, one would assume that some other percentage identify themselves as Democrats, and the remaining percentage identify themselves as neither.  I'm not sure, but it seems that you are implying that Democrats assume that all people polled who do not identify themselves as Republicans automatically identify themselves as Democrats (thus the 80%--bear with me.  I've been on vacation and missed some of the bakoblog tit-for-tatting.)

And then there's your bar graph, not about all voters, but only about college graduates, which is two different subsets of the population, of course, and then your bar graph shows a 52/37% split.

See?

posted by drilnliftcrude on May 18, 2009 at 08:28 PM

As we all know, 52 + 37 does not equal 100%.  I guess you mean to say that Democrats use incorrect numbers when you later comment:

Democrat math:  56/37 = 80/20.

Using incorrect numbers!!  Hahahaha!

This ain't horseshoes, Dril.  "Close" and "leaners" don't get you anything special.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/...

The GOP is hemorrhaging.  In particular, the stats show that you guys (and OxyRush) are blowing smoke about the reason why:  conservatives aren't the ones leaving the party.   It's the moderates, the young, and the college-educated.

But if you're happy with 21 percent, who am I to judge?

There you go again.

Actually, Ridgecrest is mostly a one company town. The biggest employer there is the Federal Government. Lot’s of folks working for the weapons testing complex and related jobs.

Yup, another island of Socialism. Just think Learnum, you and the folks of Ridgecrest are kindred spirits. Everybody's wallet is stuffed with tax payer money and benefits. And they probably think everybody else is on welfare too!

BTW: Average poverty there is much lower than Kern County as a whole. Median HH income is $59,763, and there are few people on official welfare. Of course since most work for the government, there’s lots of unofficial welfare.   lol

Average unemployment is around just 6%.
