Don't Forget the Perseids

Could be a good show for those of us lucky enough to be up past midnight.  Will have to take a peek during my break.

There was a bright moon last year too.  I thought it was this past Saturday since I was invited to a deck sleepover up in the mountains as I was last year.    It really doesn't seem like a year has passed does it?

Sounds fun.  I'll brew some iced tea and drag my patio chair out onto the grass and promptly fall asleep.  The 5:00am sprinklers should wake me up, though.  ; )

True story:  Two years ago for the Perseids some friends and I went up to the Tejon rest area (clear air) with a large blanket and spread it out in a dark, grassy area just before midnight.  We lay down with binoculars and anticipation.

Did you know they turn the sprinklers on just after midnight, at the Tejon rest area?

Good one RF!  I went up to the canyon years ago....great dark skies but a very narrow window.

Sometimes we haul our RV up to Tehachapi and camp out to view the Leonids.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...   November nights can get pretty cold but the Leonids are way cool to watch.  We sit at the table and look out the big RV window if the outside viewing is too extreme.   We have stayed at the Indian Hills Ranch Campground.   http://www.indianhillranch....     It is probably too late to reserve a spot for tonight's Perseids viewing.

I hope the smoke from the fire on the coast doesn't obscure things too much. The Perseids are not as bright as the Leonids on average, so a haze of smoke could really impact the viewing potential.

Should you fire up the barbie to enjoy the show, you may want to meditate on what St. Lawrence went through. After all, the meteor shower also is called the "Tears of St. Lawrence": http://www.mirabilis.ca/arc...

After all, the meteor shower also is called the "Tears of St. Lawrence":

Only by the superstitious.

For what it's worth, either the moon or the city lights foiled me.  Not a single sighting.

Saint Lawrence would have really appreciated those sprinklers Random.

Same here Random... even the regular stars were faint, so I think we just had bad viewing conditions in town.

Took a break last night just before 11 pm and saw a half-dozen bright and another half-dozen dim shooters.  Nice.  Went out again around 1 am and couldn't see anything at all.  (The moon was up by then, thought.)
