In a recent article that somehow made it to the front-page of a few newspapers, a series of academic studies has confirmed what the majority of
Americans have known for some time -- that the death penalty deters violent crime.
This myth-busting bit of news naturally outraged death penalty opponents who jumped all over the studies' "flawed research," arguing there is ample evidence to suggest that use of the death penalty may actually increase murder rates.

A few hundred words on local road issues, student test scores or the Republicans' legislative response to the Senate's ghastly immigration bill should probably occupy this space, but when a woman reaches the half-century mark she feels a responsibility to pause and reflect on the milestone, to take stock, perhaps even to share a few insights.
Especially if she's looking for an easy column to write because it's her birthday.

She remembers the tumultuous moments leading up to the birth and the doctor's triumphant announcement that she'd delivered a beautiful baby boy.
She remembers, too, the sudden, heavy silence that blanketed the room moments later and how, before the post-birth fog had...

School officials at Galesburg High School in Galesburg, Ill., were apparently so fed up with the raucous antics of...
The Vincent Brothers trial has come to a just and fitting end, but not, unfortunately, before the race issue reared its hideous head.
As if the trial weren't ugly enough.
The Harper family murders transcended race. The gruesome deaths of Joanie Harper, her three beautiful children and her mother, Earnestine, broke our communal heart and left all of us wondering what sort of monster could do this awful thing.
Yet there were those who simply couldn't resist playing the race card. One of...
