A OMG *edited* An*edited again * A Historical Day
No matter your political affiliation,we have seen history in the making.Several blogs have been put up about how "dangerous" one side is compared to the other, and many harsh things have been said back and forth. No one has mentioned history has been made~ both by the first serious woman candidate, and by the presumptive nominee,a black man. We have much to be proud of in this country and much that still needs work.I hope we all realize in our hearts that we must as country unite no matter the outcome in the election. I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on that~ America, long may she stand.

America, long may she stand According to the fake doctor, America will fall if Obama is elected. And here I thought playing the fear card would be out of the question for conservatives after using it in 2006 and getting soundly thrashed. Oh well. If they want to repeat history who am I to stop them?

I hope I don't come across as a Grammar Gestapo, but your title should really read, "An Historical Day" as opposed to "A Historical Day." It's "an" before every word beginning in "h." Lord knows I've committed more than my share of spelling errors, typos and grammatical blunders, so I'm not saying that as one who has it all together, when it comes to grammar and spelling. No one has mentioned history has been made~ both by the first serious woman candidate, and by the presumptive nominee,a black man. I would have been among the first to mention this as an historical first if this had been the right first woman and the right first African-American to reach these landmarks. Since it appears that this is the wrong woman at the wrong time, and the wrong African-American to rise at the wrong time, it kind of takes the fun out what would otherwise be a cause to celebrate :) I'll celebrate when Obama is defeated by McCain in November. That will be an historic day if there ever was one!

The poll of 1,600 voters in 45 Republican congressional districts showed on average a 33% approval rating for President Bush, a 38% approval rating for the incumbent Republican and a strong desire for change. http://online.wsj.com/artic...

It's pretty good, alright. And, sage, your point is well-taken. You don't become a good historian by simply telling us the good stuff. Even drawing our attention to bad events, and embarassing historical figures, like these, is being a good historian. posted by

True, sagefever, but it's hard to separate good history, from the one revealing that good history. And, as I've already mentioned, good history includes sharing both the good and the bad. I agree that it will be exciting. The most exciting thing about the next few months is when you see McCain take a sizable lead over Obama, and when we all witness him sailing on to victory in November. I'm dreaming, you say? Well, as John Lennon once said in a Beatles song, "You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope some day you'll join us (the Republicans), and the world will be as one. " I'll admit, that's a bit of a paraphrase :) posted by

Yes, the ceiling glass may be "broken," but, I can assure you that the ceiling glass won't be all that's broken if Obama becomes President. The nation itself, will break, and fall apart into too many pieces to ever be able to put it back together again. Kind of like Humpty Dumpty. posted by

i will be honest i dont follow politics very well. i dont know a darn thing about the canidates or what they are doing. i just know there is 2 men and a woman running. I believe that no matter who is running, someone is going to screw up, no one is going to be perfect, that is life though. and whether our president is white, black, hispanic, female, male, straight, lesbian, gay (whatever) no one is going to be happy. I know plenty of people that were 150% behind bush, and now they are anti-bush.... I know there are a lot of people in here behind politics, and i know all of you will continue to go at eachother til this election is over (some will still argue after) but remember, no matter who the president is, you still live in america, and there will be more presidents to come.. and this year we have made history :) posted by

Sage: We cannot unite behind any of the current crop of candidates. Why? They stink and we are all mad about it. I doubt we will ever be able to unite any one person. Even against an obvious threat, there are those with blinders on. It is our nature to tear down what others build up. posted by

Anyone see a pattern here??? Like over the years the gradual government take over of our private lives is now going to be a total takeover so they can “save” us? Yet the core of our way of life demands that we do,at the least, symbolically unite~ even as we fight the other side,it is the American way of doing things~always has been, always will be. Yet we are one country and I simply want to celebrate that .Look to Uganda, etc. for countries that really do not unite. posted by

Well said Tiff. Witters you miss my point~ as a country we made history. No President will "save us" ,we must save ourselves,by becoming more involved . We have a 3 part system for that very reason~ our system saves us from ruin and tyrants.

In our culture, we do tend to call somebody who is both, black. Why do we do that? Does anybody know where that comes from? I've wondered that myself. My grandpa came from the Fiji Islands and my Grandmother was Creole. My maternal grandparents are both black yet I consider myself black. My kids have my ethnicity combined with their mother who is white. I still consider them black. I think it's all about perception. posted by

The reason may lie in our past JF~ back in the day if you had the least bit of mixed blood you were "not white" according to government census takers. Now we are beginning to see through the genome project that these differences are simply skin deep . Yes Sage and let's hope this "history" is not our undoing. There may be a 3-part system but they are ALL politicians and as far as this country being "united" we are no longer that. We have been pulled apart by the very 3 you think are wonderful. They are our tyrants (because we let them be) and they will be our ruin - it has already started. posted by

"The nation itself, will break, and fall apart into too many pieces to ever be able to put it back together again. Kind of like Humpty Dumpty." Why do you say that? It seems pretty broken right now, thanks to Shrub and his fellow jerks. Hillary was only in it for the pride, I think. If you think Obama will not be a good president because of his young age and his lack of experience, I remind you that one of the best and most beloved of our presidents was younger than Obama and had just about as much experience. But he had a will and heart to change this country for the better, and Obama has the same thing. History has indeed been made in this election, on gender issues and race as well, but also in age. McCain is older than Reagan was when he was elected to his second term, isn't he? Seems we are crossing many boundaries. I rather wish Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth and their like were alive to see it. posted by

As far as the color thing...I think people play it to their skin tone. What I'm saying is my kids are mixed black/white. They know they are mixed, 2 of them call themselves whitebecause they are very light skinned and could pass as hispanic or very tanned white kids, the younger one calls herself black as she is darker than the 2. I don't care what they call themselves because they are cute and intelligent kids. I however, when filling out documents for them mark the American Indian box. We all have our Indian cards and they have that right. So, yeah my kids are like the 31 flavors and we are all so happy. PS: At the DMV, she marked the white box. posted by

Well said ghost~ I thought of my Nana yesterday, she would be amazed and proud.I also thought of the many of the past who would be proud of this day.

Another attempt at a positive post regarding this historic occasion gets the Bakersfield back-hand from the peanut gallery. The resentment and hostility over the achievement is palpable when you see this stuff on the screen. My question is what have a lot of rich old white guys in the White House done for you lately? Any casual look at our economy will tell you that a very small percentage have been profiting at the expense of a lot of folks these past 30 years. I raise my glass in salute to two individuals that broke the mold and offer hope instead of the same tired old refrains of mongering to the fear instilled. Kudos, Sage, for your post! posted by

I'm gonna take a risk and also make a comment about the original topic. Yes Sage. Obama made history yesterday. Never before has our country had a woman AND a Black vying for the position to run for president. I think it says a lot about how far we've come in spite of ourselves but, as I said early on (and I haven't seen anything to change my mind yet), that we haven't come THAT far. I believe the the mistrust of Obama will cost him dearly and, when the chips are down and the economy is bad (along with other problems) the people won't reach for a liberal to run the country. Considering where we started, and where we are today, I'm pretty darned proud of us as a nation. In terms of years, we're relatively young and real growth takes time. It will come.....but not today. posted by
