Elemental Disruption

"Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats." Diane Arbus

My life seems to operate sideways~ backwards almost~ and I have come to see thats right for me. A rain of snakes, disruption that cause's growth ,the world split in two.Everyone has there own path, mine has been one of thought, mostly of things folks today seem to disregard. Truth, personal integrity,politeness,...not all eschew these things. For me its been the easiest way to be~ any other way leads me to more trouble..and a sense of humor, above all about myself. Laughter keeps a person sane, and I enjoy seeing the coyote in myself~ the eternal trickster

sagefever - > Deep Thoughts~whats in ,on my mind and whats out there. -> MRSA ~ FDA now checking our meat supply
MRSA ~ FDA now checking our meat supply

I saw a small article in the paper yesterday about this. The early facts are not encouraging,so my advice is to keep your eyes open and practice excellent food safety standards.

Another good reason for my conversion to vegetarian a few years ago sagefever.

I am having that same conversation right now with Mr. Sage ...this may just be the swing point I was looking for.

FYI - I saw a news report last night saying that MSRA and Staph were found on movie theatre seats!  The Dr. said to make sure you wash your hands after sitting in the seats, but hell, who hasn't eaten a buttery bowl of popcorn during the movie?  The Dr. also said make sure you don't have open cuts.

Would this hold true for Kosher and Halla meat?

MSRA has been found at gyms also. There have been a few cases here in boston from people getting MSRA from workout equip and locker rooms.

The link points out they are just beginning the study and are going to look into organic and free range meats, so I am not sure about those products. Cooking will destroy the organisms, but a cut and bad handling can pass it on before cooking.

Waaaaaah!  Sage, quit freaking me out!  Now I'm going to have to go through this whole dang house with Lysol and bleach!  Why do I keep itching?  "Out, out damn spot!"      &n bsp;       &nb sp;   [Catherine twitching in corner with Kleenex boxes on feet]

Just slow down and  slow breath Cat! But i know what you mean..I'm buying latex disposable gloves for all my food needs...

posted by sagefever on Jun 11, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Ron~ MRSA is not aids~ they are however equal opportunity diseases.

AllRed, both people who got MSRA are hetero!

I've been exposed to MRSA frequently.  Doesn't scare me anymore--just an inconvenience.

.

Think of it...literally...as evolution in action.

posted by CatherineBaker on Jun 11, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Yeah right, Random.  It can evolve all it wants--I just don't want it evolving in my body!  *Itch*  *scratch*

MRSA was one of the complications that my dad died from about a month ago.

posted by sfinboston52 on Jun 11, 2008 at 12:27 PM

my sister in-law died last year, they believe it was from the MSRA she had picked up the year before at a hospital in LA.

posted by randomfactor on Jun 11, 2008 at 12:29 PM

I'm sorry to hear that, jfrancis.  I don't mean to belittle the danger to certain people.  Due to circumstances beyond my control I spent a *LOT* of time in hospitals over the past several years and around MRSA-positive patients.

.

The most important thing about MRSA is that it reminds us what can happen when we ignore the fact of evolution.

Not afraid RF~ but we do need to be aware of it,eh? I have been exposed myself, but having taken precautions ,all is well. Clearly that is not the case in some instances, this is one of the fastest growing infections out there. Friends caught it within the last year and the local hospital was inferring it was the company they kept~ while the CDC says that MRSA is most often caught in hospitals...until now at least.

JF~ i know I have already said it~ but I am so sorry.

I think a lot of this would go away if people went back to ensuring washing hands, wipin down surfaces, just  go back to the basic cleaning.

posted by jfrancais on Jun 11, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Well I don't think people should quit living because of the threat of MRSA. It's evolution in action, as you stated earlier.

posted by sfinboston52 on Jun 11, 2008 at 01:06 PM

I agree JFran...people should still go on living. To often we live in a fear based society, fear of crime, fear of change, fear of most recent disease, etc etc etc.

Great book to read is The Power of Now by Eckhert Tolle.

Oddly enough, they've found a major "vector" for hospital-borne infections was...doctor's neckties.  Seldom washed, often draped onto the patient during examinations.  Insist that your doctor switch to the bow-tie look. :)8

Whether you're a meat eater or vegan, all these new bacterial strains  have a way of finding you.  The public needs to know that factory styled production of pigs, cows, sheep, chickens and turkeys put the nation's health at risk. Take a cruise up I-5 and check the condition of the cows at the cattle pens and dairy farms.  Think about having  too many  cows penned in too little space. Where does the run-off go for all these cows? The state is populated with these dairies that sit right next to fields where farmers grow produce and vegetables. Factory ranching and farming must stop. New use rules need to  be put  in place for ranchers and farmers and for food processors.

The quaint idea of a family farm with pigs, chickens and cattle roaming pristine pastures is just a memory today. The vast majority of  meat we eat are fed  remnants of  disposed pet parts, corn variants, anti-biotics and hormones.  Puts the weight on fast, but does a body (man & beast) absolutely no good.  Government (we) needs to  take action on this growing crisis, and soon.

So true adam~ and when we visit the Doctor, make sure those antibiotics are really needed, use soap and plenty of hot water, not all those antbiotics added products~they just hasten the day we have more antibiotic resistant strains. BTW~ http://www.ucsusa.org/food_... is another good resource.

Cruelty to animals:        ; Some countries eat dogs and cats    some kill for there tongue or horn and waste the meat    All meat is given to us for food     be it veal (young animal) or cattle of older age

Dogs or cats in this country that roam the streets have to be taken care of       if they are not adopted then they must be put to sleep   that is the humane way    less suffering for the animals

My rathers would be a nice home for all     (dogs, cats)  but beef, chicken, etc are given to us that enjoy meat     veggie's are given to you that believe other wise

SF I find this statement very strange and borderline insulting.

"I think a lot of this would go away if people went back to ensuring washing hands, wipin down surfaces, just  go back to the basic cleaning."

You make it sound like we've become a nation of dirty people who don't wash hands or clean houses.  You use of "went back to" was the kicker as if we used to but don't now.

My ex boss's husband died of MRSA after minor knee surgery in a hospital.  You wouldn't expect to go in healthy and lose your life.

posted by sagefever on Jun 12, 2008 at 07:50 AM

Nancy~ I can not speak for SF,but I think you might be surprised at the amount of bad hand washing technique~ lots of soap, hot water ,under the water scrubbing for 2-3 minutes, then using a paper towel to turn off the faucets, open any doors etc.( Can you tell I worked at a hospital lol ) Most dish soaps and hand cleaners seem to have anti bacterial components, that has led to resistant strains. Plain old soap, plain old bleach~ good stuff.

Hospitals have long been known as sources of things like MRSA~ I could tell you horror stories, about Doctors and nurses~ folks who should know better. No surprise the average Joe maybe lacking in basic hygiene awareness, and safe food  handling practices.
