Elemental Disruption

"Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats." Diane Arbus

My life seems to operate sideways~ backwards almost~ and I have come to see thats right for me. A rain of snakes, disruption that cause's growth ,the world split in two.Everyone has there own path, mine has been one of thought, mostly of things folks today seem to disregard. Truth, personal integrity,politeness,...not all eschew these things. For me its been the easiest way to be~ any other way leads me to more trouble..and a sense of humor, above all about myself. Laughter keeps a person sane, and I enjoy seeing the coyote in myself~ the eternal trickster

sagefever - > Deep Thoughts~whats in ,on my mind and whats out there. -> PBS~ Americas Best Television:Three Must See Shows
PBS~ Americas Best Television:Three Must See Shows

A few weeks ago I was a cheerleader for Fresh & Easy (keep working Cassie!).
This week it came to my attention that many of you do not watch PBS, so I thought I would switch uniforms, as it were, and bring a few programs to light that might interest you. PBS, is I realize, considered by some to be some sort of “commie’ front~ and I hope to show you just how very American PBS really is.
The first show is not very American, but it does feature our “cousins” across the pond and past does inform the future~ plus it is good fun! Last night I bid a fond farewell to Mystery Theater’s excellent series of Miss Marple, the fictional detective creation of Agatha Christie. Check those listings, many shows repeat and this series was very well done, a do not miss for lovers of murder, poison and plucky old ladies. Next week (Sundays 9:00p.m.), the mysteries continue with a new detective, more murder and mayhem.
Tonight at 8:00 p.m. ~ History Detective: This show accepts historical mysteries, things, places etc that ordinary people have and may be part of American history.
Tonight, a person submits a twisted piece of metal that story attributes to the famed airplane of Amelia Earhardt. It is fascinating the work that goes into verifying a pieces authenticity.
The site has a DIY section that allows you to find out if that autograph of Lincoln is authentic, a section on detective techniques and videos of past episodes.
Time Team America~ Wednesdays 8:00 p.m.~ my newest addiction, features a dream team of archaeologists  armed with the latest in technology and techniques , who visit sites that need additional development. The episode that explored the Roanoke Islands Fort Raleigh, the first English settlement in America was fascinating. Each episode is presented in an entertaining and educational way~ not at all dry and scholarly.
This week’s dig is at the buried streets of New Philadelphia, the first town established by free African Americans, they comb the area for evidence of the schoolhouse where children learned.
The site for Time Team America has some great features: Site Reports that give all the details and a “Since We Left” section that keeps you up on what new developments are found at each site. For the budding ,or ancient wanna be archaeologists among us there is a section called Field School where you can find out if you have what it takes to be an archaeologist. There are also some video clips. I really recommend this one if you love history. If you have small children, this show will inspire them~ what child does not dream of finding buried treasure.
This next show I am excited about~ The National Parks: America's Best Idea. It begins on September 27th,at 8:00p.m.
Six years of filming in some of America's most beautiful locations, this series promises to be at the bare minimum a visual wonder. Burns says, “You think you know (about the Parks) but you don’t”. Six episodes explore our connection to the Parks, the people behind their creation and preservation, our connection to the land and the concept of democracy that the Parks represents. The 150 year history of the Parks is outlined with first person accounts, photos and historical documentation. The Parks story is our story~ full of tensions, conflict and yet a deep healing that only nature can bring. Check the site now for an preview video and when the series starts go back as Burn films always have an interactive and educational features.
Sure PBS has its political shows~ but those are not the focus of my post. These three shows, in particular, have no political bias, no “commie” agenda. They are just explorations of all things American.
I hope one will catch your interest.

Good shows, all.

Thanks witbee~ I knew you would think so~ I hoped so anyway! ;-)

I love this country and finding out about all the nooks and crannies of our history is fascinating to me.

The real "commie" stuff is on NPR, not PBS. PBS has some great programming.

LOL...I just had to use that buzz word. Attention seeker that I am...

I'm a PBS addict. I also selectively watch History and Discovery channels regularly. It's not so much I'm an egghead or a commie, I just have a low threshhold for sitcoms and unrealistic cop shows. I'd rather learn something about the real world. Yet, I do record The Office and 30 Rock without fail. Even us elitist intellectual commie sheeple have to let the gray matter take a break and indulge some nonsense.

Exactly my sheeple commie elitist effete intellectual thoughts~ of course since they cloned us...  ;-)

Well that explains why I love NPR so much.  I just thought I was a cheapo (not a pinko) for the free programming.

Listened lately?  They've gone pretty right-wing.

It's getting hard to work all these buzz words into a coherent sentence.

Let's just say we are intelligent people who demand more from TV and radio.along with the occasional fluff show. I love 30 Rock myself.

Sage, if you're trying for coherent sentences you'll *NEVER* get the cadence right...

Good post Sage. PBS hasn't done a new season in a while but my family loved the House series..Manor House, Frontier House, Colonial House...I remember watching Frontier House and they advertised for Colonial House and I actually downloaded an application. My hubby looked at me like I was crazy and then told me I was crazy :o) What can I say....one of my dream jobs is to be a docent at Williamsburg.

I just found this site~ this artist is one of the "behind the scenes" Americans that help us see the beauty of our Parks. The site is a little slow~ fitting really~ but this mans work is worth the look.

I wish they'd do another "Frontier House"-esque show.  Those were great!  I always thought it would be interesting to do "Depression House" and shove a few modern families into that time period in our history.   See how much they complain after that. :)

I have to confess I liked those shows too~ especially when the inevitable break downs occurred. After watching those shows, I tried hard not to complain myself.

One last thought as I head out the door.  Motopoet told me that aside from just liking Huell Howser on PBS, he really takes you to some great places.  Places you may never heard of or imagined and places he now wants to visit.  It' sjust one more great feature of PBS.  And I lOVE the mysteries, murder, mayhem and all.

Just don't forget Huell for a great travelogue.   He may be a tad corny but worth the information.

Huell's good people.  He's just the same in person.

As my status update says, I spent all day yesterday watching the rerun of the Cronkite Remembers series on Discovery Channel. It's nice to have some good history shows, particularly when they can get some first-person accounts of recent historical events. I wish there were more programming like that on TV these days.

posted by sagefever on Jul 27, 2009 at 06:10 PM

As you can see~ I would rather watch a history oriented show any day.

I read that Huell can be pretty fractious to work for but my guess is he wants things to be right.  He's done some great pieces on Bakersfield and KC but what I like is he seems just tickled  no matter where he is.  And if I've heard "Mah GOSH, this is the most (beautiful, most interesting, most exciting, most unusual, take your pick) place" once I've heard it a hundred times.

One of my favorites I watch in reruns is the teardrop trailer gathering.  Another was the four corners of CA when he confronted (in good humor) a couple of Oregonians and informed them they actually lived in CA  by however they establish that sort of thing.  Those guys got a little huffy and the show was funny.

I'm always surprised at Californians who have never heard of him.  Their loss.

Not to mention he is one fine specimen of manhood.  (sorry, just had to throw that in)

LOL Nancy~ true that. He did the walk up to half dome~ healthy man ;-) but I had to close my eyes when they got to close to the edge.  I have a *serious* case of fear of heights.

I just know some of you are just dying to know~ so Yes~~ the piece that a man had was part of Amelia Earhardt's plane.

Apparently she crash landed in Hawaii and an airman scooped up a fragment of the plane. The cool thing is ,now that the piece has been authenticated,it can be used to verify other pieces that people speculate belong to her plane.

As if we didn't know already we are officially one week behind. But if it is any consolation ,L.A. must be too~ next week  should be about New Philadelphia.

Last nights TimeTraveler was about the amazing Ranch Creek site~ a true national treasure.

I have followed this site from the moment I first heard about it~ and having the team there for 3 days will definitely allow for more discoveries there.

Anyone else on Brighthouse analog cable noticing that the PBS station on channel 18 (KVPT) keeps pixelating? It has to be the feed to Brighthouse since analog cable does not pixelate with bad signals. At least there's the LA PBS station (KCET) on channel 10 that seems to have a clean feed.

posted by sagefever on Jul 30, 2009 at 01:13 PM

It(KVPT) does that with over the air (digital) ~ but I have been turning off the converter box and get KCET over the air with a clean signal.

KVPT's signal must be weak...plus I have big trees all around so that messes with the signal

At least both of them were showing the Time Traveler special last night.
