Foul-mouthed bhangra Munchkin -- Who?
We’ve slashed open our mixed bag of weekend events and out jumped super-happy bhangra music, the pinball wizard and ghetto Munchkins who live in your speakers.
Vaisakhi Mela
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Where: Fox Theater, 2001 H St.
Cost: $25 and $35. VIP tickets $45. Available at the box office or through Vallitix locations, vallitix.com or 322-5200.
On the heels of Punjabi superstar Gurdas Maan’s performance at the Rabobank, reigning Indian pop stars Miss Pooja (the Britney Spears of bhangra, says producer Amrit Dhaliwal) and Miss Neelam take over the Fox Theater with a host of other stars. Vaisakhi Mela celebrates the Sikh New Year and the birth of the religion.
“Da’ Hip-Hop WIZZard of OZ”
When: 7 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday, 4 p.m. Sunday
Where: Bakersfield City School District Auditorium, 1300 Baker St.
Cost: $15 at door, $12 with canned food donation
LaQuette Milner, founder of the nonprofit LQ’s Performing Arts Center, wrote this wild, colorful remake of “The Wizard of Oz” set in Bakersfield.
Dorothy is mocked for dreaming of becoming a hip-hop dancer. When she arrives in Oz, a giant radio (no house here) falls on the Wicked Witch’s sister. The Munchkins tear out of the boombox, and tasting freedom, they breakdance.
Dorothy pursues the Wicked Witch, who captures dancers and makes them her slaves. Tin Man wears a pimp hat. Scarecrow is timid as ever. Cowardly Lion wears velour and walks out with a girl on each arm, but in the end, he’s still a crybaby.
The Munchkins don’t walk down the yellow brick road. They “Walk It Out,” as in that hip-hop song by Unk (“Westside walk it out/Southside walk it out.”)
In the end, Dorothy gains the confidence to follow her dream. And scores a pair of glittery red Converse sneakers.
Comedian Jim Trino
When: 8 p.m. Saturday
Where: Nile Bar & Grill, 1721 19th St.
Cost: $16 at the door.
Toilet jokes, gags about naughty bits, and “The Naked Truth,” as told by Bakersfield comedian Jim Trino. He likes props -- the kind a lonely gal might find in an adult shop -- so you’ve been warned. Special guest Los Angeles comedian David Burger bills himself as a white trash Jewish guy straight outta Compton.
The Who Tribute
When: 9 p.m. Saturday
Where: Fishlips, 1517 18th St.
Cost: $10, at Fishlips or or through Vallitix locations, vallitix.com or 322-5200.
The stand-in Pete Townshend and company recreate an early 1970s The Who concert -- costumes, instruments, stage gear and all, Fishlips reports.
They’ll cover the major hits as well as short Tommy and Quadrophenia sets.
Cafe Med Wine Tour
When: June 7
Cost: $95
Details: 834-4433
Make reservations now for Cafe Med’s all-day tour of Central Coast wineries. Harlan Shanklin, catering manager, says there’s 10 spots left as of Tuesday afternoon.
Tour includes a continental breakfast at Cafe Med, mimosas and muffins on the ride there, and the restaurant’s fabulous lunch of Cajun shrimp, garlic mashed potatoes and leg of lamb at Tobin James Cellars.
