Holiday Inn Select to become Marriott?
The Holiday Inn Select in downtown Bakersfield may soon become a Marriott.  An estimated $6 million renovation project to upgrade the hotel is underway and is expected to be complete by late September.  What do you think?  Is a more prestigious hotel in downtown a step in the right direction?  Would a Marriott help lure more visitors and conventions to downtown and help improve the image of downtown?

I hope the hotel improves the computer access systems so they work. We had an awful time getting the Internet to work at a recent convention.

Maybe I just had a bad experience at the Marriott in Portland, but that chain is not high on my list. I prefer Hiltons to almost all others although Shilos are really good.

I didn't know the Holiday Inn Select was *not* prestigious.   Why would a so-called upgrade bring more people to Bako?  They either want to visit or they don't.  If it were Super 8 to Marriott, that might be worth talking about.  It'll take more than a hotel change to spiff up our image.

Will this mean that dumb people can stay there now? :)

I know that if I was looking for a vacation destination, traveling to visit The Kern County Museum and CALM, and staying at a Marriott, would be pretty tempting.

Hopefully, Marriott will take on the Holiday Inn Select hotel. Wishful thinking would include another top flight hotel concern (Hyatt or Westin) putting in a big imprint in that area to suck up and rid the blight around 19th after the Federal Court House gets approved and built.

I think it is a good sign for Bakersfield that they think that the area is worth it. I think that you really have to give credit to the promoters at the Rabobank for maintaining their level of investment, and for consistantly drawing some first-class talent. There is a new intellegence there that is a beacon that others can/will/do follow. I hope the new services can attract some serious corporations to the district.

With all of the Mormans in this town no wonder the Marriott would take over the Holiday Inn Select.

We love the Marriott and stay at them as much as we can.  Yes, they are more expensive then some others, but with Marriott you get QUALITY and to us that is important.  The Holiday Inn Select is nice and the restaurant/bar is just okay.  The food at the Marriott hotels is far better then the Holiday Inn Select in Bakersfield.  So we do hope that the change comes about.  If for nothing else, we can eat in a classy place before a concert.

As long as the management of the new Marriott keeps up with the new change, it would help lure new visitors to downtown area.
