Honest question. I'm not sure I've read this anywhere, but would this law recognize same gender marriage from another state? (Mass.) Also, would federal employees in CA have their legally married same gender spouses covered by benefits (since the fed gov doesn't recognize same-gender marriage?) posted by

Linfestyp, I think the answers are 1) yes, and 2) no. And CA same-sex marriages would be recognized by NY. posted by

As for CA recognizing marriages for MA, Canada, Spain, South Africa etc...yes CA will recognize those same-sex marriages. As for benefits from the federal gov. the answer is no..since DOMA is currently enforced. Also, Fed/IRS will not recognize same-sex couples and any benefits received one one spouse for the other would be consider income in kind and taxed. posted by

If same-sex marriage is not the "will" of the people of the State of California today, it will be in the very near future. Proposition 22 passed with 61.2% of the vote in 2000. Polls show a 5-10% increase in support for gay marriage in the 8 years since then. This indicates that the vote should be very close indeed. More interesting, the most recent field poll broke support for gay marriage into age categories, this showed: 18-29yrs 68% approve 30-39yrs 58% approve 40-49yrs 51% approve 50-64yrs 47% approve 65+yrs & nbsp; 36% approve Every year, several hundred thousand 18 year olds, a strong majority of whom support gay marriage, become eligible to vote, while every year several hundred thousand elderly persons, a strong majority of whom oppose gay marriage, pass on and are dropped from the voter rolls. So its only a matter of time until the "majority" becomes the "minority". posted by

BTW: A researcher at the UCLA estimates that gay marriage could inject $370 million into the state’s economy over the next three years—provided, of course, that California voters don’t decide to ban gay marriage in November of this year. Gay Weddings Could Boost California Economy by $370 Millionhttp://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm...>M.V. Lee Badgett, research director at the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy at the UCLA School of Law, estimates that gay weddings could add $370 million to the state economy over the next three years, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times. http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm...>Wedding planners, bakers, florists, caterers, and hotels have already noticed an uptick in business since the California supreme court's May 15 decision to overturn a state ban on gay marriage. http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm...>The estimate is based on the assumption that about half of California's 92,000 same-sex couples will get married and that those couples will spend approximately $8,040 on their weddings. http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm...>The $370 million figure is a rough estimate since no one can accurately predict how many gay couples will actually tie the knot nor how much couples will spend on their weddings. http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm...>The figure could be smaller since the supreme court ruling could be nullified. State officials are currently verifying petition signatures for a proposed November 4 ballot initiative that would amend the state constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtm...>If the supreme court does not stay its ruling, California counties can begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples beginning June 17. Source for this copy/paste was the advocate. For a state that is needing money, dont understand why turning down a good source of income which will help keep taxes low. SPAM CODE: FUVQG ??? posted by

Calif. court won't delay gay weddings until voteJustices deny appeal for stay until voters decide on ban initiativehttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id... there are about 100,000 couples who live in CA that will now be able to marry. I said a couple of years ago that it was just a matter of time and that time is on our side.
