You gotta love prisons in California, they're the new office high rises for crime on the street. And we pay for them. How cool is that? Hart Park has turned into a great family place since they banned alcohol years ago. I've had barbecues there with friends of every race and ethnicity and never had any problems. We shouldn't let these supremacist types ruin things for everybody.

Bakersfield has a unique climate; people who truly feel impervious to the consequences of their actions (cell phones while driving...?). If there was one thing I can credit Bakersfield for (and it's a stretch) it's that folks here are getting their asses off the fences and taking a stand. I, for one appreciate knowing who the haters are (cough!KenMettler!Cough!!). It makes life so much simpler knowing who to trust, do business with (NOT Senor Pepes on Granite Falls), and who to turn to in times of crisis. If the faux-wannabe-nazis of B-field wanna ply their trade then I say go for it- but at least wear identifiable t-shirts or something so I know to walk on by.

I must live in a bubble, I had no idea that we had skinhead gangs in Bakersfield.  Then again, seems like most men that could have hair, shave their heads anyway.  Maybe they should get tattoos, oh that's right, most people have those covering their bodies as well.  I am thankful that these morons were caught.  Of course they will feel no remorse or shame.  They have cast a shadow over the rest of us who are all trying to live well amongst each other.  If they want to be in a gang so bad, why don't they bring back the chain gang and let them know that the state of California means business when they are serving our state to repay their debt to society.

I caught that as well vanity...a cell phone driver & gang members are 2 different scenarios all together.  Silly statement (sorry miles).  I totally agree with the cell phone driving.  I'd really be interested in the statistics on accidents and phone usage.  Most people drive with 1 hand anyway....or is it because we're talking on the phone?...does that mean the gov'ts. next step will be to forbid us from talking to anyone in the car?

When did it become racist to say that the majority of the weekend Hart Park users are Hispanic?   When did it become un PC to state a fact?

I've been through that park more times in the last year than I have in the last 20 years...and the majority are Hispanic.  No problems, no issues, no compalints..just stating a fact.

Sometimes I take the river road instead of the through road just because it's sooo pretty.  Never had a problem.  If others are afraid to use the park, then it will remain as it is so don't complain.

Just an armchair analyst opinion but when economic times get bad people strike out at whoever they can.  They can't do anything about government or the economy so they lash out at the nearest target and often it's a group vastly different than themselves.

I'd like to see a wider variety of cultures at the park too but that's not the Hispanics fault.  I guess if I had a complaint it would be that I can't stand Mariachi Music..but then, I can't stand progressive jazz (or most jazz), hip hop, rap or hard rock either.

Nancy, you're right.  It is a fact.  I really would like to see charitable organizations get together to make Hart Park better than it once was.  It's just falling apart.  It has the potential to really be something special AND profitable.

I don't think it's un-pc to state that hart park is used by the majority of hispanics...at least not by my standards.  But perhaps you are forgetting the partying & car to car traffic with music blasting out of each vehicle on wknds. back in the 80's.  Those were white folk, throwing their beer cans out the window.  Today it is filled with hispanics leaving dirty diapers.  Lets face it, no matter what color you are, if you were not taught to (oh yes, here comes that word of the day again) R-E-S-P-E-C-T others or their property, then you would leave behind any kind of mess you darn well choose.  I am saddened by the state of Hart Park.  It once was a wonderful place to go.  I hope one day we will have that same pleasure again.  There truly is so much potential.

Is it really all that much more effort to use an earpiece?  Being I'm in the car for at least 2-3 hours minimum a day, I do notice a difference between the way I drove prior to using hands-free.

You people astound me! Those who know me know I have blacks in my family, so I'm no racist, but I AM a realist. This kind of thing is not unusual going the other way as well, it just doesn't make headlines when a white person gets beaten up. These guys will be in no more danger in prison than they would have been anyway as a part of the Aryian Brotherhood. I think skinheads are a testament to the ignorance of racism, but so are Familia Estrada to the Mexicans and the Crips to the Blacks.

lilbit - I don't think many here are saying that there aren't race-related crimes being performed by non-whites - but being that I'm Caucasian myself, I must admit that I tend to think more harshly towards white supremacists, because I feel that they are continuing to make it more difficult for those of us who do not think like them to reach out to the minority (I say minority lightly, because I don't believe that anyone should be labeled as such) communities.  There are still plenty of non-caucasians who feel very distrustful of "the Man" and I can honestly see why they would still have fear and animosity, especially in this town, which continues to breed racism on all fronts.

I live near Hageman & Coffee. At the small neighborhood park I noticed "KKK Rulz Hail Hitler" written w/ sharpie on the slide....idiots in training ~ as I'm sure it was one of the neighborhood middle school kids.  To them it was more controversial than writing something sexy. Goo be Gone wouldn't get it off...but my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser did.  I agree with maybelline in that a community effort can help change the situation...those who want change must be willing to take an active part for change. Yup, there are Bozos in every group. No one is immune. For example, I've heard all the Spanish-language slurs for other ethnic groups, and some came from the mouths of highly educated people, so I know the haters come in every color.

Messerd, I base my assertions on information form friends who are Correctional Officers at the prison in Delano. Their observations lead me to believe that the black and white inmates are poorly organized. I also have  a former student who was recruited by the Mexican Mafia at Soledad. I have an idea of what goes on in prison. From your statements  I get the idea you may have done some time.

I know that the movies are for entertainment. For those who have never seen History X or American Me, it's time.

In my opinion, nothing is going to happen to those woods. Believe or not most inmates want stability. If there's a riot they lose their privileges so on and so forth. Not all prisons can be said to want stability though Pelican Bay, and other MAX security units are examples of those. These guys will end up in a college campus like Wasco or FTTF Folsom.

Also I believe there is still a hit out on Edward J. Olmos but I may be mistaken. He was getting death threats after that movie was released.

These lames aren't going to be killed in prison for what they did at hart park, to even think that is ridiculous!   That would cause a race war over two boneheads!  Not going to happen.   they probably wanted to go back to prison...Started missing all their homeboys and family members.  

While I agree with some bloggers' comments, and disagree with others (naturally), I think that what it all boils down to is a small number (of EVERY race, mind you) ruining it for the majority. My spouse and I bring our puppy to the River Walk on Stockdale often, and we see a mix of races who are all very kind and will smile and say hello to us. Then there are those who blatantly throw trash on the ground when they are 3 feet from a garbage can, run around using foul language, and cause a general ruckus. We have seen the same at other parks as well.

Without knowing an exact number, just by observation I can say that the majority of park-goers in town are respectful and very nice, no matter what their race is. It is those few that have NO respect that but the black mark on those that do have respect. It is a shame that there are so many ignorant individuals who cannot tell the difference.

It is easy to say that one race of individuals are the cause of our parks' problems, but it doesn't necessarily make it true. It simply means that there is a greater number of that race of individuals that visit the park. It is not fair to them for others to assume then that they are the problem.

Steve, My buddy and I drove through the parking lot behind the museum at Central park yesterday (she hadn't seen it yet) and there in an empty parking spot sat two fast food bags..looked like Taco Bell...while I was ranting about the idiots my buddy found a better word for them...she said "they're A-Holes."  What could I say?  I couldn't argue.
