Should the Secret Service have investigated alleged local threat to Obama?

Bill Sekeres of Bakersfield is in a bit of trouble with the U.S. Secret Service.

The 73-year-old retired executive may or may not have threatened to "take out" the president of the United States during idle dinner conversation recently at a Bakersfield restaurant.

Sekeres says he can't recall whether he also included Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in his alleged threat because he isn't sure he made a threat, and if he did make a threat, well, he didn't really mean it.

"Truthfully, I can't remember if I said this or not -- that if I ever get a terminal illness, I'm going to take out Obama and Pelosi," Sekeres said. "I may have. I may not have. I don't know," he said. "If I did, it would have been in jest."

In any case, someone apparently overheard him and took him seriously enough to alert authorities. On Friday, two agents from the Secret Service office in Fresno drove to Bakersfield to have a not so idle chat with Sekeres.

"It is our job to investigate all threats against the president," said Gil Lejarde, resident agent in charge of the Fresno office. "We did speak to him. Right now we're still investigating."

In the meantime, the blog question remains: Should the Secret Service have investigated Sekeres' alleged threat to the commander in chief?

Sekeres does not remember if he threatened to "take out" Obama and/or Pelosi?  How idle was that dinner conversation?  How much wine was consumed?  Why would someone at the restaurant fabricate a story that Sekeres, out of all the people at the restaurant, threatened the president?  I don't think anyone would do that because that person would know that the other diners at Sekeres' table would quickly refute this report.  I would speculate that, after a couple of glasses of vino, Sekeres let his lips loosen a little too much!   Who called the Californian?  Sounds as if Sekeres is trying to cover his tracks and build a positive  public image for his 73 year old retired executive body!

Of course.  They have to investigate all threats made about the president.

How would they explain it to people if this man had been serious and acted on his threats while they sat on this information?

posted by honorerdieu on Oct 14, 2009 at 11:25 AM

Yes, considering the list of past presidents who have been assassinated and attempted assassinations that have been prevented.

Mr. Sekeres asked what kind of place we're living in.... where has he been in the last 10 years?

Well it is their job, no matter who is the president.... I am willing to bet that there are thousands of alledged threats for them to check out... from all over the world. I think they should keep it under wrapps though, and should use discretion when they are looking at people.  I also think the accusers should be fined if the allegd threat was a valid one.

This "Neocon" thought he was surrounded by like minded people at the Country Club. Thought he would make points and be amusing to his friends. Well it came back and bit you in the butt. Now amnesia has set in, how convenient. Not so funny anymore, is it?

Yes.

Is it a crime? Yes! Then we should investigate this guy!

I have sat in the local Country Clubs and this kind of hatred of our President is tolerated! I think it is ridiculous and shows how most of these "wealthy" people have no respect for this country (and no class)! The biggest joke is most of the anti-Obama hate speech comes from those who inherited their wealth and have never lifted a finger in their lives!

Investigate and prosecute all the CC members who threaten the office of the President of the US!

Mr. Sekeres called me out of the blue. That's how I learned of the story.

Of course I had to talk with the Secret Service to verify that it happened and to get their side of the issue.

One quote I got late, and didn't have the time to add it to the story, relates to Mr. Sekeres' feelings about the person who evidently reported what he said or didn't say.

"This is like Communism, a spy on every corner."

What may have bothered him most was that someone notified the Feds.

posted by AudreyB on Oct 14, 2009 at 01:25 PM

Oh!  so it's OK for him to threaten to kill the president but it isn't OK for someone to report him for it.

Just another example of skewed values.

I am a good person but I know some trouble makers.*Winks at witters because this story is about her brother.*

We were at a local parade where Reagan's daughter made an appearance. A friend thought it would be funny to yell "Shoot her" as she rode by. SS did not think it was so funny. Deservedly so.

Nothing makes me feel safer than knowing government resources were used to track down this threat to one man who is replacable.

Please. Is the President so darn important that you can't threaten him, but if you were to say that about me no crime was committed? Freedom of speech only applies unless you are talking about the president?

Is talking about wacking anyone good taste or in high class? No. However, I am not sure how the government is protecting the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of its citizens by spending millions of dollars a year to track down drunk old men who said something about the president.

It is called a police state. You do not have freedom of speech as obviously big brother is watching and big brother is willing to police your speech to make sure it is a little more appealing to the people in power.

So answer me this, if he had said if he was terminally ill and his first target was Rush Limbaugh, would all of you expect the police to investigage this and possibly prosecute this man? If your answer is no here, but yes to the president, you are a hypocrite. And not even so much because it is Obama, but because for some reason the life of some people is obviously more important than the lives of others here in America. I guess the elitist class is alive and well.

"Mr. Sekeres called me out of the blue. That's how I learned of the story."

He's obviously very proud of his accomplishment. Don't be surprised if this story goes national. Those whose names I dare not type will eat this up, and Mr. Sekeres will likely become a hero.

"One quote I got late, and didn't have the time to add it to the story, relates to Mr. Sekeres' feelings about the person who evidently reported what he said or didn't say...."This is like Communism, a spy on every corner."

Yes, those nasty Commies are always going out of their way to ensure the safety of America's president. If the responsible party wants to step forward, I'll have a #1 Communist trophy made for them (in red, of course) to proudly display in front of their spy friends.

posted by honorerdieu on Oct 14, 2009 at 02:23 PM

elrojo:  How was Mr. Sekeres' freedom of the speech suppressed?  If the man had said the same thing about another political figure in another country ruled by a communist, he would more likely be thrown in jail or executed.

There have been four presidents assassinated by the hands of American citizens.  Gee, I wonder why Secret Service take threats so seriously nowadays.

PC 701 doesn't apply as it has no penalty assigned to it.  It is mearly used by Law Enforcement to document a threats case.  PC422 doesn't apply as stated above.. However there are federal statutes applicable that go above and beyond PC 422.

Just an FYI, with PC422 you have to have a means and ability to carry out the threat suggested..

Instead of making idle threats he should have called him what he is.. an idiot, even a bigger one than ole Bush himself..   You guys keep hiding under the covers... he has put us in MORE debt QUICKER and FASTER than any other president in history...  His national security policy is severaly lacking.. How many times you guys going to stand by an idiot that keeps telling these Muslim countries who HATE us that were "sorry for what we have done"  I am sorry, im NOT SORRY...   bomb the crud out of them... keep terrorism out of our country.. Do you think with closing Guantanamo the terrorist are going to say .. oh it's ok America is great!!   Give me a break..  Read the releases the FULL releases on the waterboarding issues.. not the excerptes from CNN... They merely talked about making sure we DIDN"T step on the law.. if you listen to this idiot president and CNN.. you would think Bush broke the law.. well if he did, how come they haven't done anything?   In short this president and his policies are scarey.. WTF do we need czar's for?  czars are for SOCIALIST societies.. we are supposed to be a DEMOCRATIC society...   Keep hiding folks.. keep thinking this moron is going to get us by....  Next time were attacked and it WILL happen.. who you going to blame.. Bush?  HAHAHAHAHAHA.. we weren't attacked after 9/11... because we were the bully on the block.. now were just wimps!

Ok, the way I understand this is, this guy is out with friends, makes a comment during a conversation, someone gets butt-hurt over his comment & reports his comment to the feds. The feds getting this information have to go & check it out & after interviewing him say it is still under investigation. Is this right? If it is does the person who got butt-hurt over a comment that they were evesdropping on always go to extremes? Get a life, you are probably the one that peeks out your blinds all day to see what the neighbors are doing. Yes the feds have to check out all threats regardsless of how real they are, even that guy with the "abort Obama" sign on his vehicle got questioned. I personally don't like obama & wish he was out of office but the feds still have to do their jobs.

This article doesn't make the Secret Service that Obama has tied to his hip sound very competent. A 73 year old retired guy from Bakersfield is going to get close enough to the President anyway? The person that reported this must be skitty. This is way over the top in my opinion. I'm sure several people say the same thing about every President. I've never heard of the SS coming from Fresno to check it out. Another waste of taxpayer funds!

posted by vanityfair on Oct 14, 2009 at 07:25 PM

Ridiculous. Was the man's alleged comment in poor taste? Absolutely. If he had a history of violence and a criminal record, then perhaps an investigation would be warranted.

We've had this conversation before ... my opinion remains the same.

Agents in the Eastern Distrcit of California do very little with protecting the President.  They focus more on counterfeit money.  There is a lot of that going on with Law Enforcement- Peace Officer types as well as pimps and drug dealers in the valley.  Obama didn't fly some  agents into bakersfield to deal with a senile old man.

SS is in Bakersfield more than you think.  When they build that federal courthouse in town, they'll be there permanently.

posted by TSB on Oct 14, 2009 at 07:41 PM

I am guessing that the interview did not last long and once it appeared there was no real threat, the Secret Service moved on.   A multiple fatality attack in Washington D.C.at the Holocaust Memorial in June was carried out by an elderly man (I believe 88 years old).  Age is irrelevant and all threats should be checked out.

The comment about Communism is stupid.  Someone makes a threat in public about the President serious enough for someone to report, they deserve to be checked out.

Midterm2 and Kcsdd my reference to PC 422 was in response to Elrojo stating people could make a viable threat against him or any other average citizen without fear of being prosecuted. I was not refering to the threats against the president. I made many arrests under the section and leave it to a judge to make the determination if the suspect had the means to carry it out.

Jfrancais, according to an interview with Mr. Sekeres today, the Secret Service had already conducted an extremely thorough background check and pretty much knew just about everything there was to know without actually speaking with him. He was interviewed in the lobby of a local hospital as his wife was an admitted patient.

Mr. Sekeres indicated that he has a pretty good idea who the person is who reported his "threat."

Sorry, but I think not only is it a complete waste of time and money for the Feds to take it this far, it also is beyond chilling that someone can pick up the phone and really mess with someone's life.
