With little ammo against H1N1, officials aim at seasonal flu

With three deaths and 26 new cases of H1N1 flu documented just last week, Kern County health officials said Tuesday they are addressing the flu threat with an increased level of urgency.

Unfortunately, vaccines to guard against the H1N1 swine flu are not yet available in large numbers -- and no one is sure when they will be ready.

Instead, heath officials have elected to attack the other flu -- the seasonal flu -- as a way to guard against that virus, while helping to prepare for the potential onslaught of H1N1.

The Kern County Department of Public Health, Bakersfield College and Cal State Bakersfield will join forces next week to offer free drive-thru seasonal flu vaccines to thousands of area residents.

At a press conference held Tuesday at the health department, county health officials and the presidents of the two schools said the purpose of the Oct. 30 clinic is twofold.

The first is to provide as many as 3,460 seasonal flu vaccines to area residents in a quick, convenient and efficient manner.

The second is to help prepare health and safety professionals for a potential emergency scenario that could require the mass vaccination of a large population in a short period of time.

Will you elect to get a seasonal flu vaccination?

What about the H1N1 vaccination (when they become available)?

I hope the vast majority of conservatives follow Siouxcity's advice, and the rest of us follow the recommendations from health care experts.  Yes, the ones quoted in the media reports.

Medical people are finally admitting that those that have died had "underlying" illnesses as well. That tells me it was not strictly the pork flu. Of course anyone who has a low immunity already and gets something else, whether it is a cold, the flu, a hangnail, their deficient immune system, already overburdened, is not going to be as strong to fight the new invader. Many wait too long to get to the doctor and by the time they do there is nothing they can do.  Take the number of deaths across the whole of the USA, not just one small segment, and in actuality, there have been that many deaths and more in any given flu season. No I don't have actual numbers. I'm sick!!! with bronchitis and just don't feel like looking up the numbers.

Across the USA, how many people have been killed by drunk driver? Floods? starvation?

IMO - it is the old "sky is falling" syndrome.

Hi Smayer,

I'll be getting both flu vaccinations. I get my flu shot every year, and have been doing so for almost 20 years.

Losing a weeks work when self employed means losing a lot of money, and the flu isn't fun regardless. $ 20 for a flu shot is dirt cheap considering the alternative.

I've also been vaccinated for Polio, Smallpox, Diphtheria , Tetanus, ect.

I guess I'm that one in a million that didn't die from so many vaccinations : )

Be sure to have your lungs  CT scanned if you have had a severe case,a regular x-ray will not show any clots. That can cause a pulmonary embolism.

"With the upcoming annual influenza season in the United States, knowledge of the radiologic features of H1N1 is important, as well as the virus's potential complications. The majority of patients with H1N1 that undergo chest X-rays have normal radiographs. CT scans proved valuable in identifying those patients at risk of developing more serious complications as a possible result of the H1N1 virus."

I am following the advice of the W.H.O. and the C.D.C~ they have the up to date information, unlike some medical professionals.

Shame on you randomfactor. Although, I suppose we should not expect civil posts from someone as hateful and intolerant. Of course if you would care to explain your comments I might be more understanding.
