Shopping for a chemo hat
Well, it's begun.
I noticed an increase in beard droppings on my shirt on Monday and Tuesday. And on Tuesday night, I went to scratch my ear and my fingers came back with an alarming strand collection. Right now, my hair is just resting on my head, but if the wind picks up, I expect it to fly off. So, I can put up with the abdominal pains, the inconsistency of bowel movements, the can't get-out-of-bed tired, the headaches, the dizziness, the weird dreams, the heightened sense of smell, the dulling of tastebuds, the potpourri of medication and the weakening of my golf game (on Saturday I hit 3 more clubs than before chemo), but now we're talking about my Beatles-style hair that I'm pretty sure every woman on earth finds exceedingly attractive. When I went to my 25th high school reunion, I was so proud I had lots more hair than 90 percent of my classmates (all boys school). I have nothing against bald people. I just don't want to be one of them. I'm telling you right now, I'm gonna go out and buy a hat. I'd like one that says, "I'm not bald, just having a chemo setback." The hair will grow back. (It damn well better. If the doctors lied to me about that, I'm suing for emotional damages) All of this comes during the week when I felt like my old self again. I walked 9 holes on the golf course last night. I'm eating like a pig. Feeling good. Back to work. This coming Monday, I go back for more chemo. Lots of side effects to look forward to. And the new hat. 32 comments from 17 users

I told him that he will look just like Sean Connery..I really think he will. I think bald guys are sexy. I told him funny stories about how I coped when I lost my hair to chemo years ago. I even offered him my wig which I still have. But there was no consoling him last night. Sweetheart ,you are the sexyist man alive. Loosing some hair will not change that. OOXXXOOO me posted by

Now listen up here BTDT Go to Emporium downtown Big Mexican fellah there. If he's still there he'll set you up with a good Stetson for formal wear (white straw) I recommend the "Banducci" you would look good in that For informal, go to North Chester Army Navy store and get a crushable fedora. They are great. They always come back to orig shape you can get camo, regular brown olive, etc. good looking and you can roll em up and put under seat, in a pocket, etc. and they'lll ALWAYS look good! jist my 2cents posted by

This is a Resistol. Couldn't find the Banducci. You gotta put 'em on, but you'd look good in something like this here too.

Forget Sean Connery and Uncle Fester, Kevin Garnett is the look I'd go for. You'll be a big hit at the next highschool reunion! posted by

Steve, I think bald is beautiful! When a man goes bald - or chooses to shave their head - it's sexy, cool and distinguished! If a woman loses her hair to cancer (or just the genetic factor) we try to hide it with wigs. You remind me of a friend I had who battled lung cancer with tremendous grace and courage. She shaved her head when the first handful fell out and wore bandanas much of the time. (I recall she had teenage daughters who also shaved their heads to make it more like a conscious choice....I think this was a one time deal to help deal with the loss of many things....but, they did it and took some funny pictures along the way!) She had wigs that she had graciously been given by Link to Life, that made her feel feminine when she was out in public. Your hair will grow back! It may be a different texture (like baby fine or curly and course) but it will grow back! You may like the ease of taking care of your smooth head and keep the style after treatment ~ You never know! Think of the money you will save going to the hair stylist, shampoos, etc. (Maybe with that extra $$$ you can buy the Harley!) For the winter, buy some nice comfy sock hats to keep your head warm and enjoy the season and holidays with your wonderful wife Mary! Any other day you venture out without a hat - don't forget the sunscreen to go and some on your head, neck, face and ears! After beating this cancer, you don't want to see the skin guy with cancer from not wearing sunscreen after shaving your head! Your story is sure to encourage many who are dealing with this battle right now! Please continue to share your experiences - good and bad! Your humor and the way you deal with everything is awesome and inspiring! Enjoy the weekend of eating non-stop! Store up and replace as much as you can! I know you will be in many people's thoughts and prayers on Monday and the following week. posted by

My sister said she hoped hers would grow back thick and curly..alas she said, it grew back just like it was before..not a curl in sight. She's handy with a needle and made some caps to wear..clever gal. BTW..she's a 5 year cancer survivor. It's odd how it affects people in different ways. My Mom never lost her hair. posted by

Hang in there through all this, Steve! As of last month, I'm six months past my cancer diagnosis and surgery (breast cancer). Fight the good fight and start making more plans for the future. Janice Hagen Armstrong posted by
