We've Been Betrayed...
Last November we voted the Democrats in position because they promised us the reward of working in our interests. Slaps head...we could have had a V-8! I think the reality is that we really in the end knew this would happen. Oh...we didn't want it to...hoped it wouldn't...despite our honest efforts to prevent it. Our situation with the leadership that we have is just a pus filled sore waiting to split open and dump its contents onto an unsuspecting multitude of good honest folk. We actually believed our leaders and trusted them to do right by us...for one, they said that they would. I'm cynical just about all the time...and even I bought into it...because I desperately wanted someone to genuinely care. We've needed someone to care about 'we the people' for 6 years now and counting. I feel I've pathetically had unrealistic hopes of a better world, better America...better everything because I want it desperately for all of us. I'm not a selfish person...I'm willing to share the good times, the inevitable ups...the downs...the highs...the lows...it's second nature to us now...like breathing out and breathing in...we've grown accustomed to our life. (thank you My Fair Lady!) Yet we don't want out way of life at the expense of innocents dying in Iraq. I can no longer face the TV scenes when a car bomb has gone off and you hear the inevitable numbers of the tolling of the dead. With so much going on we have to pause to take it all in...in smaller proportions to even begin to make sense (if there's any to be had that is!) The bottom line ~ if the Democrats do not vote down the blank check Iraq War supplemental bill they are proposing, they will be complicit in the war, and should expect to feel the consequences in monumental proportions. If you vote for it...you now own it! Russ Feingold said in March..."The realization is growing that the only way to stop this thing is to use our power." But, power is not always used for good...and I know you've read that in some fairy tales in your childhood somewhere. Now here's a weird situation if I ever heard one. Some politicians are afraid to "take political ownership" of the war by using their power to end it. So, in the meantime as they focus on their particular brand of politics...while people are dying...it becomes clear that Feingold is right. "If the Democrats don't use their power, when we're in the majority in both houses, we're going to start owning this war." Russ Feingold who seems a man of integrity swimming in a pool of sharks also said, “It is George Bush’s war, but if we don’t get serious we’re going to start owning this war.” This is a critical point that many politicians are seemingly forgetting right now. The president may have started the war, and may own it politically, but he was also elected in 2004 just the same...or even in spite of it.
So this brings us to an uncomfortable realization about his being elected...he was elected on honest pretenses as pertaining to the war technically. The Democrats on the other hand...were put into office with a great deal of grassroots effort in 2006...drum roll...because they promised to end the war. So...by their betrayal (that's what it is to me) they've just turned around and become complicit in the very war they promised to stop...which by definition gives them a bigger chunk of ownership of the war than our Fearless Decider...because (and hang in here with me) they have broken their word to "us" and our country. Pure and simple.
A lot of people are bystanders walking way round this issue and say they do not have the ability to stop the war...which of course makes them innocent mostly in their own hearts and minds...but we know the truth about the shape of their spines. November was a heady time of joy and elation that lasted several days. We thought we'd gotten our country back and would soon get it moving toward a better understanding of what the American people wanted and needed. And some of what we wanted and needed was to get out of Iraq and leave those poor people and their families alone. They'd endured enough destruction and death to last a lifetime. And we knew we'd spend a lifetime making it up to them if given the chance. But...Nancy Pelosi said she would vote against the blank check bill...but she won't use her power to actually stop the bill from moving forward. Does that sound like a person with no power?
I've said this myself...and many lawmakers say it also...that the war is Bush's responsibility...not mine...not theirs...he must develop a plan to end the war. But it certainly doesn't mean our lawmakers don't have many ways at their disposal to force him to develop a plan. Through timelines tied to funding is a good example. If our Congress had the guts to brandish its Constitutional power of the purse strings and cut off funding by a certain date...it should force Bush and his so-called military commanders to furnish a much needed redeployment plan.

"More like invasion force..." In actuality, it is the other invasion force, the visible one.

in response to the comments about undocumented migrants... Migrants thats rich haha... More like invasion force... People who dont see the illegal aliens from Mexico coming in here and debasing our society are totally blind and out of touch with reality they take as much as they give. To be informed about the subject all you have to do is walk down the street, christ almighty. But I suppose everybody is too busy blogging to take a good hard look around and realize which direction we are headed in. Bush wants the illegals in here more than he wants Iraqi oil and all you socialist commies should be celebrating in the streets because you won the lottery you get more demo voters and Bushy is pulling out of Iraq. Bush will trade his war funding for what he thinks is right for America which is a permanent under class that can be easily manipulated by the new one party system and the race hustlers. Bush and company have to think about long term stock options, and slavery has always been good for business. posted by

Its people from all nations coming here, not just Mexico I looked this up earlier. Immigrants from Mexico make up just over 50% of the total number of illegals in the U.S. Mexicans are an easy scapegoat for the ignorant and the frightened. posted by

And yet they keep fleeing in here by the thousands. Quote Matt: We have given up our most basic Constitutional rights, our most basic human rights; of safety, of privacy, of justice. We used to be a beacon to the world, representing the highest aspirations of Man. America stood as a lighthouse on the shore, shining the light of Liberty and of Freedom to the storm-tossed seas of international politics. Matt is this about the Mexican Aliens or a comment about our horrible war in Iraq ? HEH HEH Your right about us losing our Rights, our Laws, our Privacy but it's from the Aliens coming from the South. Change a few names there Matt and it sounds like the invasion of America, if only we could get the Dem's and Rep's to think like that about our invasion here. Ron posted by

Many of us on these boards were happy back in November, because we saw the potential that this occupation would end, quickly. That members of our families, our friends, our fellow citizens might be home soon. That they might arrive alive, and in one piece; not missing limbs, not with horrible visions in their heads, and not in flag-draped coffins. We wanted this national nightmare and tragedy to be brought to its end. We wanted to end the bankruptcy of our future economy, and our national safety. Today, we got none of that. And for that, you cheer. This Administration has lied about the reasons for this invasion, lied about the planning, lied about the execution of the occupation, and lies to this day about its success, or complete and total lack thereof. Unlike many of you, I have read many book about this invasion and occupation. About the military planning, the military execution, and the military and civilian efforts afterwards. At each and every step this Administration has put partisan political considerations ahead of all others. Ahead of intelligence. Ahead of funding. Ahead of the safety of the troops. Ahead of the skills required to rebuild a country decimated by war and sanctions. Ahead of the political realities of the region, and of the country. Ahead of the economic realities. Ahead of the technical requirements. Ahead of each and every thing that was and is required to "win" this occupation. And for that, you are proud. This occupation has cost the lives of over 3400 American servicemen and -women. Numerous more lives of private contractors and civilian personnel. The lives of hundreds of thousands (perhaps as many as 650,000) Iraqi men, women, and children. Many million more are refugees, fleeing the chaos and death that we have brought and unleashed. There are tens of thousands of Americans who suffer the physical and mental scars of battle, and will bear them until the day they die. Families have been torn apart by this military action. Our national treasury has been ransacked by this Administration, and their cronies and corporations have been rewarded, handsomely. We will be paying for this mistake long after the last soldier comes home, both individually, and collectively. Our children will bear the brunt of this action, as their futures have been mortgaged to pay for this false "war". And for that, you brag. We have not been made safer by this Administration, by this invasion and occupation, by the passage of this bill. We are less safe today than we were on September 12th, 2001. It has been stated, for the record, by every expert in the field, that the risks to our national security have been increased by this continued occupation. They do not fight us there instead of fighting us here. They fight us wherever they choose to fight us, and they avoid us where they do not wish to fight us. We are not choosing the battlefield, they are. We are not decreasing their numbers, despite all of the killing. We are not decreasing their power, we are giving them credibility. We are not taking them down, we are building them up. They continue to grow, not despite our actions but because of our actions. And for that, you gloat. We as citizens have sacrificed, despite what you've been led to believe. We have given up our lives, and the lives of our fellow citizens, and the innocent lives in Iraq and around the world. We have lost our economic strength, our national character, and our moral high ground. We have given up our most basic Constitutional rights, our most basic human rights; of safety, of privacy, of justice. We used to be a beacon to the world, representing the highest aspirations of Man. America stood as a lighthouse on the shore, shining the light of Liberty and of Freedom to the storm-tossed seas of international politics. And we have fallen. Far. We not only condone torture, we perform it. We not only imprison people, we dehumanize them, like animals. We lie. We hide. We cheat and game every system designed to provide fairness and justice. We believe we are above the laws of man. We act as though we are gods, unanswerable to our fellow man, when we act on our lowest impulses. And for that, you feel righteous. You may find reason to celebrate today. I do not. I find it impossible to become happy at the idea that this will continue for one year more, for one month more, for one week, day, hour, minute, or second more than it should. People will die because of this bill. People will lose everything they hold dear because of this bill. And if your piggish brains cannot comprehend this result, then you are truly the subhuman animals you claim we are fighting. Their future should be your future. But even though it is not one of your qualities, I will do what I can to exercise restraint and compassion in my dealings with you. May your God help you if others do not. posted by

WASHINGTON — Bowing to President George W. Bush, the Democratic-controlled Congress grudgingly approved fresh billions for the Iraq war minus the troop withdrawal timeline that drew his earlier veto. "The Iraqi government needs to show real progress in return for America's continued support and sacrifice," the commander in chief said Thursday, before the votes in Congress, and he warned that August could prove to be a bloody month for U.S. troops in Baghdad's murderous neighborhoods. The Senate vote to send the legislation to the president was 80-14. Less than two hours earlier, the House of Representatives had cleared the measure, 280-142, with Republicans supplying the bulk of the support. Five months in power in Congress, Democrats in both houses coupled their concession to the president with pledges to challenge his policies anew. "This debate will go on," vowed Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada was more emphatic: "Senate Democrats will not stop our efforts to change the course of this war until either enough Republicans join with us to reject President Bush's failed policy or we get a new president," he said. posted by

Boxer's voting no, at least. I'm pretty sure Feinstein is a "yes." I'll never vote for a Republican in that race, but I sure as hell won't vote for her either. . OK, Congress has a long weekend to think over what idiocy they accomplished today. The fight starts again Tuesday. The enemy of this nation is ruthless, callous and vicious. But we'll defeat Bush in time anyway. posted by
