talkofthetown - > Talk of the Town -> Bush commutes Libby's sentence
Bush commutes Libby's sentence
Scooter skates.

President Bush commuted the prison term, but not the $250,000 fine, that former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby received in the CIA Leak case.

This will spare Libby  from a 21/2-year prison term that President Bush said was excessive.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

Sure you do.

Good to know people in high places.

Hardly news, we take care of our own, Libby ain't no poor black kid on the street, you know.  Jail is for criminals and Libby is no criminal, he just lies like the rest of us Republicans.

The Supreme Court, ruling in the Victor Rita case, said that 33 months was not considered excessive. Rita was convicted of the same crimes as Libby.

Bush has just proven he believes he is above the law.

It comes as no surprise the rightwingers are not bothered by Bush giving amnesty to Libby when they were so vocal against amnesty for illegal aliens who have otherwise not broken the law.

The rightwingers are such hypocrites.

+Grpthink, you can only use the word "Amnesty" when it applies to Mexicans getting a free pass in America: Breathing all of our good air and taking our good jobs.+

In bushs speech he said"His wife and small children have suffered"..huh? try that one in K.C. court..i wanna lie to a government agency and see what happens to me..not.

"His wife and small children have suffered"

What about the country, which lost an invaluable CIA front tracking nuclear materials in the Brewster-Jennings operation?

posted by randomfactor on Jul 2, 2007 at 03:57 PM

Political/legal decision.

.

By commuting, Bush pays off Libby for keeping his mouth shut.  By not pardoning, he keeps alive the appeals process convicted felon Libby can cite in refusing to testify before Congress.

.

Well, Bush *DID* say he'd "take care of" Libby.

posted by mattloch on Jul 2, 2007 at 03:59 PM
The great thing about this is that by commuting the sentence, he didn't have to abide by those pesky pardon guidelines. Libby would have had to show signs of regret and contrition. And we all know that wasn't going to happen.....

Why isn't impeachment on the table again?

/Bush signed the death warrants for 154 people while governor of Texas, including women, children, and retarded people
//what about Plame's husband and children?
///commute = "I know he's guilty, I just don't think he should be punished."

RKH:  "Lies like the rest of us Republicans... "  Thank you RKH for confirming what we already knew about you.

posted by mattloch on Jul 2, 2007 at 04:04 PM
Bonus points for Bush: because the sentence remains in place, Libby can continue to appeal the case through the legal system, and refuse to answer anything in Congress because it is an ongoing legal case.

Can anybody who voted twice for Dubbya, anyone at all, please explain this to me? I'm a little lost here...

If you voted for Dubbya twice, you should not be allowed to vote in any further elections.

Your stupid is diluting my vote.

Sorry, no, sagefever.  Abu Gonzales is third-rate.

First-rate people (tend to) hire first-rate people.

Second-rate people (George W. Bush) tend to hire third-rate people.

.

Abu isn't behind this.  Deadeye Dick is.

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Jul 2, 2007 at 04:47 PM
Besides being third rate, the guy seems about as far away from the "tough guy" image as humanely possible. Can anybody here actually imagine being afraid of him?
posted by randomfactor on Jul 2, 2007 at 04:49 PM
Well, put him next to Bradley Schlozman and he sounds positively Dirty-Harryish.

In the [Constitutional] convention George Mason argued that the President might use his pardoning power to "pardon crimes which were advised by himself" or, before indictment or conviction, "to stop inquiry and prevent detection." James Madison responded:

[I]f the President be connected, in any suspicious manner, with any person, and there be grounds [to] believe he will shelter him, the House of Representatives can impeach him; they can remove him if found guilty...

Madison went on to [say] contrary to his position in the Philadelphia convention, that the President could be suspended when suspected, and his powers would devolve on the Vice President, who could likewise be suspended until impeached and convicted, if he were also suspected.

Yeah  I am sorry you guys feel the need to contradict every freakin thing...I should have said somebody is smart ,it aint bush ,or me apparently, but my friends go to jail and bush's don't ..there rip that too..but it is just my opinion
posted by randomfactor on Jul 2, 2007 at 05:25 PM

Sagefever, there's nothing to contradict there.  Bush and his friends skate, and those without powerful "friends" serve time.

.

Keep in mind:  Paris Hilton on a parole violation served more time than Libby did for multiple federal felonies.

posted by NancyII on Jul 2, 2007 at 05:29 PM

I guess my stupid diluted your vote.  And, to your dismay, I WILL vote again and it won't be for your candidate.  Pfffttttt.

But, thanks for caring.

Sorry, no, sagefever.  Abu Gonzales is third-rate. That appears as if you wish to contradict what i said.wrong?I think Bush et all are crooks .just never seem to say it the right way for some folks...

posted by OldBlue56 on Jul 2, 2007 at 05:57 PM
Random, Paris Hilton did not serve a parole violation, she served a probation violation. Big difference.

BOO!!!!! That's what I think. "What If?" Bush hadn't done it? Would Libby have talked? Bush makes Nixon look like a saint. I am embarrassed for my country.

I only voted for him in 2000. In 2004, neither candidate was worth the space he took up. I left that part of the ballot blank.

SF..so you wish him DEAD?      And that makes you a better person how?

As for Bush being dumb?  I agree with Roy, very misguided.  Would I vote for him again?  Nope.

If Bush is dumb, how smart are Gore, Kerry, and the Democratic Party that got their butts handed to them in two elections?

Just curious.

That's right jfrancis; it was the Supreme Court who gave the election away. Hardly a "butt handing."

"If Bush is dumb, how smart are Gore, Kerry, and the Democratic Party that got their butts handed to them in two elections? "

The problem is that 1) they are smart, and 2) there are a lot of voters who don't like smart people.

Being highly intelligent has never been a popularity contest winner in this country (and some others), and it may never be.

Or we could blame it on the Nader voters in Florida, who were numerous enough to have tilted the outcome to Gore if they used their heads.

Time to bring them all in front of Congress, under oath, and ask them about everything.  And by the way, I don't think Bush is stupid.  It just looks like it if you think he's trying to act like an American or a Christian.

It is quite unfortunate when you consider many of us have selected this president twice to lead us in this world of numerous adversities. Even when he has made so many mistakes including iraq, cia leaks, Halliburton monopoly of middle east business, alberto gonzalez, bad supreme court nominee harriet myers, handling of Katrina aftermath, jack abramhoff scandal, immigration, restructuring of social security, medicare part D fiasco, handling of the secretary of defense Donald rumsfeld, out sourcing of jobs to india, and so on. Yet many of us can make a good case why we can stand by our president. I didn't call it a lie then i said to myself that our president was doing what he felt was right in that situation or it is was the left spinning it to make him look bad.  But what do you tell your children when the president gives a free pass to someone who has been convicted for breaking the law and sentenced to pay for his crime? What do you tell your children when they ask if they too can commit the same crime and have the same results? I really don't know and I am unable to make any more excuses for our president. All i can tell my child is i am sorry i voted for this president and am unsure if i will ever vote for this party ever again. I can turn on the radio and hear what rush, hannity, or even that little annoying woman in the mornings want me to believe and repeat to other conservatives. And maybe i will just accept their twist on the situation. But i know in my heart that this isn't right and it feels like an abuse of power, a power that i am ashamed to admit that i helped in giving him.

God help us all and forgive us for our sins.
