No charges filed against JonBenet Ramsey suspect
This probably doesn't come as any big shock — Colorado prosecutors declined to file any charges against John Mark Karr, citing a lack of evidence linking him to the killing of JonBenet Ramsey.
Tests showed the DNA of the 41-year-old Karr does not match the DNA found in the underwear of the 6-year-old victim. Amid skepticism over Karr's claims to have been with the former Little Miss Colorado when she died, legal experts said that it would be difficult to bring the case to trial without a DNA match.
Under Colorado law, formal charges usually must come within 72 hours of a defendant's initial court appearance. Reuters reported the DNA found on the little girl's underwear was identified as belonging to a white male but has never been matched to a suspect in the murder, which for 10 years has baffled police and fascinated Americans. JonBenet's parents, who were once said by authorities to be under an "umbrella of suspicion" in their daughter's death, were also excluded from having left the DNA. Her mother died of cancer in June this year. Other evidence at the crime scene included a foot print found near JonBenet's body in the basement of her home and a palm print on a nearby door. JonBenet's father, John Ramsey, found the girl's battered body in the basement on December 26, 1996, about seven hours after her mother stumbled on a bizarre letter claiming that she had been kidnapped and demanding $118,000 ransom. JonBenet had been strangled to death with a garrote made from cord and a paint brush found in her mother's paint supplies, her skull fractured and her mouth duct-taped. Forensic evidence suggests she had been sexually assaulted. Members of Karr's family, including his ex-wife, insist he was out of state at the time of JonBenet's murder and could not have been involved in the crime. Could two people have been involved? Karr writing the ransom note and someone else doing the kidnapping. A kind of "creeps of a feather flock together" scenario?

They are now investigating Tom Tancredo, they think he killed her when he mistook her for an iIlegal French Can Can dancer. Do you think it is possible he wrote the note? Nah, he just paid for the Champagne on the Thailand trip.

I didn't think he did it in the first place. He just doesn't look like a killer to me. The guy probably squeals when he sees a spider. posted by

Realizing by the end of January how the Boulder police had botched the investigation of little JonBenet, in February I wrote then Governor Romer pointing out the need in such cases not only for a thorough independent autopsy, but establishing proof of paternity as well. Neither was done which is why, among other reasons, despite requests to do so I refrained from commenting on Karr. posted by

Doubt it, Robb. I wonder whether JMK was in some legal trouble there. Confessing to a US crime you know they can't pin on you would be a whole lot nicer whan spending time in a Thai jail... posted by

I could be convinced to back it. I think my only conditions would be that all the DNA would enter the public domain stripped of any name etc. and not be subject to patent and that any corporation that tried to use the data for insurance purposes etc. would forfeit all of their assets and the corporate officers would be jailed and forfeit all personal assets. Also, the database would be held by the FBI as classified info. With the right controls and the right penalties, I'd support it. posted by

He has five misdemeanor charges here in Cali., does that mean he will be in jail for 1 year and then released? RF: You're right, I forgot about Tom Cruise. That can be milked for at least another 6 weeks. The major problem I see with the 24 hour "news" stations, including Fox, is that anything can and will be reported as "news" and the, get it on the air first, then worry about the relevance, is what drives stories like Cruise and this Benet thing. I bet there will be 3-4 more weeks, just talking about how the charges were dropped in Colorado. posted by

TomW, they will get my DNA when they pry it from my cold, dead, bloodstream. * . People who have "nothing to hide" also have nothing to fear from cops breaking down their door at midnight, without a warrant, to take them in for "questioning" indefinitely. Or from a government agency listening in on their phone conversations at random. . Parenthetically, and not directed at you--when did "conservatives" become so trusting of government's good intentions? posted by

In fact, MSNBC pre-empted a scheduled program that I wanted to record just to make room for an hour-long special on the case falling apart. posted by

And to people who have nothing to hide, when is your trash pickup, so that I can rummage through your old bills and junk-mail credit card offers -- that you were so kind to leave unshredded (since, after all, you have nothing to hide)? I am shocked, utterly shocked, at the sudden total, blind and complete trust of government that many conservatives have picked up somewhere. posted by

I think the forensic people made a mistake processing the DNA found on JonBenet. They should re-check it. I don't think Karr did it but that weird guy (I forget his name) who recently killed himself in Boulder may have. His DNA didn't match but the shoe print they found at the crime scene came from the same type of shoe they found in that guy's house. And according to the story, he was breaking into homes in that area and doing other weird stuff. posted by
