No charges filed against JonBenet Ramsey suspect
This probably doesn't come as any big shock — Colorado prosecutors declined to file any charges against John Mark Karr, citing a lack of evidence linking him to the killing of JonBenet Ramsey.

Tests showed the DNA of the 41-year-old Karr  does not match the DNA found in the underwear of the 6-year-old victim.

Amid skepticism over Karr's claims to have been with the former Little Miss Colorado when she died, legal experts said that it would be difficult to bring the case to trial without a DNA match.

Prosecutors have disclosed none of their evidence against Karr, who after his arrest in Thailand professed his love for child beauty queen JonBenet and said she died by "accident."

Under Colorado law, formal charges usually must come within 72 hours of a defendant's initial court appearance.

Reuters reported the DNA found on the little girl's underwear was identified as belonging to a white male but has never been matched to a suspect in the murder, which for 10 years has baffled police and fascinated Americans.

JonBenet's parents, who were once said by authorities to be under an "umbrella of suspicion" in their daughter's death, were also excluded from having left the DNA. Her mother died of cancer in June this year.

Other evidence at the crime scene included a foot print found near JonBenet's body in the basement of her home and a palm print on a nearby door.

JonBenet's father, John Ramsey, found the girl's battered body in the basement on December 26, 1996, about seven hours after her mother stumbled on a bizarre letter claiming that she had been kidnapped and demanding $118,000 ransom.

JonBenet had been strangled to death with a garrote made from cord and a paint brush found in her mother's paint supplies, her skull fractured and her mouth duct-taped. Forensic evidence suggests she had been sexually assaulted.

Members of Karr's family, including his ex-wife, insist he was out of state at the time of JonBenet's murder and could not have been involved in the crime.

What is your reaction to this news?

Quelle surprise.  Can the country get back the last two weeks of time wasted by the media now?

Could two people have been involved?  Karr writing the ransom note and someone else doing the kidnapping.  A kind of "creeps of a feather flock together" scenario?

Maybe now the 24 hour media can get back to the Iraq war.

They are now investigating Tom Tancredo, they think he killed her when he mistook her for  an iIlegal French Can Can dancer. Do you think it is possible he wrote the note? Nah, he just paid for the Champagne on the Thailand trip.

Shirley you jest, Gr8scott.  You forget the *MONUMENTAL* Tom Cruise story.

Doubt it.  This guy was a lone nutjob.  The reason that police keep some crimescene details secret is because they get so many false confessions.  Moving on to the next rape/murder of a pretty white girl. . .

Hey, but he got a nice expensive flight back to the US and had champagne and prawns on the trip. I'm so glad that the news covered this story and got every single little detail. I was just dying to find out what he ate for dinner. Oh, will CNN be covering what he eats tonight or are they not following him around anymore?

I didn't think he did it in the first place. He just doesn't look like a killer to me. The guy probably squeals when he sees a spider.

Realizing by the end of January how the Boulder police had botched the investigation of little JonBenet, in February I wrote then Governor Romer pointing out the need in such cases not only for a thorough independent autopsy, but establishing proof of paternity as well. Neither was done which is why, among other reasons, despite requests to do so I refrained from commenting on Karr.

Proof of paternity.....what the hell????

In case the Dad wasn't the father, which would change a whole lot of motive equations.

So does Thailand get him back?

When did that ever come up?  Why would her non biological dad kill her?
posted by randomfactor on Aug 28, 2006 at 03:55 PM

Doubt it, Robb.  I wonder whether JMK was in some legal trouble there.  Confessing to a US crime you know they can't pin on you would be a whole lot nicer whan spending time in a Thai jail...

posted by robbwillis on Aug 28, 2006 at 04:04 PM
I figured that was his motivation to confess. Why not put him back in the Thai jail?
posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 28, 2006 at 04:05 PM
I think that's why he confessed. Look how nicely he was treated on the way "home." I'm suprised he didn't get a pedicure with his champagne.

If he goes back he will have to fly ecomony class or maybe freight unless he confesesses to something else.

Anon: I was just guessing as to Sam's line of thought with the paternity thing.  It would shed light on the Ramseys relationship.
posted by TomW on Aug 28, 2006 at 09:59 PM

I could be convinced to back it.  I think my only conditions would be that all the DNA would enter the public domain stripped of any name etc. and not be subject to patent and that any corporation that tried to use the data for insurance purposes etc. would forfeit all of their assets and the corporate officers would be jailed and forfeit all personal assets.  Also, the database would be held by the FBI as classified info.

With the right controls and the right penalties, I'd support it.

Didn't they have the DNA goods on OJ?

Does anyone know why he was actually arrested in Thailand? Was it at the request of the Colorado authorities?

He has five misdemeanor charges here in Cali., does that mean he will be in jail for 1 year and then released?

RF: You're right, I forgot about Tom Cruise. That can be milked for at least another 6 weeks.
The major problem I see with the  24 hour "news" stations, including Fox, is that anything can and will be reported as "news" and the, get it on the air first, then worry about the relevance, is what drives stories like Cruise and this Benet thing. I bet there will be 3-4 more weeks, just talking about how the charges were dropped in Colorado.

Warren Jeffs Steed was arrested this morning in Vegas, he is being take to Colorado by limo as the next suspect.

TomW, they will get my DNA when they pry it from my cold, dead, bloodstream. *

.

People who have "nothing to hide" also have nothing to fear from cops breaking down their door at midnight, without a warrant, to take them in for "questioning" indefinitely.   Or from a government agency listening in on their phone conversations at random.

.

Parenthetically, and not directed at you--when did "conservatives" become so trusting of government's good intentions?

.
*It would actually be much easier than that for me--in fact, I'm already on file.  But I don't want them getting any ideas...

No, Random, the media are not about to get back to important matters.

In fact, MSNBC pre-empted a scheduled program that I wanted to record just to make room for an hour-long special on the case falling apart.

And to people who have nothing to hide, when is your trash pickup, so that I can rummage through your old bills and junk-mail credit card offers -- that you were so kind to leave unshredded (since, after all, you have nothing to hide)?
.

I am shocked, utterly shocked, at the sudden total, blind and complete trust of government that many conservatives have picked up somewhere.
.
The "I have nothing to hide" argument is only valid if a society's laws are 100% just and the enforcement, application, and prosecution of those laws is likewise 100% just.  As of the date of this writing, I know of no such society.

Yeah, I looked at CNN a little while ago and they were scheduling an hour-long piece tonight.
.
But don't they play nicely while the deck tilts?  Wonder if they know "Nearer My God to Thee"?

Maybe Karr was the one that kidnapped Natalie Halloway. I bet they could get him to confess to that one too. I feel really bad for the 24hour news programs. What in the world are they going to talk about now? I'm sure some pretty blond girl will go missing or be involved in something horrible really soon.

RF, will it really take an hour to admit they blew this thing way out of proportion?

I think the forensic people made a mistake processing the DNA found on JonBenet. They should re-check it. I don't think Karr did it but that weird guy (I forget his name) who recently killed himself in Boulder may have. His DNA didn't match but the shoe print they found at the crime scene came from the same type of shoe they found in that guy's house. And according to the story, he was breaking into homes in that area and doing other weird stuff.

Pete, why on earth would they admit to being wrong?  When have the media *EVER* admitted to being wrong?  Especially the FAux "Where the white women at?" News Network.
