No stopping gay marriage, yet

Conservatives and religious groups weren't able to stop California's path to gay marriage, yet.

Read the story here.

So come June 17, gays can get married in California.

However, an initiative that would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage has qualified for November ballot and if California voters pass it gay marriages would become illegal again.

What happens then? Does that June 17 (or whenever) marriage certificate become invalid?

USA Today has an interesting story today about changing views on the subject according to its most recent poll. Read it here.

I don't understand why anyone would care if gay marriages are legal.  Does it have any impact on your life if some one else does something that makes them happy?  Your religion may not approve of gay marriages, but your religion is not the same as everyone else's.  Any beliefs based on faith should not even be considered when law comes into the equation, everyone is supposed to have the freedom of religion here and that means, even as upsetting as it is to some of you, they have the freedom to have a religion different than yours.

That will be up to the California Supreme Court. Until then, gays and lesbians can stroll down the aisle wearing lavender bow ties w/matching cummerbunds while far-right loonies protest outside with third-rate photocopies of Jesus and misspelled signs. Fun!

A quote from wblood:

they have the freedom to have a religion different than yours.

Yes they do blood      their religion could be marry a pig   marry their daughter    marry their mother   their dad   their brother  sister

If their religion says they have the right to kill all blacks   or christians    or women       or what ever does that make it right ?

There are certain things that cannot be without religion    man on man and call it marriage    same with women     do what you want in your rooms      but don't call it marriage

Ron

Again Morals     you know what morals are        morals established this country lack of Morals will destroy this country

Isn't it strange how all the weirdest conceivable forms of "marriage" are all suggested by those *OPPOSING* same-sex unions?

.

Makes you wonder if the whole anti-same-sex-marriage thing isn't about keeping *THEM* from obeying their deep inner urges to marry their father's sister's brother's pig...

RF~ *giggles* I have often wondered the same and find the "slippery slope" argument funny.I mean animals can not sign their "names' to any document...

posted by randomfactor on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:35 PM

The place to stop a "slippery slope" is at the top.  No marriage allowed for anyone stops all their screwy fantasies.

sage, Mr. Ed used to write all the time with a pen held in his mouth...

Did you know "Mr. Ed" was really a zebra?  It says so at Snopes.

Funny Randumb and Sage   40 years ago people would have laughed or beat the hell out of such talk   GAY MARRIGE

Yes Morals and Times have changed      thats why we know this country is on that slippery slope Sage

Ron, Did McBush commit a sin by cheating on his spouse?

posted by randomfactor on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:42 PM

So ban marriage, and no more problem, Ron.  Fair to everyone.

But ewe never know.

*hits self in head* I forgot all about Mr.Ed...thanks OB...but he is the lone exception I believe, and I have this conspiracy theory that it was all faked anyway by the government!

Ron~ I just do not think humans will marry out of species~ we are far to bigoted for that!

posted by randomfactor on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Is there any harm in letting Mr. Ed marry?  Wasn't he a gelding?

posted by sagefever on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:55 PM

RF~ I think that gets into necrophilia and that is just plain wrong!

posted by randomfactor on Jun 4, 2008 at 12:56 PM

I dunno, some folks arrayed against same-sex marriage are into equine necrophilia and sadism as well.

But I think they're just beating a dead horse.

Groans but that is pretty quick RF>good one.

JBS, don't know about the spelling but if their genes become dominate it could put some gardners out of business.

Home schooling is banned, but gay marriage isn't.  One is harmful to society, but not the other.  People who home school their children are scrutinized for their motives, gays who marry are offered best wishes and congratulations.  You wonder why some of us are worried.  Soon it will be illegal for us to worship freely.  Wasn't that the reason people came here in the beginning?

spam code:  DS WHY?  (my maiden name began with S)

answer:  I don't know.  I just don't know.

I was into necrophelia for a short time in 1983. Thank goodness she moved back to Minnesota...

posted by sagefever on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:18 PM

I will fight the good fight for home schooling,DG~ as long as the kids can pass the same tests, there should be no problem with that.In fact in cases like my sons homeschooling was the best, and something i was setting up before he died. As to freedom of worship~ count me in on that one too!.

posted by Maggiepoo on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:19 PM

Pretty soon they will make gay necrophelia home schooling against the law, better start reading the ballot issues before voting

posted by randomfactor on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:19 PM

And before anyone asks, it's because *THEY DON'T TALK.*

.

Home schooling isn't banned, dg.

If everyone who wanted to get married were scrutinized for their motives, it would stop a whole lot of bad marriages.  Wouldn't you support that?

.

All you have to agree to is to treat everyone fairly.  If gays can't marry, nobody can.  If anyone's not allowed to worship, nobody is.

.

I think Jesus had some sort of Rule about that.

posted by johnburnssucks on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:29 PM

dg, it depends on what is involved in the term "worship freely." You can't just do whatever you choose and expect to be protected under the umbrella of "worship." Any set of beliefs that places a supreme being over scientific knowledge deserves to be labeled as harmful.

The Pilgrims came here for "religious freedom" after being run out of the Netherlands after leaving England. This religious freedom was limited to those who practiced Puritanism; any who disagreed were banished, which is how the colony of Rhode Island came into being. These bigoted "Christians" were the poster children for the suppression of the enlightened mind.

posted by randomfactor on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:39 PM

Come time to vote, all those who are married will vote NO.  As will I.

.

And if the bigotry initiative passes this time, we'll remove it in a few years.  The main opposition to same-sex marriage is dying off.  Their grandchildren will approve.

.

It may not matter anyway.  The Supreme Court set the bar pretty high--to remove the right to same-sex marriage, you pretty much have to gut the equal protection clause of the Constitution.

posted by TomW on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:48 PM

I don't get the this whole thing either.  There's a polygymous sect in the news right now that has stated that they will follow the law and only allow marriage to girls over the age of 14.  That's right, 14.  Of course, you need parental consent.....

posted by allRED on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:48 PM

Random on a Constitutiual amendment  the voters will have the say sorry buddy  and yes someday after we are gone the people will pass it      and may God forgive them when that happens

Ron

Ron, I'll live to see it overturned, if it even passes this time.

.

And if it passes, it may not overturn the decision.  We'll have to see.

Murph, San Francisco is in California. Zelda Gilroy heads the California State Senate. "Gay Mart" is on the corner of Sixth and University in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. You can buy lavender sweaters at the mall. California is already known as a gay state.

I'd like to take those South Dakota geniuses who wanted to challenge Roe v. Wade but couldn't even get an abortion ban passed in their own state and put them on an island. Cruise ships could sail by as part of the "circus sideshow" segment of the voyage.

posted by TomW on Jun 4, 2008 at 01:56 PM

RF, no way this thing will pass this year.  It's already polling below 50% and they're going to be up against the millions of Obama supporters who are already going to be at the voting booth this fall.  The might have passed it in an off year, but this year, they'll lose all their excuses to keep their boy-on-the-side on the side.

JBS, I loved that bill.  Republicans tried to get Democrats to water it down and they didn't take the bait.

America is great and just keeps getting better.

Tom, this has already been a crazy year.   I'm going to fight that bill like we're ten points down.  But I do believe you're right.

History is on our side, as is gerontology.  The trick will be to get the California Obamaniacs *TO* the polls in a state he should win in a walk.  That's what I'll be working towards.

I'll be right there with you, RF.

posted by johnburnssucks on Jun 4, 2008 at 03:24 PM

Murph, they can all live wherever they want, even right next door to you, and you can't do anything about it.

There will be a new gay bar - the Bako Booty - opening soon, and former Pentecostal minister "Lavender" Larry McGeraghty will give the benediction at the grand opening, which will be followed by a Rooty Tooty Fresh-n-Fruity parade down California Ave. Bringing up the rear of the parade will be a Christian-themed float, with 13 naked gay men portraying Jeethus and hith twelve apothles.

Before long, Bakersfield will be the most liberal city in the entire valley.

"Lo-la, La-la-la-la Lo-la..."

You are assuming all "Obamaniacs" will vote for gay marriage. What happens when you assume? We know african-americans will vote heavily for Obama, probably in a record turnout and we also know that most african-americans are against gay marriage.

Amazing Murphy how many fruits have come out of hiding    I hope they all get married and then in Nov   they are all known  and then the firing begans @ work     the closet buddies the   I'll pick up the soap buddy   Gays will be exposed    maybe then they can join Tom W in Frisco a so called christian that go's agaisnt God and His Word about Gay's

Murph, I scored 134 on an IQ test. I have brains to spare. Everyone outside of San Francisco doesn't think like you do; I used to, until I was exposed to the sack of dog s**t known as the Christian Evangelical, and suddenly those who wear lavender underwear and swing from trapezes didn't seem so bad. Gays make up only 2% of the population, so there must be millions of non-gays in areas statewide who support the gay person's right to live as he or she chooses, along with the option of bending over the Evangelical and shoving an axe handle right up his...

" morals established this country lack of Morals will destroy this country"

Actually, morals had nothing to do with the establishment of this country.  If anything, our founding fathers did everything they could to make sure that the citizens had as much freedom as possible without creating anarchy.

This country was founded upon the principles of freedom and ethics, not morality.  Morality is defined by the individual and is personal in nature.

The only 2 events that are new to humanity would be the gas shortage and the use of nuclear and other devestating weapons.

I'd say you're overreacting..
