Grocery trip horror stories

We put out a local poll every day asking for readers to vote on a wide variety of (usually) newsworthy topics.

This afternoon's poll (it changes at 4 p.m. daily) asks which grocery item you think has gone up the most in recent months.

Personally, I've been amazed at the price of granola bars. Others in the newsroom have mentioned bread, beer and cherries, among others.

At Young's Market on Brundage last night they were selling french bread loaves at 2 for $5. Not that long ago they were 99 cents.

Mission Tortillas, burrito size, 14 of them cost $4.14 at Vons. CRAZY. But it would cost too much to drive to Costco for a better deal.

At this rate it won't be long before Olive Oil will be cheaper than Corn Oil.

7 Grain bread will be cheaper than corn tortillas .  (maybe already is according to Bakos pricing.)

I wanted some tortillas the other day and passed when I saw the price.  I'll make Bun Tacos since I can still get hamberger buns for 99 cents a pack.

Ooops..no tomatoes on them though.

And very good bread at some of them.  Damn this Atkins!

Eggs where I live are outrageous, usually about $3.59 doz.  RF I've done the Atkins nearly year around since 1974.  It becomes part of life to not even notice the high carb. stuff.

Eggs at Longs run about 1.79 a dozen and milk is usually cheaper there than anywhere (except maybe Winco) if you're only buying it buy the gallon.  Remember some of us are single and couldn't use two gallons of milk in 6 months.  I stopped using much of it in spite of loving it soooo much.  It doesn't work well with my system.

I usually buy bread at the bread outlet where I also get that fantastic South Eastern Mills gravy mix.

99 cent store has Shasta sodas 4/79 cents.  They used to have eggs 99 cents a half dozen but have been out the last couple of times I was there.

When not on sale, it now costs almost as much for 5lb of Gold Medal flour as it would to get 5lb of Bob's Red Mill flour (e.g. the fancy stuff). Even the store brand flour is getting rather expensive. Luckily, I still have a couple bags in the freezer from the Christmas sales (stocked up then anticipating this increase). Sugar is also getting pretty high. Add to that the increase in eggs and oil as others have already pointed out and my baking has decreased to a minimum of late.
