Lasting benefits of 'magic mushrooms'

Scientists reported Tuesday that when they surveyed volunteers 14 months after they took 'magic mushrooms,' most said they were still feeling and behaving better because of the experience.

One volunteer felt like her heart was ripping open, but she still described the 'trip' as a joyful experience.

Check out the study and the story here.

Ecstasy too has lots of valid uses in psychotherapy...but it's not patentable, so it's unlikely to be approved anytime soon.

Wow man...Psilocybin  has been used in religious ceremonies for centuries.

Shamans have been using drugs for ages that would be or are illegal here.  If you want magic mushrooms legalized, get a Pentecostal church behind it.  In this country, the identity of the endorser matters more than the actual drug.

More happy pills.  People turning to chemicals to cope with life.  Yeah..that's a good thing huh?

Except for little things like this from the article.

"Experts emphasize that people should not try psilocybin on their own because it could be harmful. Even in the controlled setting of the laboratory, nearly a third of participants felt significant fear under the effects of the drug. Without proper supervision, someone could be harmed, researchers said."

How many people will read that article and decide now it's ok.    People are warned to stay out of the river too.

JebusSmokedaBowl, is that why Pentecostals speak in tongues? *sarcasm*.

posted by johnburnssucks on Jul 1, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Pentecostals are wacky far beyond anything that 'shrooms could do to them. The infamous John Burns would say the same jibberish every time he "spoke in tongues" (they rehearse that crap in private), and one of the words he came up with was "shamalama", to which my buddy Frank Suljic and I would look at each other and say, "ding dong!" (apologies to Lloyd Williams)

You know, shamans weren't sitting around doing drugs every day, only during specific religious rituals. I get kind of sick of certain people trying to say it's okay to use something recreationally because it's used by a certain culture as part of their religious ceremonies. What's next, saying it's okay to be an alcoholic because some churches have communion wine?

Shwaine..Great point !

Schwaine, how about banning *ALL* use of wine because *SOME* are alcoholics?  Does that make more sense?   Or banning cannabis because, well, just because?

.

*IF* some abuse ecstacy, does that mean psychiatrists shouldn't be able to use it?  Same with psilocybin.

Not too bad, nearly 75% of the bloggers here live in a constant state of fear

Poo, it's so sad that you live in a constant state of fear. You should seek professional help.

that's like this thing i watched on dateline one time about perscription ecstacy.  this man was drying from cancer and had totally shut himself off from his wife, so their therapist gave them the disco biscuits and they hashed everything out and he talked about his fear of drying and told his wife how much he would miss her and how he loved her and how he appreciated everything she'd done for him and vice versa and they got closure on the situation.  i believe he died not to long after that experiment but i found that interesting in correlation to this story,

Nation Buys Porn With Stimulus Package

President Bush's economic stimulus package, which appears so far to have been ineffective in stroking the economy to life, is giving an unexpected raise to the porn industry.

From an Adult Internet Market Research Company press release:

An independent market-research firm, AIMRCo (Adult Internet Market Research Company), has discovered that many websites focused on adult or erotic material have experienced an upswing in sales in the recent weeks since checks have appeared in millions of Americans' mailboxes across the country.

According to Kirk Mishkin, Head Research Consultant for AIMRCo, "Many of the sites we surveyed have reported 20-30% growth in membership rates since mid-May when the checks were first sent out, and typically the summer is a slow period for this market."

Drugs & alcohol were my brothers undoing, including magic mushrooms. Jan 2, 1987, he did a swan dive off the Padre.

THE END

Maggie- maybe people are staying home and watching porn because it's too expensive to drive anymore....gets pretty boring staying at home.

I stay away from ALL mushrooms for fear it will trigger a flashback from my wild teenage years. I only "shroomed" once, but it was awful.

witter, did you brother land in the alley on the north side of the Padre?

posted by witterpitters on Jul 2, 2008 at 02:38 PM

Yes he did OB.  Were you one of the responders?

posted by OldBlue56 on Jul 2, 2008 at 03:04 PM

Yes witter, I think I was there. It was definitely in 1987, and there are not many suicides off the Padre. The incident I am thinking about happened in the afternoon. It was a young man and he went out onto a fire escape up near the top floor and jumped off. Very sad.

OB:

I guess there must have been more then my brother then. He went off the 4th floor in the AM of Jan 2nd. He had spent the night at my house and when I got up at 7am he was gone and I just knew he was going to do something. About 10am the police were at my moms door but they wouldn't tell her anything until I got there. Drugs & alcohol.

posted by OldBlue56 on Jul 2, 2008 at 05:26 PM

It must be a different incident witter. But it's still sad.
