Leading Catholic: Disney has corrupted kids

Ahh, Disney. Good, clean, wholesome entertainment for all the family.

Little ones learn right from wrong. Good always triumphs over evil. If Disney ruled the world it would be be called Disneytopia.

So it was something of a shock to hear the following from one of Britain's most prominent Catholic clerics, Christopher Jamison:

"The message behind every movie and book, behind every theme park and T-shirt is that our children's world needs Disney," he says.

"So they absolutely must go to see the next Disney movie, which we'll also want to give them on DVD as a birthday present.

"They will be happier if they live the full Disney experience; and thousands of families around the world buy into this deeper message as they flock to Disneyland."

He continues: "This is the new pilgrimage that children desire, a rite of passage into the meaning of life according to Disney.

"Where once morality and meaning were available as part of our free cultural inheritance, now corporations sell them to us as products."

Fr Jamison, who is one of Britain's most prominent Catholic clerics, claims that brands such as Disney market themselves to be about more than mere materialism to create an addiction to consumption.

"This is basically the commercial exploitation of spirituality," he says, adding that as a result Disney and other corporations "inhabit our imagination".

For the full extent of the cleric's withering criticism, go here.

Read fairy tales, read fairy tales, read fairy tales. -- Albert Einstein, when asked how to raise a brighter child.

The message behind Disney is imagination. Call it pablum or commercializing or corporate greed, their product is entertaining children and generally carries a basic moral message.

Perhaps the kiddies would be better off if they flocked to Christopher Jamison and got a dose of a snake talking to a naked couple. And don't forget to pay the tithe.

They could go to a mosque and learn the moslem precepts of mudering helpless people. Now there's a "free cultural inheritence" passing on "morality and meaning." And don't forget to donate.

After reviewing the historical consequences of organized religion, I'd feel better if children flocked to Disney. Certainly would be more fun.

"Where once morality and meaning were available as part of our free cultural inheritance, now corporations sell them to us as products."

A result of the growth of America's official state religion, consumerism.

Not that I'm advocating Disney.  Their work tends to blend and homogenize entertainment to eliminate the rough edges.

If you want to raise brighter kids, Einstein could have said it simpler:  Read, read, read to your kids.

Disney is just  giant corporation, doing what giant corporations do, promoting their products to their targeted audience. Disney is no more the villain than McDonald's, Target, WalMart, Burger King, General Electric, Viacom, Warner Brothers, Fox, Proctor & Gamble, General Mills, Monsanto, BASF, Chevron, or any other conglomerate you want to name who drives their businesses with nonstop marketing efforts. I'm not sure why Disney is the singled out target from this cleric.

Meh--He's just jealous because Disney has a better marketing strategy than the Catholic Church--by about a 1,000 percent!  What kid wants to go to a dim, quiet church when they can go to a bright, noisy theme park?  None that I know of--and that goes for a lot of adults, too.

Well, growing up in Disney country (Orlando), I do think that some people are a bit obssesed with the company.  I never really understood the families that purchased season tickets and went to the parks every other weekend - that's a bit much IMO.

However, I don't see how Disney corrupts children any more than anything else in our modern society..

I was one of *those* kids, went to the happiest place on earth once a summer, had fun, read the fairy tales, watched the movies, sat riveted to the Musketeers and lived to tell the tale~ circa 1950ish and upwards. I still love the Storybook land boat/ride thing and Tom Sawyers island...even though the kids look at me weirdly while I explore the "caves".lol

Went each Sunday to church too, also lived through that experience.I still love choir, some books of the Bible and the message of Jesus.

Grew up to be a below average worshiper of consumer goods~ go figure.

I'll be heading to worship at Dizzyland next month.   Still wish the collection plate didn't take so big a bite, though. :)

I suppose this guy thinks that all those dirty little pedophile priests and the church that covered up for them is better for today's kids than Disney movies.

Kids get way too much reality these days;  let'em have fun and dream while they can, for Pete's sake.

I read a book a while back called Sin and Censorship. It was about how the church viewed the movies and Hollywood.

Star Wars received a brief mention in it. The church was not pleased that the evil Empire (and by default the Sith) was being equated by people with the church's strict teachings and its take no prisoners attitude towards sin.

"Only the Sith deal in absolutes." The same could be said about the church.

I'd love to hear this guy's view on Harry Potter...I'd probably bust a gut.
