It's been 5 long, frustrating years (for the owner) since the Exotic Kitty first pawed at the city's doors, but Bakersfield's third strip club finally opened Monday on North Sillect Avenue.
Meow.
Judging from the story and map in the paper and online, it's basically a surgically enhanced strip pole's distance from the Teaser Pleaser, which opened in 2006.
And of course there's that hot-pink bastion of adult entertainment, Deja Vu, about two sweaty miles away on Golden State Avenue.
So...
Ain't my word, group.
You know....swish.
It comes from a Washington Post story by Laura Session Stepp (those women can get away with everything) about what is manly nowadays.
The story begins with the lacy wrist band on the Johnny Depp character, Capt. John Sparrow, in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Some, myself included, don't associate lacy wrist bands with the concept of manliness.
But the good captain said it's really a trophy from a woman. Well, in...
Is Crabtree being punished for reports that tell "the truth" about the local real estate economy? For trying to blow the whistle on alleged fraud? If Crabtree's business is suffering for speaking to the media, should we worry that it will be harder to get an accurate picture of the local economy?

What will they think of next to lure you to a Los Angeles Dodgers game?
Their latest is all-you-can-eat Dodger Dogs (or nachos, popcorn, peanuts, soft drinks and bottled water) for an extra $27 (advance) or $32 (game day) on your $8 ticket price in the right field bleachers. (some days might actually be cheaper)
Fans are loving this and are now sitting in these cheap seats in order to take advantage of this gastronomic delight.
Well, at prices of $4.75 for a Dodger Dog and the same...
Are these default notices a hiccup? Normal for an investor who might own a number of properties? Or do they signal real financial problems? What do you think?

The House approved legislation that would outlaw gasoline price gouging.
The White House threatened to veto the bill and some lawmakers such as Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, said it was vague. "I don't know what unconscionably excessive means."
Well, Joe, maybe I can help you out with that.
Each retailer pays a certain amount for gas. I think lawmakers should pick out a percentage range above that to allow for reasonable and even unreasonable profits.
Anything above that is...
If there's an industry that provokes mistrust and anger on a regular basis, it's insurance companies.
They take over our lives in so many ways and they pounce on policy holders for having the audacity to make a claim.
The latest fray is their attempt to make homeowners in wild fire zones take over-the-top precautions to keep their homes insured.
First of all, I have no problems with reasonable precautions such as clearing brush on property a homeowner controls. I'd side with an...
Students have begun using "mosquito ring tones" on their cell phones in classrooms because adult teachers can't hear them.
This, of course, violates school policies against having cell phones turned on during classroom hours.
Students can receive text messages this way or send pictures or just chat.
I'm in favor of teachers confiscating cell phone and returning them to the parents of the students.
If the same student re-offends, I'm in favor of putting the phone in the...
Many lawyers are very good people, but Daniel Patrick Willsey — the attorney who reportedly was under the influence of methamphetamine when he crossed over the road and struck a patrol vehicle driven by sheriff's Deputy Joe Hudnall — isn't one of them.
Willsey has filed a $5 million claim against Kern County alleging the accident was Hudnall's fault. Willsey's brother, Steven Willsey, is seeking $7,200 for his "security interest" in the BMW Daniel Willsey was driving...
To the parents of 12-year-old Jacob Saecker, who reportedly has autism, a German Shepherd service dog named Thor is a godsend.
Mother Kristi Saecker said the two work very well together and her son has dramatically improved her son's ability to concentrate and stay calm.
But just as Mary couldn't bring her lamb to school, Thorner School officials won't let the highly trained Thor in the classroom with Jacob.
The reasons aren't real clear. Bakersfield City School District spokesman...
The latest study shows that more than 25 percent of young adults use only a cell phone, not a home-based land line.
A federal study said, "One in four people aged 18 to 24 had only cell phones, as did 29 percent of those aged 25 to 29, the study showed. The percentages declined with age after that, with 2 percent of those 65 or over having only cell phones."
I'm not sure I have a good reason to have a land line phone. I never use it for long-distance calls. We get very few...
Now here's an interesting topic.
It assumes on one level that you haven't already bought your kid a car for his or her 16th birthday.
It assumes on another level that you will buy your kid a car at all.
But it is the subject of a San Antonio Express-News story about how to select a car as a graduation gift.
The story deals with how to go about finding the right car.
That's not what this blog is about. It's about whether you buy your kid a car in the first place.
And...
A McFarland woman was killed when a stray bullet hit her while she slept with two of her kids. Here's an incredible blurb from the reporter in the field this morning:
While canvassing the neighborhood, sheriff’s deputies knocked on the victim’s door — not knowing someone was hurt inside — and an 8-year-old girl opened up, said a sergeant in the McFarland substation.
A deputy asked if he could talk to the girl’s mother and the girl said her mom was asleep,...
The results are in from the Zagat/Today Show fast food survey and Wendy's wins for top food, top facilities and top overall. Subway gets the nod for best service.
There are separate categories for stuff like best fries, best shakes and even best mascot.
There is no category for "produced the most fat people."
Check out the results at the Zagat site.

Associated Press writer Samantha Young has written a story about climate changes that may reduce the snow pack in the Sierra and send precious water out to sea.
The story is of particular importance to Kern County and the rest of the San Joaquin Valley which still abounds in rich farmland.
Water from the mountains comes to the farms via the California Aqueduct and the Friant-Kern Canal, but because of a dry year, supplies will be cut sharply this year.
Over the long term, experts are...
My answer is so far, yes.
Clemson University just did a study on the 5-second rule and whether it's advisable within five seconds to pick up food that's been dropped and eat it.
The New York Times did a column on it.
I've done this all my life. I'm clumsy and sometimes that strikes when I'm eating.
I drop. I pick up. I brush off. I'm still alive.
I don't have a university study to back me up on this. Just my experience.
Sometimes my food lands on surfaces or substances which...
A racy billboard that shows scantily clad chests of a man and a woman was taken down in Chicago after people complained about the slogan, "Life is short, get a divorce."
It wasn't the slogan or the cleavage, it was the lack of permit that axed the billboard.
But let's wallow in the bigger issue — should lawyers be allowed to prey on the disenchanted married couples to encourage a divorce at hundreds of dollars an hour?
And the answer is, it won't matter. Couples ready...
I am encouraged that major business leaders including the CEO of Safeway are encouraging a system of universal health care.
It takes it out of the realm of left-wing nuts.
But as a union representative here, I have studied the issue and the conclusion is that as long as so many people are uninsured — and thus get health care through taxpayers at emergency rooms such as Kern Medical Center — the health care costs will not be brought into check.
Oh, there are other problems...
A lot of people don't like Paris Hilton.
I'm not one of them. I admire her for turning nothing but a lot of money into celebrity status. Besides that, I think she's hysterical in The Simple Life.
Her life became more complicated after she violated her probation for an alcohol-involved reckless driving conviction by driving her car on a suspended license.
The judge sentenced her to 45 days in jail. Her attorney appealed, presumably on better legal grounds than her calling the term...
President Bush is likely to veto a bill that would expand hate crime laws to gender and sexual orientation.
Hate crime laws currently encompass violence against individuals based on race, religion, color, or national origin.
The White House has said current laws are adequate to cover violence based on other factors.
Proponents of the law say the federal expansion is needed to plug holes in some sate laws.
The law would make it easier for federal authorities to involve themselves...
Lord knows, I don't want to "rush to judgment" about whether Los Angles police were justified in clubbing and shooting 240 nonlethal rounds into immigration demonstrators on Tuesday.
Reports say the police got aggressive after people threw rocks and bottles at them. We'll see what the hundreds of hours of video show.
But what I do know is the cop who kicked the Telemundo cameraman and threw his camera on the ground was just way out of line. At a minimum, the police need to...
One of our staff members at the paper went to buy a bucket of chicken from KFC. He was going to use his debit card until he was told there would be a $1.50 fee for doing so.
He left the store without the chicken and complained whatever happened to the cashless society.
Other places charge a couple dimes to a couple bucks for using debit cards such as gas stations and other restaurants. Some charge unless you buy a certain amount.
Doing a little research shows that some gas...
A medical marijuana dispensary called Nature's Medicinal Cooperative at 323 Roberts Lane was raided Tuesday, stopping several customers from trying to fill their marijuana recommendations.
(you can't get a prescription, but a doctor can recommend that you need marijuana)
David Chavez Jr., the son of the dispensary owner, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a small amount of cocaine.
In addition to seizing 50 pounds of marijuana and $50,000 in cash, local and federal officers also...
President Bush vetoed a Democratic war spending bill that would have required American troops to begin leaving in October and try to be all out in March next year.
Bush called the deadline irresponsible, saying all that terrorists would have to do is mark their calenders to step up their operations after the Americans leave. He said it was a recipe for failure.
Democrats said the war has been a failure and Americans want to troops home. The bill was sent to the president on the...
A local senior citizen apartment complex apparently told some residents that could not fly American flags outside their units.
And boy did this set off a fuss. Residents were outraged and the complex has reversed itself. The owner is even coming to talk to residents, to calm the fury.
Now I actually have a flag hanging outside my apartment and have had one for the past several years. But if my landlord told me to take it down, I'm not sure I would freak out.
What do you all think?...
In retrospect, a procedure that relied on applicants for emergency medical technicians to tell the truth about whether they had a criminal background seems stupid.
Criminals lie.
And a few lied in order to get an EMT job — including an identity thief and a registered sex offender — through the lax Kern County system.
A revised set of rules will be presented this month to the Kern County Board of Supervisors.
It's expected to comply with every other...
Several controversies emerged in the protest a year ago of A Day Without an Immigrant.
One was drywall business owner Jeff Burns who fired 21 employees who skipped work to join the protest. He said he'd do it again because "If you're in America and you want to work, come to work."
Another was Julio Cesar Avendano, an ice cream cart salesman, who was kicked out of Beach Park for working at a crowd that was trying to establish immigrant power by not working. Avendano' son...
