I grew up in Westchester. OK, ok... I was north of 24th Street up in Riviera Westchester. But I had an apartment on 21st Street before I moved to Oleander. So, why have I never heard of this annual July 4th tradition they have down in my old neighborhood? I guess the handbills didn't go out to the apartment dwellers. Or maybe 21st and D Street was too far east.

     Anyway, my friends who live down there invited me to the big extravaganza yesterday. Wow. Every year the people of Old Westchester get up early on Independence Day and spiffy up their bikes and mule carts for a patriotic parade around the neighborhood. How fun! When I parked at the intersection of 20th and A Streets, some of the neighbors were already celebrating the day in their front yard with mimosas and assorted goodies.

     There was only time for me to scarf down a banana before we walked down to 20th and Pine for the beginning of the procession. There I witnessed every variety of pedestrian, dog breed and conveyance on wheels for the annual event. I have never seen such a collection of cool and crazy get-ups for any other small neighborhood event. These people really know how to party. They went all out with the streamers, ribbons, flags and music to show their patriotism on this day.

     Even the dogs were all dressed up in their best red, white and blue. And they were all getting along. I didn't see one little scuffle or snarl between the lot of them. There was a chorus of barking at the firing of the Linfesty canon. Wherever it was (I couldn't see over the crowds) it's boom sent a ripple of excitement through the whole crowd.

     After we all completed the course and had proudly displayed our colors, we enjoyed a lovely brunch outside. What a beautiful morning. How nice of my friends to include me on this very special day.
