Agencys to Keep DeGeneres' Dog
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ellen DeGeneres' doggy drama intensified Tuesday after her tearful plea on her talk show led to death threats against the rescue group that took back her adopted dog for violating the contract, according to a spokesman for the agency's owners. DeGeneres explained on her show that the Brussels Griffon terrier mix didn't get along with her cats, so she gave it to her hairstylist's family. The owners of Mutts and Moms claimed that DeGeneres violated the adoption agreement by not informing them that she was giving the dog away and removed Iggy from the hairstylist's home Sunday. As a result of the publicity, Marina Batkis and Vanessa Chekroun received voice mail and e-mail threats of death and arson and were besieged by the media, disrupting business at Paws Boutique store in Pasadena, where they handle the volunteer, nonprofit rescue agency, attorney Keith A. Fink said. Batkis rejected DeGeneres' plea to give the dog back to her hairstylist's family. "She (Batkis) doesn't think this is the type of family that should have the dog," said Fink, who is not legally representing the owners but is authorized to speak for them. "She is adamant that she is not going to be bullied around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the world ... They are using their power, position and wealth to try to get what it is they want." DeGeneres' attorney, Kevin Yorn, did not immediately return a message seeking comment. "It's very upsetting to hear that someone is getting those kind of calls," DeGeneres' publicist Kelly Bush said. "Ellen just wants the dog reunited with the family." On her talk show taped Tuesday and airing Wednesday, a serious DeGeneres reiterated to her audience that "the dog needs to go to the family." It "just needs to be in a good home," she continued, according to a transcript given to The Associated Press. "All that you're supposed to do is put a dog in a loving home." DeGeneres had said her hairdresser's daughters, ages 11 and 12, had bonded with Iggy and were heartbroken when the dog was taken away. Fink said Moms and Mutts has a rule that families with children under 14 are not allowed to adopt small dogs. "It's for the protection of the dog," he said. 11 comments from 10 users

Moms and Mutts has a rule that families with children under 14 are not allowed to adopt small dogs. Okay, this agency is just dumb. I can buy into the rule that you notify an agency if you can't keep the dog you adopted. But then I would expect the agency to look at a home and see if it's a good home. Ellen's hairdresser has all the markings of a good home and the 11- and 12-year old children bonded with the dog. Moms and Mutts are nuts. They are on the lunatic fringe of dog lovers. And they are not going to let powerful Ellen, one of the most loved women in America, push them around. I know where they can stick their pride.

the la times do NOT have a blog (at least that I could find) to post our opinion. I have emailed them (mutts and moms), but I am sure they are swamped in email, phone calls and such. So if anyone wants to put their two pennies in, here ya go: Mutts and Moms Paw Boutique 523 S Raymond Avenue Pasadena, CA 91105 626.394.0946 Email: pawboutique@yahoo.com http://www.muttsandmoms.org posted by

I have two small dogs a mini doxie, which when we first got her she was so small! and our most recent puppy is a mini chiwawa, tiny, tiny. At 8 weeks he is only 4 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches long! My seven year old daughter is so sweet and gentle to our dogs that she even asks me or my husband to carry the puppy down the stairs for her. I think these mutts and moms people are crazy and need to give kids more credit! I think they are seriously going to regret this whole thing. They are even getting death threats! If you look up their web site the pages are gone. At least that's what I've found. posted by

Ellen adopted the dog, how can it not legally be considered her property? She apparently had the authority to take it to the vet and to training, but not to give it away? "Mom's and Mutts" needs to change their name to "Mom's of children over 14 years of age and Mutts"... there's also another name I'm thinking of, but it might get confused with a female dog. posted by

I was trying to be objective when I first heard Ellen's plea... I thought maybe the agency had had some justified reason for pulling the dog from the family. But, then I heard that the pulled the pup because of the age of the kids. WTH? What kind of completely arbitrary bull is the over 14 rule? I've known some really irresponsible 16 year olds and some incredibly responsible 9 year olds. Why didn't this pet agency actually CHECK OUT the family? Seems that their goal really isn't to get abandoned pets to good homes, but to make money. And, after she PAID for the dog, wouldn't it be HER property? If Ellen was responsible for feeding, sheltering, and vet bills... then, Ellen should get to say what happens to the dog. Since when is the Pet Shop vested with more authority than a foster care system for humans? posted by

When she signed an agreement? . Remember Senator Bill Frist, who "adopted" kittens and then dissected them? The rules aren't there to stop the *GOOD* people, although they do affect the good people sometimes.
