Hopefully he'll find himself in the company of the Dixie Chicks.  What a cowardly thing to do!  It's pieces of @#$% like that who give hunters a bad name.  May he suffer the same fate as the bear!

If true, he should and hopefully be vilified. People should show their disaproval with their pocketbooks just like the Dixie Chicks have had done to them albeit for different reasons.

adampayne, I'm assuming that you think hunters want to eliminate wildlife? Where would you get that idea?
Maybe "your" instincts are to "wipe out all species", but no hunter I know of feels this way. Actually just the opposite is true. There is a major difference between hunter and killer.

the dixie chicks were right lol. there were no WMDs and the case was completely falsified. are you still so naive as to not see that? even Colin Powell has admitted it. why pick on them now that history has validated them?

Never said that the D.C.s were right or wrong. But I do know that the American people have voted against them with the dollar. It's what should happen to this guy if the allegations prove true. People should show their displeasure with this activity by stopping his money supply. This blog is not about WMDs or the Dixie Chicks. It's about, if proved to be true, morally and ethically irresponsible behavior that should not be condoned.

The comment was that hopefully Gentry will find himself in the company of the Dixie Chicks.  Meaning that I hope the fans or former fans will show their disapproval in the same way the Dixie Chicks former fans showed theirs.  That is the right of the consumer.

ahh, sorry to misinterpret that. yeah, I totally agree with you and hope his fans realize what they are supporting.

Oh my mistake, I thought we were talking about hunters. Not poachers. Poachers can and do decimate herds of animals, usually for monetary gain. You understand that meat hunting has been outlawed for around 100 years? Hunters are not wiping out species. Hunters and poachers are two different issues. Wholesale slaughter in this country was stopped a long long time ago. Sad to say but the same cannot be said for Africa, South America and other places were this practice continues. In this country species that are hunted are actually thriving. White tailed deer are actually taking over places in the west that historically they have never been. They are actually threatening native species such as mule deer and black tail do to competition for browse. Elk populations are at an all time high in many states, so much so that they to are threatening the health of mule deer herds. Wild pig and wild turkey numbers are at an all time high in places that they have not been in years. Here in this state mountain lion numbers are nearing historic numbers and they are decimating our deer herds because the population goes unchecked. If you don't believe me contact any biologist that works on California deer populations as I have. Grizzly bears are doing fine in the historic ranges they are found. The exception to this would be California, where they were over hunted before the turn of the century. Actually the cause of the decline of the CA. bears can also be attributed to the use of strychnine to eradicate them as they were looked upon as a nuisance, not just hunting.
Cheneyized, that's a cute word. I guess you mean that someone neglegently shoots at something he is not meaning to and only wounds it and not kill it, yes? Because that's what Cheney did, did he not?
And don't lump hunters in with people that do canned hunts. No hunter that I have ever met, and that's a bunch, would ever do such a thing. As I stated before there is a major diferance between hunter and killer. If the allegations about Gentry are true then he would be in the second catagory and should not ever be labled a hunter.

You GO Glocker!  Very well said!  You argue these points so much better than I.  I commend you.

Going solely on what I read about this yahoo...he bought a tame black bear, basically put it in a pen and shot it while the cameras captured the occasion.   The reason?  To look macho for an album cover?  To appear the great white hunter for the ladies?  Whatever the reason was..it was sick and it was NOT hunting.

Adam, you are more than welcome.

I have information somewhere on the cat status in Ca. I’ll find it if I can and post it for you to read. It may surprise you.

Please remember in some of those states that you mention there are other circumstances that help or hinder many species. Winter die off in some states take a heavy toll on wild animals. Other places have on and off drought problems. This affects tender browse for the young and without it survival rates drop. Here in Ca. we battle not only Mother Nature and her tricks, but also politicians for the well being of our animals and habitat. Most of the jobs in places that manage our resources are political appointees. Some with no experience in the departments they oversee.  There is also disease that comes and goes such as blue tongue that can kill entire herds in a matter of months. All of this has been going on since the beginning of time and will continue until the end. So it’s more than hunting that effects wildlife.

I firmly believe that we are the stewards of this land. I also believe that we all, hunters and non-hunters alike could do a much better job if we could remove about 95% of the political crap that exists out of the way and let biologists and common sense give it a shot for a change.
