TMZ has learned that 2006 Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime, adding prescription pills were found near his body.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays The Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

According to NYPD a masseuse arrived at Ledger's apartment and was let in by a housekeeper. When Ledger didn't answer his bedroom door, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened it and found him unconscious. They attempted to wake him; when they couldn't, they called 911.

We're told when paramedics responded, the actor was in full cardiac arrest. They attempted to perform CPR on him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ledger is best known for his groundbreaking role as Ennis in "Brokeback Mountain."

An old cowboy sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. As he sat sipping his drink, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life, breaking colts, working cows, going to rodeos, fixing fences, pulling calves, bailing hay, doctoring calves, cleaning my barn, fixing flats, working on tractors, and feeding my dogs, so I guess I am a cowboy."

She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. When I watch TV, I think about women. I even think about women when I eat. It seems that everything makes me think of women."

The two sat sipping in silence.

Brokeback Mountain was difficult to watch because of the subject matter. HOWEVER, it did open my eyes to the problems that gay men encountered in 1950 and today. I guess that's what good writing and acting does.

Heath Ledger was a good actor and I've seen most of his movies. Even that (Mel Gibson) piece of crap "Patriots".

The way to early speculation as to the cause of his death should give us all pause~so eager to add another name to death by drugs. However he passed, the film world has lost a good actor and a daughter her father.

Funny, the investigators still do not know the cause of death. That hasn't stopped the worst in the media from sensationalizing about rolled bills and capped pills. There certainly are a lot of homophobes here in this little universe. Although for the life of me, I don't understand why people misconstrue an actor's performance with what he does in real life. Heath Ledger's memory, for those afflicted with Ned Beatty disease, will be forever stamped for one performance. It is stunning to see in print the continued prejudice and hatred focused on such a large segment of the population who walk and work among us everyday and contribute mightily to bettering society.

Why was she called instead of 911? Why did she send her personal security team to the apartment instead of calling 911? Did her security guys take anything from the crime scene and leave with it? I haven't heard if they were there when the police arrived. If not, they should be charged with leaving the scene of a crime or accident or something? The rolled up $20 bill had no trace of drugs on it. Did Olsen's men take away her $20? Was she at the scene earlier? There are a million unanswered questions to me.

Ned Beatty? One of the finest character actors around so I don't see the Ned Beatty syndrome thing here. Like Suzanne..he was never really a star in spite of Deleverance, but he never sopped working. My hat goes off to those who help make the "star" look good.

I'm curious. In the overall grand scheme of things exactly what impact does his death have in this world?

Is his death any more significant than say anyone else in today's Obit page?

I don't think so. Ten years from now, (other than family mambers and a small cult of fans) no one will have a clue who Heath Ledger was and the world will have changed little for his life or death.

Again I am left to wonder what's the big deal and why anyone should give a rat's hiney?

I recently did a blog on Norse Mythology~ a group of "stories" all about their equivalent of stardom, rolled up $20 bills and untimely deaths. As a culture they used these tales to see themselves, record history and ultimately used the Eddas to study their societies structure, identify a critical flaw and change it.Not just with Erick the Reds death...but the whole history. (great bit about finding American, the first European baby born here by the way).To my mind some read the Enquirer~others see more, perhaps beyond a signal persons death.

In the grand scheme of thing none of us matter one wit. But when I told my story here on b.com,of my personal losses,I heard back from more than one who had learned something from my tale. That is the most we can hope for.

As I stated ,I am not so callous as to not give pause for all who have passed. I hear the "Bucket List" is a 50/50 ,so I am waiting for the DVD~though Freeman and Nicholson are good actors.

What impact...

To Curt:

What impact did Ledger's death have on anything? Probably no more than the death of any body else. But, he was in the public eye so we hear about it. Who else died on the same day as Abraham Lincoln or James Dean or Elvis? Lot's of people we will never hear about either. In ten or twenty years no one will remember the details, but for now, it's fresh in our minds and there ARE a lot of strange circumstances connected with this death that I am curious about.

Yes. Miami CSI is even dumber than Vegas was (at lest the Vegas dude is not quite as pretentious as the Italian redbrain) but the best one is NY with Gary Senise. I have like Gary since Forrest Gump and Lt Dan and he was great in Kidnapped. He does a lot for the troopers too.

Feb 5, 2008 at 03:02 PM : Chic,
I get a kick...

Chic,

I get a kick out of how they try to show the places these TV make believe CSI teams work. The Las Vegas people always have glowing neon colors reflecting on them. The Miami place looks like they stole the set from some futuristic star trek movie and everything is always lit in yellow and hot looking. In the NYC one it looks like they are working in a subway tunnel and everything is cold and wet and covered in white tiles. Being a New Yorker myself, I know we DO have SOME clean, modern places here. I'm surprised they don't show rats scurrying in the background to try and make it look "realistic."
