Unless you're burinin Bullseye or some other real fast burning powder though Murph, that little 2 inch bbl won't allow the gases to expand fully and completely burn the powder therefrom so you are losing the real effectiveness of the 357 vs.just the 38 with that short bbl. Wouldn't even recommend Unique.

Just somethin ta keep in mind when reloadin fer that little hand cannon!

It (any Ruger IMHO) is a great gun! The Hunter's model now (with the integral Weaver type base with rings incl) in SS and 7 1/2" bbl is really good. Walnut grips, its a really beautiful pistol for hunting, plinking, target, etc.

Rugers are hard to beat and one of their best has always been the Marks I, II, II, etc. semi-auto. Of course the first one I had was a single six with the interchangeable cyclinder so you can shoot 22 mags too. Had a coyote laughing at me once as I was about 75 yards or so off and was hittin all around him with the regular LR's. I got PO'd, pulled out the other cylinder, put it in with some mags (he was still laughing) and put one in his boiler room and he jumped up and I put another right behind it. He didn't laugh anymore! Its a fine little gun too! The new Hunter's Model in that has the integral weaver style base on it too and comes with Ruger's really good rings.

I might be wrong about the new Hunters Model in the semi-but I'm pretty sure it has the Weaver base built into bbl like the Single Six (new model). You cannot go wrong with the Mark III though!

Another good little 22 auto is the Barretta Neos. Looks like a pellet gun but they will quit laughing at you when you start shooting the eyes outa the target with it. And it is totally modular (IOW you can put on longer bbl, different grips, even a little carbine stock and really longer bbl. And it is accurate. I've put about 20 bricks of Wally World $9.50 per 550 ammo through it (either Federal or Remington Peters) and it has jammed like one time! Look at it. Its only about $250 for base model with 5 1/2" bbl! Ruger will run you around $400!

This is Mark III 22/45 model. It is less money than the one I was talking about but is designed on the egronomics of the 1911 which is not a bad thing any day! You can get one cheaper than the Hunter's model I was talking about but it is built a little cheaper too (of course). Its a good gun too. I'd really look at the Barretta Neos too though.......

This is Mark III Hunter Model I was talking about. It is a really fine gun but will run you around $400. Go to www.gunbroker.com and do search for ones up for bid. You will have to pay FFL DROS and sometimes handling fee but you can find FFL on the site that is close by too. CA will require you to take handgun test (written and physical handling) but FFL can give that to you in a few minutes when gun arrives. You can't go wrong with it!

This is one I was talking about with integral Weaver type base built in and extra mag cylinder. I don't have the Mark III Hunter model (above) so I was wrong about the weaver type base I guess. I have a Leupold Scope on mine and it helps me a lot to have a scope. Its a great gun too and I got a brand new one on gunbroker for right under $400 so it was a great deal! Very accurate and its really two guns! Love it!

However, to a gun guy you could be talking a myriad of weapons so you should be specific if you mean Colt Model 1911 which can be any of a numer of "series".

For example a Colt SAA (single action army) chambered in 45 LC is often regerred to as a Colt 45 as well as the venerable old 1911. Either one are a great choice!

Know what scares the living hell out of me?? A real ticked off WOMAN with a Gun and hear I bought the Wife a 32 semi auto Beretta.

I dated two women who had .38s; one kept hers on the nightstand (she was a reserve cop), and the other in her bookcase headboard. If you didn't perform well, they shot you full of holes (not really).

Barrett .50 calibers are cool, but I prefer one of those guns on the end of the garden hose for cooling off an irate woman.

I have a few good guns but my all time favorite was a very old Benjamen air rifle with a brass pump. .22 cal. and very accurate. I think my brother ended up with it. We wouldn't just shoot birds as kids we would shoot at different parts of their heads, that's how good that rifle was. Sounds a little sadistic doesn't it. My mothers only shot with a weapon was with that pump and she knocked the head off of a woodpecker that was killing our pine tree and waking us up every morning. That was in 1962-63.

I continue to enjoy my Bushmaster AR15. Lots of fun for varmints / target practice and just a good utility gun. Of course for the man who likes to accessorize it has plenty of options. My next purchase is a .450 upper receiver for large game hunting. That being said , I hope to one day be able to afford the Barrett .50. The Idea of being able to reach out and touch your target past a half mile just adds some enjoyment to the sport.

When it comes to pistols I don't have a real preference for brands but more for calibers. .45 Auto's are my favorite just for the stopping power. There are a lot of good pistols out there to choose from and you just have to find the right form and function.

The Springfield M1A 7.62mm is my favorite rifle. Ammo is easy to get, relatively cheap and it is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. My favorite auto loader is my Beretta 9 mm with the 15 mag. Again the most accurate hand gun I have ever owned. I agree about the Ruger 22 cal. Ruger has never made an inferior gun. They are all great shooters.

Gonna p*** off some GOB's here (good ol boys) but I gotta say it.

I love guns, espcially western guns (six guns,.lever actions, coach guns,black powder, etc.).. But when it comes to high magazine capacity assault type wepons (I know that is a whole nuther area as to just what is an "assault" weapon), I just don't see the real need. For military or law enforcement? Rock on! Any thing they come up with -- they should have! Muscle or CNS disruptors, ray guns, lasers, tasers, whatever. Lethal or LTL, whatever....... whatever works......

But for us Billy Bobs, us guys who's pray is not packin and the most dangerous thing we're gonna face is the odd wounded wild hog, why do we need the semi-auto high mag cap 223's or 308's, etc. Even the Barrett's etc. (50 BMG's) that reach out a mile or so. or even the 338 Lapua's etc. that are just about as effective. But at least the 50 cals that are popular now are mostly bolt actions, not like the quad 50's we had in nam. Its just that I often wonder, where the hell ya gonna shoot em safely? When they reach out that far with that much KE, how can you be sure whats out there? Hell, I worry sometimes whats beyond a few hundred yards when I shoot and I rarely shoot a critter that far anyway. I have a hard enough time @ football field distance! But they don't bother me as much as the rock & roll high capacity autos.......

Anymore, about the only rapid fire weapons I have (rapid being defined by the definer) are pumps, lever actions, or mebbe a semi like a Browning, but most of mine are Ruger #1's, NEF's, or Thomsons which are single shots. Cowboy shootin I'll use an old pump shotgun (if not double bbl'd coach gun or a lever action or revolver, but as far as multiple shot capability thats about it! I've never hunted with anyone using an AR or similar. Do those guys really hunt much? If not, what is the attraction? I don't get it.

If yer LE or Mil, OK. I get it. But if yer not? Someone please 'splain it to me lucy............

(seems ta me the more rapid fire high cap weaponry out there, the more idiots will get their mitts on em ta use in a school, Luby's, or elsewhere ta take out a bunch a peeps. Then the gun grabbers will whole hog come after those of use with our little low capacity sportin type weaponry and....there ya are...... open for rebuttal and a sh**storm now......... reckon I'll be called everything but a cowboy.[or American]......)

I love the above gun, just like Roy, but I'll acede to the People's Republic's 10 round cap on this feller (even less mebbe, and allow its use for huntin, etc. The 308 is one a the best rounds ever and the gun......hell, my first rifle as a Springfield 03A3 in 30-06! Bolt action.......... accurate as heck.

I used to shoot in college, but don't anymore. Favorite gun I ever used was a SAR-1. Easy to control, great at 50 yards. I like Mossbergs in a shotgun and haven't used many pistols. If I got a gun for home defense, it would definately be a Mossberg pump action. Nothing says "Get Out" like the "shuck shuck" of a pump action shotgun.

Tom, nothing better for home defense than a shotgun (IMO) with like about #4 or a little bigger but not 00 buck, and one thing about the 870 or other pumps is you have that last "line to cross" warning for the thug, the sound of jackin a round in chamber. I have a double bbl'd coach gun for cowboy shootin and that'll get their attn when they see it aimed at their center mass but that sound is missing == and God knows I don't want to have to shoot somebody!

Ron, its worth around twice that now. I got the new hunter model for $400 on internet but they' run anywhere from $450 to $500 easy now. But its like two guns in one and the 22 mag is as effective a round for coyotes on down as the little 22 LR is cheap for everything up ta coyote! A great little gun.

I like the looks a blued steel, but I'm a throw it ina truck kinda guy and SS works good for me as you don't have ta worry about rust, etc.

No allred, you cannot carry a loaded gun in your vehicle, or concealed, whether loaded or not, without a CCW permit. It's okay to take a pistol out to shoot or be repaired, but no ammo can be anywhere in the same area of the gun. That applies to the streets and public. Out on your own ranch is another thing.

Now days it is pretty difficult, in the city anyway. You have to justify why you need one, and then undergo a background check. But even then it is difficult. Not sure about the county, but I am sure it's similar.

I would hate to give you some wrong advice. Do an internet search on the calif penal code and read the various sections under 12025 and 12031. That should answer your questions.

Absolutely everything OB said is correct. That is why I have lockable gun cases for rigs I carry in vehicles. Keeps everything together (except ammo which is in disparate location (but available to me if I'm out on rancho).

Bought a gun at Jewel Box (of Miranda Rights fame) in Phoenix, AZ one time and proprietor asked me if I wanted to wear it out on street (I thought he was kiddin....... back in late 60's) he wasn't...... I said no--it was an old single six with a bullet belt gunslinger type holster and all. I thought the guy was takin the Mickey out on me.

But CA, CCW allows you to carry concealed. Not aboard aircraft, in other states, etc. Technically it is good for County or origin only. I think down there permits are easier to get in County than City (County has around 4.000 which is more than any other County in CA BTW) but as OB said you have to under go background check even if its just cursory 1029 (wants & warrants) mebbe a 10-27 CA DL check, LAR, etc.

I tell the kids (truck drivers, welders, etc.) keep yer coyote gun in behind seat rack and out here a Deputy probably won't give ya too much gas but be sure its not loaded and I would even remove bolt. At least have it open or if lever racked open, etc. Cops don't like surprises. This way they can see its unloaded without even looking. That's just my additional "quirk" BTW. . IF stopped I would immediately tell officer or deputy "I have a rifle behind seat, its unloaded, ammo is locked in glove box, not immediately available, etc." Be upfront.though with em....ALWAYS!

Also, I'd hate to be that guy who tried to shoot an intruder and shot a kid asleep in the house across the street. In a regular house, your max range is gonna be 40 feet in a hallway, well inside the range of a shotgun.

Of course, out on the ranch you don't have the down range issues.

#2 shot or so, you won't have ta worry too much in town about collateral damage. I don't think most people realize, though, just how devastating it can be to have ta actually shoot someone. Even cleanin up afterward is somethin to ponder. I always pray the bad guy will, as you allude, take note of the "rackin round" sound and just scram!

And people, in CA, don't shoot em runnin away! They no onger pose a threat and its pretty hard ta splain how he was posing an immediate threat to you with his back to ya..... ;=)

Chico, Bushmaster makes a .450 caliber upper receiver for the AR15. The Upper receiver allows you to change out the upper portion of the gun with Barrel / Bolt and upper housing with just 2 pins. So instead of a .223 plinker you now have a large bore rifle. Hornandy is making the rounds which are 250gr. Flex Tip bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2200 fps and 2686 ft/lbs of energy. They call it the "Thumper"

The .450 is big enough to go after big game at ranges of 200 Yards.

Wow! I did not know that! Bbl and all (that's what threw me)!! And that MV and Wt (KE) is bettern my ol 45-70! That would a hell of a gun! Use the leverlition flex tips in guide gun! They work good! Good huntin BTW ......... Don't mind someone like you sound with AR! (you hunt 4 legged critters!). ;-)

Best reliable handgun for the average gun shy woman IMHO is a user friendly revolver which, unlike a semiautomatic pistol, requires no jacking a round into the chamber or safety removal, either or both of which can be a deal killer for a lady in a high stress situation. It's always ready to go. All she need do is simply point and shoot, kinda like her Kodak camera - don't even need to turn it on.

For general home protection I like the classic S&W Model 36, (.38 Caliber, hollow point) Good manstopper.

I also like the classic S&W Model 34 (.22 Caliber LR, CCI Stinger Hollow point) Will get the job done and offers very economical plinking. Shoot all day for a couple dollars.

My personal choice for decisive home protection is the good old super manstopper, 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 Buck.

I have an old Remington Sportsman "Humpback" model that's been a good trap and skeet shooter over the years and which has won a couple turkeys in its day.

Chico, why do you like #4 shot over 00 Buck?

Saber, I'm in complete agreement about the revolver. I had a .25 automatic (the one stolen years ago) and it used to jam. I understand the reasons for it, small caliber, not a lot of oomph to kick out the casing, inexpensive gun, etc, but after that I never trusted an automatic. Another reason I got away from them is that the Luger was so hard to cock that I had to turn it upside down on the bed to brace it. I have small hands and have never had a lot of strength in them so I'll stick with revolvers even though I don't have as much ammo in the gun itself. The theory for me is, If I need more than 5-6 I'm in deep ca ca anyway.

I watched a show once where they interviewed burglers and one said the thing that scared him most was a terrified woman with a gun. You never knew what she'd do. Wise man.

Ask any cop. Especially homicide dicks. More peeps killed with 22's than any other. Head shot? It'll rattle around in there like an 80 year old puttering around in his garden. No through and through's, just massive damge inside the punkin.

I like revolvers due to simplicity and hisotrical western value. I just like em. Always have. But one of my all time faves is the ol 1911 Series VII I have. Its sloppy as hell (probably why) but I've run reloads JHP's all kinds of non hardball through er and she never jams! EVER! I also had my biggest firearsm aw s***er with it too though! Autos are more prone to FU's by pinheads I don't care what anybody says.

Got to shoot a Glock one day. Didn't like the trigger but I suppose you get used to anything. But that little sucker with a full mag of 14 40 S&W's and one in the pipe and you've got a fist fulla firepower there! But until those 4 legged critters get themselves armed (instead a legged) my six guns will do. (cept ol Betsy -- every time I look at er I think of the Moros and Philippines back at turn of century. Them little ol 38 revolvers just weren't a gettin it! That gun with tht 45 ACP round is a legend!

Now that I've read about tc's 450 AR conversion, I've gotta look inta that. I'm not much (as you can see) for modern weaponry for civ apps like huntin, etc. but say 10 rounds with those ballistics? That gun would be a pig killin sumb**** for sure! Of course ya can fish with dynamite too ;=)

Got my eye on a little bird's head baretta "shopkeeper" model! case hardened frame in 45LC.......God thats a beauty! Ask Sam.......

Then again.... you could always get an air tank, run hose from tank up shirt and down sleeve, holdin retractable "spike" in yer hand! Gotta be up close and personal though....Mr. Pig might not hold still! ;=)

I have one guide gun in 45-70 and it works well therein. For the most part though, I just use flat head bullets in my lever actions (spire points can set of rounds in tube as the recoil jams primer of round back against the round behind it -- can ruin yer day -- the flexible but still ballistic tips keep this from happenin whilst still giving ya the bennies of a more aerodynamic bullet).

Favorite gun?

Well, my favorite handgun without doubt is the H&K USP Tactical. For wheelguns, I would have a little more difficulty choosing just one. I have Ruger security Six that I have had for 30 years, as well as 3 S&W Wesson Model 66s. They are great guns, but if you look at things like the Ruger GP100 or the Taurus Tracker, they are showing their age.

Long guns... I use a Bushmaster M4 modified with an Ares Defense GSR 35 gas system. For precision shooting, my all time favorite is the H&K PSG 1. My second favorite would be an Accuracy International AW. Unfortunately, I don't own either one, although I have shot both extensively. For my precision piece, I have a heavy barreled Remington 700 BDL with a John Plaster stock. It is a good 800 meter gun.

Shotguns... I am a big Mossberg fan. I would trust my 590 to get me through just about anything.

Chico - Where can you get the dynamite to fish with? LOL, I know that most people don't like see the need for the amount of firepower that common civilians enjoy with rifles like the AR15. Most of them haven't had the chance to go shooting for a day with one and see it is not that different from other rifles. Yes it is black and ominous but they are fun and they serve the same purpose as any hunting rifle. You just may not have to reload between hunting seasons with the AR! I'll let you know how the .450 works pig hunting.

I think it is great. I don't really see a downside to it, unless expense is a factor in the decision making process.When I made the decision to do the mod on mine, Bushmasrer had anounced theirs, but it wasn't released yet. I suspect there isn't really a whole lot of difference between the two. I think they even retail for the same amount.

The rifle shoots cleaner, the bolt stays cooler, and reliability is greatly enhanced.

It isn't something I would recommend to the average, weekend shooter. there just isn't a need for it. But if you anticipate a situation where extended use in less than ideal conditions is a real possibility, I would recommend it highly.

Now, to answer the typical anti-gunner question: Why do you need so many guns?"

My answer is: These are firearms yes, but more importantly the are tools.

You would never use a Crescent wrench to change a flat tire now would you?

Why? The crescent wrench is the wrong tool for the job.

If I want to hunt pheasant I'm not going to use my M-1 Garand because hitting a pheasant with a round from my M-1 would leave nothing but bird poop and feathers! Same principal goes for personal protection. While I could use my Smith and Wesson Model 29 (44 Mag) to protect my household, I would run the risk of over penetration and going through the bad guy and having my round end up in the next room. The 45acp will get the job done with less risk of over penetration.

Just like working around the house, you use the right tool for the job. (Besides I not only want these "tools", I bought and paid for them in accordance with State and Federal law!)

Bitter? No.

Well prepared? Absolutely

I agree Chico. That Stewart guy that shot the guy trying to break into his house to torch it used a shotgun. He didn't kill him instantly, but he did enough damage to make him retreat, and he bled out eventually.

And true, I carry my little Glock 27 all the time. But the difference is now I'm not expected to take action when I see a crime committed. I carry it for mine and my families personal safety. Let the youngsters deal with it after I call 911.

Assembly Bill 2235, passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee. AB2235 would forbid the sale of handguns other than "owner-authorized (or "smart") handguns" -- that is, handguns with a permanent, programmable biometric feature that renders the firearm useless unless activated by the authorized user. Chico, Ob, I see your point about potential collateral damage and the possibility of injuring or even killing innocents by 12 gauge overspray, but I've heard so many stories about meth-loaded perps still coming at ya despite a magazineful of pistol rounds in 'em.

Cut 'em in half, blow their heads off and the danger is done.

An average load .45 round travels at about 600-700 FPS and is not likely to go too far past a target, but I can't imagine a 12 gauge load of 00 going too much faster or further.

What is the effective range of a 9mm or .45 caliber versus a 12 gauge?

Never mind, I looked it up and found that the average effective range of a shotgun is about 50 yards with a dispersal of about 8 feet and .45 about the same. The trajectory of either round with an average load and round weight dips severely at just under 2 feet at 50 yards and a round missing the target is not likely to travel too much further before grounding out.

Even in close quarters, I'm inclined to rely on the shotgun with it's superior firepower over a pistol.

Of course, there are some automatic and even semi automatic weapons with awesome firepower capable of getting the home protection job done, but many are illegal.

Let's see: It's 3:23AM, a window in another part of your house is carefully opened by a doped-up burglar and this felon is now roaming your darkened house. A noise wakes you and as you wipe the sleepfrom your eyes you hear him in the hallway.

You call 911 and whisper into the phone someone is in your house and you're told: "Don't worry, a sheriff is on his way (from Lamont)".

Terrified, you open your night stand drawer and remove your 45 Caliber "Smart Gun" to defend yourself, but Oh my God! You cannot locate the "Smart Ring" that is the key to allowing the firearm to fire. You're still groping in the dark for the electronic key to your firearm when this drugged up felon opens your bedroom door, calmly turns on the bedroom lights, takes careful aim and shoots you and your wife to death. Once he is done with you, your children are the next ones to die. Maybe he is a sex offender and he will have some "fun" with your kids before he kills them. What's to stop him?

If these "Smart Guns" are so damn smart why is it no law enforcement officers support their carrying them while they are on duty? If the "Smart Guns" are so smart why is there a provision in the law to exempt all law enforcement officers from having to comply with the law?

Who's the dummy?

Certainly not law enforcement. They don't want a defensive weapon that cannot be counted upon to function as intended!

If this proposed law comes to fruition, You will be to blame for allowing these corrupt politicians to needlessly risk your life by mandating an unproven technology on a defensive weapon. You need to get off your backside and give Hell to these politicians who willingly trade their soul for political contributions from PAC's. These anti-firearm politicians would gladly wipe their backside with the Second Amendment of the Constitution and need to be thrown out of office!

If you allow this to stupid legislation to come to pass, you will have no one but yourself to blame when you cannot buy a firearm to protect yourself.
