MS may be removing XP from store shelves, but Dell and other the major computer makers are still providing it upon request.

The federal government has refused MS' request to have their new computer purchases loaded with Vista and will continue to provide XP licenses.

I have a desktop with XP and a laptop with Vista. XP is much more stable and easier to use. Vista's only improvement is on multimedia tasks, it lags in everything else.

Neither one is good, but I have used XP quite a bit more. Vista is really only good if you have a new computer. My suggestion...Get a MAC and don't worry about viruses or malware or the "computer not responding" message. Their resale value (yes people really do buy used macs) makes up for the price difference.

Do we have to choose from XP or Vista? Because I'd opt for neither. I use Linux at home and at work. If Windows is absolutely needed, I fire up a VMWare virtual machine with either 2000 or XP.

I have XP on my desktop, Vista on my new laptop. Couldn't tell you the difference since I'm technoligcally challenged anyway. As long as I can get to the internet and have a word processing program, I'm good to go.

The kids and I had a discussion last night about how far we've come and how different the operating systems are since my first. It was a Commodore 64. My second one didn't have Windows either and I used Basic and thought I was on a roll. I could search for anything on my computer with just a few commands and could search in my checkbook book with less than more than keys. It took 17 floppys (5 1/4) to back up my information. If we'd stayed with that, I probably would have learned more but when Windows came along it became a relative no brainer. And that worked for me.

is it true Vista has problems with Adobe Acrobat? Not reader, but the actual acrobat.

There are some problems with Acrobat Standard version 6, and with the Standard and Professional versions of 7, but version 8 seems to be stable on Vista. The problems I ran into with version 6 & 7 of Acrobat had to do with printing and rouge DLLs not removing themselves from the services after shutting down Acrobat. The DLLs would interfer with MS Word and OpenOffice, causing them to be unstable. The Reader versions don't seem to have any problems on Vista.

Make sure you get the latest (June 2008) patch for which ever version you're running (including the Reader version). There's a critical security issue that has been found in the wild it fixes.

My first computer was the MITS Altair 8800. You had to put it together yourself. My current desktop is an IBM AS400 mini-mainframe running an enterprise version of XP and Red Hat.

I have a Gateway running vista Home Premium. The only software on it is a surveillance program called Geovision that monitors security cameras. Vista will give me a blue screen every 2 to 3 days, shut down and restart. Bottom line -- not happy with Vista.

After building this system I found that a lot of software I had would not run under Vista and some hardware was not compatible. I have a Canon camera with a USB interface that won’t work and also an ATI HDTV card. What is funny is all my old Microsoft software seem to work.
