A Hot Slice of Pizza - The Insider - TheInsider's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Ordering hot & fresh Papa John's pizza easier than ever since you don't even need to call or go online to order. They have gone geeky. They now launched a text ordering feature that's made ordering Papa John's pizza as simple as sending a short text message from your cell phone.
Have we really gotten that lazy?
I prefer a more gourmet pizza myself than Papa Johns. I was happy when California Pizza Kitchen opened in Bakersfield since I was looking forward to getting something other than a Pepperoni pizza. I found our CPK a bit disappointing, and it seems like other Inside Guide reviewers has as well since it is averaging *** out of ***** on the Inside Guide.
The best pizza I've ever had was from a sidewalk vendor in Southern Italy. It was a thin crust pizza with buffalo mozzarella, zucchini flowers and anchovies. It made American style pizza seem like a joke. When I do order pizza (about every 6 months or so), it's usually a Hawaiian with pineapple and Canadian Bacon. I also must have it with a side of ranch for dipping.
What's your favorite pizza? What's your favorite pizza place in Bakersfield?

Dec 16, 2007 at 02:12 PM : Winco Supermarket has...

Winco Supermarket has a Pizza kitchen at the front and it's really not bad at all. When I shop I buy a BIG slice (which is actually two) and the price includes a can of soda. When I first started this it was 2 bucks. It's gone up to 2.50 I believe but still a good deal. Like all "by the slice" places, you get what you get and it isn't always what you really wanted. I like to buy it on my way in and eat it on my rounds. When I need two hands to control the situaltion, I find the pet food aisle less crowded so you can park it for a bit. Otherwise I get it on my way out and eat it in the car. They really need to add a couple of tables.

My favorite pizza was the defunct Dino's Pizza in M'Boro TN. Of course, since I ran it, I made mine the way I wanted. We had a great crust and outstanding sauce for a great pizza experience. Closest here used to be Magoos but I heard they aren't as good as they once were.

Ron..I know I have that recipe somewhere. I kept it for old times sake. The Dino's in M'Boro had a verticle dough machine so the recipe has to be altered a little as opposed to the standard dough maker. It's a commercial sized recipe to make dough enough for an entire day of pizza. LOL..more than you'd want I'll bet.

Debbie...Dino's in Portland was really good. Steve/Ron perfected that pizza sauce recipe and it was awesome. I have to admit though...I didn't have the variety that Dino's 1 had. All I had was pizza and sub sandwiches. I got really good at cooking scrambled eggs in that oven as well as fruit turnovers from pizza dough. You get desperate for a change after a while. It was around two years after I came back before I could face eating pizza...no matter how good it was..LOL. Now I measure all pizza against the standards that Dino's1 set for quality and flavor. Papa Johns came to town and sunk us. That was painful.

Cut up some good cheese your choice chopped ham shedded bell peppers and tomato's

Get water in a deep pan and boil put zip lock in for 15 minutes watch and push down so often

Favorite pizza hands down is this great little place in Las Vegas called Settebello. Oh wait I forgot we're in Bakersfield and once you've had pizza from Settebello nothing else will compare. I mean nothing here in Bakersfield is comparable, but if your ever in Las Vegas its totally worth the 20 minute drive from the Strip to try the best pizza ever.

My favorite Pizza ever is Gino's East Pizza in Chicago. It is deep dish and sure hard to beat. It has corn meal crust.
