DUI Checkpoints - Jammin' With The Banned - adampayne's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Does any one else find it troubling that DUI checkpoints only seem to be held at in the very poorest of locations in this county? I see nine arrests were made in Wasco, at Central and Highway 46 this past weekend. There was one on East California Avenue very recently. There was also one on South Union Avenue not long ago, and another at East Truxton Avenue if memory serves me. I do not recall seeing any on Calloway and Rosedale or Stockdale. I do not recall one at the Truxton Exchange and Coffee Road. Don't people with means ever drink? Does the check point have more to do with poverty than safety?

Adam, I always figured that calling it a DUI checkpoint was for legal purposes. I don't think the police can just setup a random drivers license check. They're going after people driving illegally, and catching them in bunches. I tell you though, I sure see a lot of people in the southwest that seem like they're driving drunk. Either that or their driving skills are so poor that they can't keep their SUV in their own lane. Those curves are kind of tough I guess. Nah, it's the cell phones.

Adam, you obviuosly do not follow the local news regarding checkpoints very closely. The city police hold them on Ming Ave, near the Marketplace; Ming Ave, just east of Valley Plaza; Coffee Rd. near Hageman; on 23rd St near F St, and recently on Stockdale Hwy., near Stockdale Country Club. These are not exactly poverty areas, like you suggest. Plus, there are certain safety factors that need to to be considered as far as where they can safely be held, both for the public and the officers. What I find troubling is when people post blogs without having the correct facts, or who make broad, uninformed, statements.

I think they are held all over the city, but it is true if you are poor ,you take a harder hit.For the life of me I can not understand why folks can not just take a cab. We do need more cabs, the wait can be so long to get one. But say dropping $50 bucks on cab fare for a night spent drinking vs. impound fees, court costs, class costs,etc..let alone the cost of hurting others or yourself...the math seems simple enough to me and I do not "do" math.

Glad to see you post your response, OldBlue56. I only follow these notices through the B.com site, and when they are published in the paper. I have not seen these locales published recently, after the fact of course, and appreciate your commentary. I stated that these positions "seemed to be held" only in the poorest areas, and simply asked readers three questions based on my recent observations. I find it interesting that you equate three questions with "broad, uninformed, statements", and are troubled by them.
Anyway, thanks for the information.

Adam, I think PP2 has it spot on. They have to have them in "poor" neighborhoods (really meaning places where illegals live), because they aren't suppose to be driving without licenses. And under the ruse of it being called a DUI checkpoint, makes it shadow the fact, they're trying to remove some of these people from the road. BUT, they're still NOT checking immigration status....i know i know, it's not their job, right?

Adam, all the checkpoints I referred to were reported in the TBC, either online or in print. I was not necessarily referring to you on this blog, as it happens daily here. However, when you say they "seem" to be held in poor areas, and they aren't, according to the news, it's does not sound very informed.

And PP, the police also conduct drivers license checkpoints. These too have been ruled legal. And of course they are going after people driving illegally, like with suspended licenses, no license, no insurance, false tags, ect.

Woof, I hate to break this to you, but the "illegals" are driving all over this town, not just the poor neighborhoods. Who do you think is doing all the construction in the new housing tracts all over town? They commute every morning all over town, just like everyone else. And you are right, the local police do not enforce the Federal immigration laws. If they did, they would not be available to respond to all the other calls that come in every few minutes from the public. Plus, if the Feds aren't going to have an enforcement office here in town, why should the local police and sheriff do their job?

Jeepers, I thought I thanked OldBlue56 for providing additional information. I would have thanked you as well Murphy, if I had been able to figure out what you originally posted. I'm glad to hear that DUI checkpoints are held at the church on Stockdale Highway. I am glad to hear that DUI checkpoints are held on White Lane and Ming Avenue. I have not seen these places recently mentioned in the paper as DUI checkpoints. Maybe you can let the folks in on when these checkpoints took place. I am certainly in favor of scattering the checkpoints, as dgrealish suggested.
<itunes:summary>Jeepers, I thought I thanked OldBlue56 for providing additional information.

Timec, again, you show your ignorance. The DUI checkpoints have a set way they are conducted, as per the law. It is not based on the driver's race, sex, or whether they are driving a nice BMW 525i, or a p.o.s. 1994 Honda.

Now I will say that any good officer can find a reason to stop just about any vehicle he/she sees, if they know the law. There is almost no vehicle that can't be LEGALLY stopped. There are all kinds of reasons, but I won't overload your little, or big, head with the reasons.

The only time I was stopped in a DUI checkpoint it was on Rosedale Highway in front of Rockin Rodeo on New Years Eve. My then fiance was driving a new ford pickup and we were both dressed up for the evening. And we are both "white."

License was checked, registration was checked, flashlights in our faces, a couple of questions..and we were on our way.

Yup..we were profiled all right, we were driving on the road, guess that made us fair game, danged white people.

By the way..by 11 AM on Saturday most everyone in Wasco knew about the checkpoint...it wasn't much of a surprise since it was in the local weekly newspaper. And just to clue everyone in, nine arrests for traffic or license violations isn't a huge amount in Wasco. So what I hear you saying is that because they put a checkpoint up in Wasco they're targeting unlicensed drivers. Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't that what they're supposed to be doing?
