Rental discrimination or not? - Rental discrimination or not? - bigboi909's Blog - Bakersfield.com

My family and I have been looking for a rental home preferrably in the SW area of Bakersfield, but I we have been looking all over. I have gotten numbers and address's off of Craigslist, the local paper and signs posted infront of the house or on sign post. It never fails especially with the latino/hispanic population that once they hear that I am from another race they quickly state that it is rented before I can even finish my sentence. I know that people can rent to whom ever they wish too but here is the straw that has broke the camels back, after some time these same homes are still for rent. So I got clever I had friends of mines that are Latino/Hispanic call regarding the house for rent and they are asked how many will be living in the home and when would they like to come and see it. Now I call right back to the same person and again I am told the house is rented. This is also noticealbe in the mailbox papers or the free magazines at the stores that only have some rental's in spanish and it is not in english anywhere believe me I have checked it out. My money is just as good as the next persons. My only sin is the color of my skin..... Welcome to Kern County

Kern County aka Klan Kounty....This town is very racist.

My mother and I were at Costco the other day. There were two coffee cups on the table. I sat down on the opposite side thinking someone else may be sitting on the other side: people share tables at Costco because it is so crowed. I was more than willing to move if someone else claimed the table. My mom and I sat down and a Hispanic lady walked up and said " DON'T YOU SEE THE CUPS, I AM SITTING HERE" I replied, " Oh I am sorry I didn't know if someone was still here" She said "WELL THERE IS SOMEONE SITTING HERE" I thought about how she just yelled at me like I was one of her children so I told her.." I am not moving because you have a smart a** mouth" She was livid. She said well we all will just sit here...I said that is perfectly fine with me. She sat there for a minute and she go up and yelled "SINCE OBAMA BECAME PRESIDENT YOU PEOPLE THINK YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT"

How did a seat at Costco turn into an Obama thing or black vs. Brown?

If she thought she could whoop me she would have....but she knew not to even go there..

~LING~ I moved here from Los Angeles/Diamond Bar and my wife came from Los Angeles as well and she has also lived in Las Vegas. It is just funny that any one we have met that are not originally from B'Town all have the same question-What in the hell is wrong with these folks here. Bakersfield has it's own rules, regulations and laws. The people here with any authority use it at any cost and it is known that they do this but heck the higher authorities are usually a family member, ex- lover, neighbor or someone they went to school with. I caution anyone don't rattle to many cages because you will be black balled here and I know this from experience and this is within all races.

Hey bigboi, I don't know which part of town you want to live in, but there's a lot of pretty good apartments over by West High (New Stine and Belle Terrace.) My sister had a really cute apartment right behind West High, and she said it was a pretty safe and good complex. A good friend of mine also lived over there, just north of West High. There's also a bunch of cute apartments over on White Ln and Ashe. Also, the east side has some good deals. My husband and I had a townhouse apartment (really, really cute) on Panorama and Fairfax--two bedrooms, two and 1/2 bathrooms, living room with fireplace, big kitchen and dining room, two-car garage. It went for $775, but that was 5 years ago. Still, I bet it's within $1200.

I don't know how the neighborhood is nowadays, but Q St downtown also has a bunch of apartments. Back when I lived on it there was a lot of break-ins and gang activity, but it might be better now. Anyway, the apartments there are pretty reasonably priced.

Good luck--and sorry about the racists jerks you're dealing with.

Funny, I obey the law (for the most part) so I never have to worry about crooked cops or courts or payoffs. I don't have to worry about who I know and who I don't. Ever notice the ones who scream the loudest are the ones breaking the law or have family breaking the law?

When it comes to jobs, the best way to find work is through networking and yeah..it just might be who you know there.

If one can slip back in time simply by leaving Los Angeles behind I'd say that's a good thing. Any reason for leaving Los Angeles is a good one. I can bash L.A. you see because I choose not to live there. Bakersfield bashers? Now that's another story..why ARE you here?

Dec 29, 2008 at 04:12 PM : If you have pets, be...

If you have pets, be careful renting at Laurelwood Oaks (one of those White Ln and Ashe complexes CB mentioned). The complex manager tried to say my cats had ruined the carpet when there were no visible stains in the carpet nor any odors since I always cleaned up after my cats' hairballs with an enzyme cleaner. By the frequent visits of the carpeting guys to the complex, I suspect they tried to replace the carpet any time a pet owner moved out. They ran a black light over the carpet and saw the soap residue from the cleaner and said the carpet was "stained" (even after I showed them it was just soap by spritzing a clear area of the carpet with the cleaner, causing the same white color to show up under the blacklight, and showed them online that white under a blacklight means soap). All the carpet really needed was a shampooing to get it ready for the next tenant. Soap residual would come out easily with a steam cleaner. And it was brand new when I moved in (another sign that they made it a habit of replacing the carpet regardless of if it needed it) and I had lived there only a bit over a year, so there was no wear and tear. The only issue was the non-visible soap residual that only showed up under blacklight and only right where I had said I had used the pet cleaner (because I had told them before they used the blacklight exactly where I had used the cleaner).

Thankfully, a month before I moved out the management company changed to one I had dealt with in the past (so they knew my cats were not destructive by looking at the move-out report from the prior property I'd lived at). The company had kept on the old complex manager instead of bringing in one of their own, so perhaps that was the root of the problem. In any event, I called up the management company and complained about what the complex manager was trying. They sent out one of their people who agreed with me that all the carpet needed was a shampooing. The complex manager still tried to skirt the law in other fashions after that (missing deadlines for sending the deposit invoice, claiming to have sent the refund to the wrong address, etc). Each time, I had to complain to the management company to get the problem resolved. I can only hope they replaced the complex manager since I moved out, but I suspect they haven't based on some recent user reviews over at Yahoo.

Usually I try to avoid speaking bad about companies, but this was by far my worst rental experience in any town. Even the other rentals I had by the same management company were much better handled. I can live with a $60 carpet shampoo charge or a $100 cleaning charge (since I don't bother to dust the mini-blinds or such when I move out). I didn't even mind (much) when the out-of-state rental company up north had to be reminded that CA law says they must refund pet deposits for their CA properties. But to try to charge me thousands to replace a perfectly good carpet.... that really got my blood boiling.

Each and every complex interprets the rental laws differently..don't ask me why-but they do--the only one that can sort it out-by law-is a small claims Judge-and by that time..who cares....

The managers job is to smile and agree AND RENT YOU THAT TURD....then when the lease comes up for your signature---read the damn thing B-4 you initial OR sign anything...

But good luck with this fight...I'd give up--put a Molotov cocktail thru the window late at night--and call it good....IMHO
