We already have public-owned "banks". They are called Credit Unions. They are member-owned. We plan on switching our accounts, and many of our friends are doing so as well.

Here Here, ghostriter! Credit Unions are the only way to go for personal banking. For many years I was a Wells Fargo customer. When I found out that I met the qualifications to join Kern Schools FCU, I did it immediately. When I went in to close my accounts, the bank manager asked me "Why are you leaving us for a credit union", and I sad "Because I can." She was so impressed with my honest answer, she waived the account closing fee. (Another reason to avoid banks.)
