So sterile or elderly heterosexuals, I guess, shouldn't be allowed to marry because no children could result? Lovely. What religion advocates that?

And for crying out loud, please enroll in a good high school government course that will explain to you what the judicial branch's job is in this country: to interpret the laws. You and I have every right to vote, but when we vote for something that violates the Constitution, the Constitution trumps our wishes. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Paper #78 wrote, "wherever a particular statute contravenes the Constitution, it will be the duty of the judicial tribunals to adhere to the latter and disregard the former." In other words, just because lots of folks like an idea, it's not necessarily legal--which is why Supreme Court decisions like Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education had to come along in the Civil Rights era to abolish the legal practice of separate-but-equal facilities in the segregated South. The South was pissed, but don't you agree that the Constitution's guarantees of equality take precedence over what racist southerners approved of?

It's too early in the morning for me to have to work this hard trying to straighten out your reasoning. Jeesh.

This is great for oil companies reaping record billion dollar profits. The House of Saud and the House of Bush, along with the contractors (and of course Israel), are the only beneficiaries of this war.

Although the separation of church and state isn't outlined in the constitution, it is one that many Americans have adhered to for decades. Marriage has always been and will remain a religious institution and until we open ourselves to ideas that aren't all that radically different from our own, we will continue to see conflict among us. Chances are, you do not personally know any homosexuals. Your ignorance, however, will probably always keep you from seeing them as anything other than homosexuals. I believe that homosexual marriage is a stride in the right direction; unfortunately, the rights will still adhere to their traditional values.

None of the animals I listed displayed homosexuality or bisexuality only in captivity. They have all been observed IN THE WILD. Heck - go over to Truxton lake in the summer. The ducks in the lake go for that male mallard on male mallard action. ;) You stated that homosexuality was unnatural and asked for proof. We've given it to you.

Do you follow heterosexual couples into their bedrooms to make sure they're doing it the way biology intends them to? If the answer is no, then I have to ask why you're so determined to tell homosexuals what is and is not natural?

If people believe the Bible tells them not to be homosexual, then I respect your desire to live by the principles of the Bible. But, that's all you get. You don't get to tell others how or what to do between consenting adults. Furthermore, there are many, many things we do that aren't natural; wearing clothes, giving birth laying on our backs, taking antibiotics, flu shots, eating foods with chemically developed preservatives and hormones, condoms, and about one hundred other things that don't qualify as natural. Do you lobby against those things, too?

It's a sad day when my adopted town in Indiana is much more progressive than my hometown of Bakersfield. Bakersfield residents, perhaps we should deal with the smog, urban sprawl, home foreclosures, violence, gangs, and high taxes. The kind of stuff that can actually hurt us.

The “judicial tyranny” and “utter destruction” from overturning the gay marriage ban Marylee alleges is ludicrous. Utter destruction has yet to devastate Massachusetts or the dozen or so nations where gay marriage legal. I don’t understand the fear of gay marriage and the need to legislate discrimination. Gay Americans are not any less deserving of marriage rights. Gays might as well bring some sort of sanctity toward marriage since they will probably respect the institution more – more so than the scores of divorced straight Americans.

Re: judicial tyranny – yes, how dramatic! Marylee seems to forget that is what (state and federal) Supreme Courts are for -- to act as a check and balance in government and overturn unconstitutional laws. Did Ms. Shrider flunk government in college?

History has shown us that voters and legislators can’t always be trusted to enact fair and just laws. Where should I begin? Such laws that have been overturned in the past -

- Various state sodomy laws which basically would have made it illegal to even be gay, let alone enter into a gay marriage
- The Racial Integrity Act which banned interracial marriage

- The Jim Crow laws, which legalized “separate but equal” racial segregation and discrimination
- The death penalty (in the case of juveniles)
- The Line Item Veto, which would have basically removed all checks and balances from the Executive branch

- Prohibition (the 18^th amendment) – can you imagine not having a legal right to drink a beer?

Granted, most of these weren't direct voter initiatives, but nonetheless laws created by legislators who represent the "majority" of voters. It’s more dangerous to allow the majority to impose unethical laws on a minority. . .think of where we'd be today with regards to all civil rights for women and minorities.

I wish we could worry more about things that actually affect our lives. I'm referring to things like the stagnated war in the Middle East, US citizens facing soaring costs of everything they have to pay for like energy and food with incomes that have remained stagnant for years and the most expensive medical care in the industrialized world available to the fewest people for example.

All that stuff about gay marriage, prayer in schools, gun control flag burning and such are so much legal fru-fru; distractions from the real issues. Since gay marriage is the issue of this column and since every honest person recognizes that two people of the same sex getting married or what ever somewhere has absolutely no affect on their own heterogeneous life style the concern often expressed are social financial costs. Let's face it. Those are minimal when compared to the social and financial costs of such problems as underage, unwed pregnancies emergency room health care for uninsured people and illegal immigration and such.

Please. Let's let these private behavior issues go and stick to the stuff that actually matters.

I suspect her department performs less than ten similar ceremonies a month for “traditional” marriages. What a budget buster!! Fortunately, same sex couples can be wed by clergy from the Metropolitan Community Church, the Episcopal Church, the Congregational Church and from many independent clergy residing within Kern County.
