I know everyone is absolutely stunned at the passing (?) of the only fat mortal to denigrate the Tink of Wink...better know as TinkyWink. Sad times surely lie ahead for us all...being the degenerates that we are...or perhaps just me. I did not hear of Jerry's passing (?) with anything resembling melancholy...no sir...not me. I rejoiced in it...reveled in fact that at last a terrible discordant voice had at last been stilled.

How does one describe a man of the so called cloth that held the amount of bigotry in that empty black heart...a man of the Lord? One doesn't...because he held secrets...dark secrets in his breast that he cloaked in religion...and the Lord's work that he was compelled to perform. If there really is a God...s/he should really look into the people that claim to represent his/her Godness...because so many of them make a mockery of the very diety they claim to represent.

I'm sure on one hand he presented his God as a merciful and loving God...one that loves all people and creatures of the earth...after all...s/he created them...right? That sounds rather like the intent to treat people and creatures equally to me. Oh...I know man has the dominion over the animals and the fishes of the sea...I know the drill. But if man were created in the Divine one's image...(love, faith, intelligence and mercy...or something like that...it's been a long time for me)...then why would a professed religious leader have such hate in his heart for others that God would automatically love equally?

That brings us to Jerry's selection of his choices for evil doers. Gays, Lesbians, anyone not white and a fundamentalist, democrats, same sex marriage, abortion...and a little something called free speech. He took it into his mind that free speech guaranteed by the Constitution...and written by some of the best minds in generations before and to come...that free speech wasn't such a good thing. Of course...he was completely free to say whatever he chose about others. He called Desmond TuTu a phony. That one really sticks in my throat. But one day he thought he'd tangle with Larry Flynt of Hustler fame and found that being the God Guy didn't seem to work for him this time.

Jerry tried to sue Larry for printing an advertisement for Campari (an apertif) that talked about a person's first time. It was a light hearted attempt with celebrities in mind. It lead people down the path that ol' Jerry had done IT with his mother-in-law in an outhouse. It was a parody. Well Larry got a fine...and then took it to the Supreme Court...that's right... Flynt appealed to the Supreme Court, which ruled UNANIMOUSLY for him in Hustler Magazine v. Falwell. The opinion, written by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, found that creators of parodies of public figures are protected against civil liability by the First Amendment, unless the parody includes false statements of fact made in knowing or reckless disregard for the truth.

No one could believe that Sandra Day O'Connor, Antonin Scalia, William Rehnquist and others would side with what was considered a pornographer vs. a preacher. The rule of the day was for free speech. It wasn't that Larry won that day...it was that the 1st Amendment won that day in all its glory...free speech stood alone in that moment in time...and ruled the day. Falwell was the detritus left at the side of the road of truth and right. You and I won that day of days...I'll never forget it. The Justices saw what was really at stake...and did the right thing. That must have clogged at least one of Jerry's arteries that very day from disappointment...and his lack of understanding how a righteous Dude like himself could possibly lose...but lose he did...and it was a marvelous thing to behold.

So we still had years to go listening to his judgments and pronouncements on people and their lives and what abject sinners they were. Being a bigot, homophobe, hate monger, glutton, man of avarice about town, I'll throw in liar, certainly greed (because we all know the preachers always need money for God)...not sure about lust...but he sure did talk about it a lot...so I'm suspicious I admit. Now by his girth alone I think he may have had a Henry the Vlll complex or something. Let's face it...the guy was a tub of lard! I think he enjoyed a little too much steak and lobster and maybe throw in a lot of alfredo sauce...some wine...and you have a major heart attack in the making.

Now I figure that he spent most of his religious life helping to fill people's heart with hate for others not involved in their fundamentalist views...even to the point of putting down Martin Luther King Jr. So for preaching hate to his followers and intolerance of others (in soooo many ways)...I nominate Jerry for a turn with the worms of eternity. May he not rest in peace...with the kind of body fat he carried around I'd say that he'll keep the creatures of the underworld gnawing happy for some time to come.

And during that time...he might reflect on his mistakes to his fellow man...equal in the sight of his God mind you...and suffer the pangs of the damned as according to his bible...he should be tormented for not following in the footsteps of his Christ who led a simple and pure life...and looked upon all men as worthy of love and kindness...something our Jerry was not capable of...ever. Was there not a commandment of the 10...that said love thy neighbor as thyself? He must not have liked himself. People look to denigrate others in order to make themselves look good...what a very sad day for religion that is indeed.

May 16, 2007 at 01:05 PM : Tinky Winky says...

Tinky Winky says bye-bye to Jerry Falwell

The former TV star recalls the trauma of being called gay by the conservative preacher.

By King Kaufman

May. 16, 2007 | Eight years ago the Rev. Jerry Falwell warned parents that BBC children's television star Tinky Winky was a hidden symbol of homosexuality. Falwell died Tuesday at 73, and the world wanted to talk to Tinky Winky.

"They're calling again, again, again," he said by phone from his home in Islington, in London. A spokesman said the former "Teletubbies" costar got more than 100 calls from reporters in the hour following news of Falwell's death.

"Oh dear, it's easy to say the wrong thing here," he said. "Tinky Winky sad whenever someone dies, but ..." He left it hanging there.

In a 1999 article in his National Liberty Journal headlined "Tinky Winky Comes Out of the Closet," Falwell pointed out that Winky could be taken as representing gays.

"He is purple -- the gay pride color, and his antenna is shaped like a triangle -- the gay pride symbol," Falwell wrote. "The character, whose voice is that of a boy, has been found carrying a red purse in many episodes and has become a favorite character among gay groups worldwide."

In the resulting media firestorm, gay-rights activists called for Winky to come out while Christian groups demanded the BBC fire him so that he couldn't, in Falwell's words, "role-model the gay lifestyle."

"It was traumatizing, really," says Winky, who now owns a holistic healing center and makes occasional appearances on British TV. "I'm a very private Teletubby. I just wanted to get away, go over the hills and far away. But when you're 7 feet tall and purple with an antenna on your head and a TV screen in your belly, where are you going to go?"

Winky says he tried to contact Falwell after the article came out, but the evangelist wouldn't take his calls.

"I wanted to know why he didn't talk to me first," Winky says. "It's not like I'm hard to reach. Have the pinwheel call me. But really I just wanted to clap him on the head with Tinky Winky bag."

The star never has clarified his sexual orientation, insisting on his privacy and denying rumors over the years that he had affairs with two of his costars on the 1997-2001 show, the male Dipsy and the female Po.

"We love each other very much," he says. "Big hug. But it's not like that. It was a kids show, know what I mean? And this Falwell guy and his followers wanted to turn us into something else. We weren't modeling a gay lifestyle and we weren't trying to corrupt anyone's kids. We were just kids ourselves, really. Give us a little Tubby toast or custard and a film of some kids washing clothes or something, that's all we needed. We didn't give a shit about modeling a lifestyle."

Tinky Winky sounds angry. The wounds are still raw.

"I'm just practicing my craft, working for the kids, and all at once the tabloids are everywhere on me," he says. "I couldn't even go out. Was it a gay club? Was I talking to a woman? It was bollocks."

Winky chuckles. "I must say, though," he says, "without getting into too many details, we had a girl in the group who ran around this kids show yelling, 'Cooter! Cooter!' And I'm the gay one? Do me a favor."

Through a spokeswoman, Po declined to comment for this article.

Winky says the Teletubbies stay in touch, and he remains friends with both Dipsy, who owns a nightclub in West London where Winky is often seen, and Po. Winky says he and Laa-Laa never really got along during the show's run, but, "We're fine now. We've come to appreciate each other."

Asked about Falwell's death, Winky turns serious and chooses his words carefully.

"I'm not going to pretend I'm sadder than I am," he says. "There were late nights during the dark times when I wished to hear news like this. I'd be lying if I denied that. I don't feel that way anymore. I like to think I've grown over the years, gotten past all that pain.

"But at the end of the day, I'm not terribly sad, and I think a lot of people feel the same way. Jerry Falwell was a divisive person, a hateful person, and what I've tried to be all about, in the Teletubbies days and since then, has been love. I've got to keep it that way. I don't want anybody feeling good about it when it's my time for Tubby bye-bye."

OMGoodness! Comb licker...I had to get up off the floor...tears still in eyes to get to the keyboard...still laughing hard...this guy who goes to work with holes in his socks. Not that there is anything wrong with that! Licking ones comb, dentures or socks...nothing wrong with that. But doing it publicly is just soooo wrong...and I'm not a prude either. Somebody with the money to throw around like that wearing socks with holes to the World Bank is just not done. I do believe I've seen video of him picking his nose...ewww!

This guy with no class needs to retire to the old folks home and he can take his skank with him after all the thievery they've pulled off on the world. He needs a good kick in the nads...if he even has any. I hope his arteries clog and he starts that spiral toward the floor...and as he's going down...his life has to flash before his eyes in slow motion...and he knows his time has come...and OMG! I'm melting...I'm melting! The monkeys flock around him in mock horror...and look to what they believe are the heavens...(whatever!)...and sing in their best monkey sing-song......."Ding Dong the Wolf is dead...ding dong the wicked Wolf is dead!"
What an absolutely corrupt government we live under to allow someone of his ilk to stay in office...and then there's Gonzo...but they have to back him...it's gone too far now to back peddle on that. Not enough room to go on with a list here...or time for that matter. As Henry ll said to his immediate guard about Thomas Becket..."Who will rid me of this man?"...or something of that effect without getting out the reference book...it's too hot to think about it.

And to take your bet Random, I don't think Gonzo will be leaving soon, if ever. He's untouchable unless impeached (which will take time) and is a lightning rod taking attention away from Rove. Besides, who would Bush be able to appoint afterwards? Certainly not another "loyal Bushie". As long as Gonzo is in place, they can stall or outright prevent so many other things from coming to the forefront. No, I think he's much more valuable to them right where he is. Sure, the Pres loses credibility when he's there, but honestly how much below 25% can he go? The war is hurting him more than Gonzo, so he'll be kept on doing a "heckuva job".

The truth about the Rev. Jerry Falwell is that he was a character assassin and hype artist who left little positive impact on the United States—and little negative impact either, for that matter. Besides founding Liberty University, he won’t be remembered as nearly as influential as he’s made out to be.

From the 1980s on, Falwell existed mostly as a media creation, not a real player in national politics. He missed the cable TV revolution, which deprived him of a platform. He took over Jimmy and Tammy Faye Bakker’s PTL after it collapsed in scandal, but by then its revenues were a modest $13 million. The related theme park, Heritage USA, went into Chapter 11. His monthly magazine, National Liberty Journal, became a modest success, with an unaudited circulation of 250,000.

Falwell’s power was hyped not just by him but by a media establishment that needed a consistently conservative voice—not to mention a “guest” who could usually be counted on to show up at the studio on time and say something provocative.

The rise of the religious right was an important development in late-20th Century American history. Falwell’s name is among those associated with the movement. But just because someone is famous doesn’t make him significant. Jerry Falwell wasn’t.

That clears it up for me. I guess hate is no issue for you.

As for the democrats here who are calling Bush and Cheney criminals, you seem to be out of step with your "fearless" leaders. Your sentiments and theirs simply don't match, unless they are being deceiptful and concealing their true sentiments.

So I'd save a little of your anger towards your own leaders, who are failing to insert even a bit of backbone if, in fact, they share your sentiments at all. They would never suggested that Bush or Cheney have done anything that would rise to the level of criminal, they have consistently dismissed and distanced themselves from any suggestion of impeachment, and they have now expressed a wish to compromise on a plan for Iraq that will now be bereft of any witholding of funds and dates for withdrawal. Only Kennedy will pull his money where his mouth is. The rest are either incredibly disengenuous, or they are abject cowards. Which is it?

That's why Dobson, Falwell and their ilk are so scared of love, BLT. That's why they need to channel the concept of "love" into so strict a framework, decide whom others can and cannot marry, whom others can and cannot publicly love.

.

Does *THEIR* hatred of liberals, gays and the like not divide?

Falwell was the epitome of this from another commenter here: "Hate divides."

That man was a horrid person who wished harm to others..there is NO way that Jesus tolerates someone who preaches that kind of mierda in HIS name. Thats the difference between ol Jerry and the commenters here. None of us are preachers or pastors in a church or to others about the word of "God"...Falwell had the audacity to actually use our Lord and Saviors name to preach hatred and division.

I was not glad that Saddam was mocked profusely and then hung. I'm glad he was stopped from doing further evil, but I wish he could have been stopped in other ways, like agreeing to comply with the agreements between Iraq and the United Nations.

That being said, none of us, if subjected to intense scrutiny, could survive the hypocricy test. We are all hypocrites on some level. We should strive not to be, and we should not give up our ideals simply because we have not always lived up to them. My ideal is a world where left-wingers, right-wingers and moderates all get along. Is it wrong to hold to such an ideal, given, that I, a mere mortal, am not always able to live up to it?

You are mean, another liberal who would deny people like Dobson or Robertson or even Cheney and Bush the Heimlich maneuver if they were choking on their own garbage is criminal. Even horses deserve to be shot to get them out of their misery and they deserve no less.
It hurts me and offends me when men of great stature are not respected no matter how corrupt and stupid they are, it does bot diminish their stature without them where would we be? God, war and many other things would have to take a back set in our lives without them. No, these heroes deserve out praise and allegiance, without them we would be just another empire that will fall by the wayside.

Praise, only if warranted. Hatred, on the other hand, is never warranted, not according to my beliefs. Jesus teaches me to love my enemies. I have failed, on more than one occasion to follow his teachings in this regard, but when I fall, I try to get back up again, and follow the path leading to unity, love, peace, compassion, and understanding. That path is narrow, but there is certainly more room for those who would put their hatred on hold, in the interest of serving our common interest, as a nation--------survival. Hatred will destroy us in the end. It will cause this nation to implode.

BLT, it is not wrong to hope for such an ideal. It *IS* wrong to use such a call for to make all sides abide by a situation forced on one side by the other. It is reminiscent of the character in the old "Ally McBeal" TV show who would be discovered in some abhorrent behavior and then simply wave a hand and say "Bygones," expecting a fresh start.

.

I'm not talking about the settling of scores. I'm talking about the righting of wrongs. What Falwell, Dobson and his cohort have helped force upon the nation is *WRONG*. I will not allow it to become the status quo.
