I nominate the old gas station and used car signs along North Chester that have survived long past their useful life - maybe a great art deco restoration. The county ruined one perfectly ugly Hudson Gas sign when they realigned the Ferguson - North Chester intersection.

The first four wonders of Kern County would be Jacquie Sullivan, Ken Weir, Harold Hanson and Zack Scrivner, they have been wondering how they got elected and why. They shine like gold and have the value of pot metal. You can’t make that up, it is a natural thing, the will of God, none of that evolution stuff here..

Many of the above are certainly good candidates. However, I believe the first place vote for the wonders of Kern County has to be our District Attorney, Edward Jagels, who has managed to remain in office for 25 years despite the fact that his approval rating among Kern County residents must hover somewhere around 10 percent. This would make anyone wonder how this could be. Perhaps it is the great aura of unethical conduct that he has created to surround his office that scares off all potential candidates for his job.

The Kern Water Bank.

It's 20,000-acres west of Bakersfield along the Kern River to Tupman which stores water so that people in this desert will have something to drink and to irriagate their lawns even in a drought year.

•The Park at River Walk because I think it's haunted (two drownings in the lake and the freak storm last year before the La Mina sponsored Mariachi Concert which caused the cancellation thereof). I really think there's a spiritual force or something working over the Park at River Walk. I have never been there and you won't find me going there anytime soon. It makes me wonder.

The wonders of Bakersfield: 1) A School Board Member, who touts the earth's age at less than 10,000 years , that wants to oversee the hiring of people who oversee the 'education' of our children.

2) People who say they love to live in Bakersfield because the people are friendly.

3) People, whose children will live a shorter life span and have to deal with asthma, allergies and thoat problems, who don't want to harm big corporations( auto companies, corporate farms, dairys, etc ) that are pouring poison into the air.

The seven wonders of Bakersfield, wow i am only limited to 7. Well here is my selection for the most amazing of this great town:

1) The high percentage of coming out of a local wal-mart with some new illness because some other shopper has forgotten to wear a shirt, place a diaper on their child, or someone decides to test out each stick of lipstick and then return it.

2) The excitement that is generated for the fair, which is the same dry, culture free, drunk, urine aroma, gang ran-event. And yet somehow shuts down the city as if the pope was in town for coffee.

3) A significant poor level of air quality that gives new born babies asthma with their first breath.

4) The fact that within that same poor air environment there are homes that are selling for more than $300,000 and at one time Bakersfield was considered to be a hot market for real estate. Apparently, baby asthma isn't as big of an issue as a three car garage. That's allot of room.

5) The insanely high level of illiteracy and high school drop outs. Increasing rates of babies diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome and mental retardation.

6) Non-related wonder, Bakersfield is considered the 5^th most conservative city in the country.

The Seven Wonders of Kern County: The Fort,915 N. 10th St., Taft!!
Was built by the W.P.A. in 1938. A copy of Sutters Fort in Sacramento, but larger!
The Fort housed government offices for many years. It was a hospital for years where
many Westsiders were born. It's been kept in beautiful shape, a site to see!!

1. That Ed Jagels not only gets re-elected, he still gets over 80 percent of the vote.

2. That anybody with half a brain could vote for Chad Vegas to be on a school board. Maybe a quarter brain?

3. That, if the Rabobank Arena could be built, our City Manager could tout the great offerings to come...specifically, Neil Diamond and monster truck rallies.

4. That we still don't have mandatory recycling....the only major city in California still without it.

5. That, despite the air problems and the fact that much of the ordnance is illegal, we can't ban fireworks...yet complain about illegal immigrants.

6. That Mark Abernathy seems to call the shots on anything getting done around here in terms of elections.

7. That, despite the benefits of trees, leaves and shade, deciduous trees here are systematically slaughtered every year. By people who are most likely illegal immigrants...who are working for next to nothing...because the folks who want their trees butchered refuse to hire real tree pruners.
