Do you need to be protected from hotel porn? - Talk of the Town - talkofthetown's Blog - Bakersfield.com

Phil Burress, a self-described ex-porn addict, is doing what he can to ensure than you don't succumb to his former addiction.

To that end, he is trying to keep porn out of hotel rooms.

He heads the Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values and has pressured about 15 Ohio and Kentucky hotels to stop offering adult movies.

He contends such movies make hotels "as dangerous as environments around strip joints and porn stores."

He concedes he is unable to cite specific cases.

Hilton and Marriott responded by saying hotel guests have the options to watch or not watch, and they have the option to block out such movies.

Kathy Shepard of Hilton (some relation to Paris Hilton who has unwittingly starred in her own porn video) said of such attempts, "In their zest to have their personal morals prevail, they're eliminating choice for others."

What do you believe should be done, or not done, on this issue?

I think we should protect people like Mr. Burress from themselves by putting them into straightjackets and locking them in asylums. They obviously don't have a stable foothold in reality, or their own actions, and we have institutions to take care of people who are unwilling or unable to take care of themselves. Involuntary acting out can be medicated, or treated through therapy, or institutionalized so that trained professionals can help them with their disorders. Trying to get the government involved is like suing the DMV for giving you a drivers license and "permitting" you to drive drunk. People like Mr. Burress should be ridiculed, should be ignored, always countered by others, and should never ever be allowed into a position of power over other people.

I used to do collegate debate, and there was a lot of traveling involved. I've stayed in hotels and motels all over the place, and you can get a feel for the "good" ones and the "bad" ones pretty quickly. If we were in one of those that never washed bedspreads, never shampooed or steam cleaned the carpets, or would short us in glasses, towels, or other items, we would "rockstar" the room so that everything would need to be cleaned and/or replaced after we left. We would never (ok, rarely, but only by accident) break things, but the place would be in pretty bad shape when we checked out. The dirtier the place started out, the more lattitude we felt we had to really trash the place. There were plenty of times that when we left the room, the cleanest item in the room was the trash can. We felt sorry for the workers that had to clean the place up, but we would always leave a few bucks for the trouble. But we were always assured that the next person in there would have clean and fresh everything.

Second of all... I can't even afford hotel porn. Geez, some of those "extras" are expensive. Pay-per-view at the hotel in Chula Vista was $10 a movie, porn or not. We just took some of our netflix and our DVD-capable 17in laptop and saved some coin.
When we start talking about free hotel porn, then I'll have an opinion.
