John, I have to agree with Tiff, I have two dachshunds and they are the finest dog breed known to man, lovable, intelligent, good watchdogs. A dachshund eats very little, a good rotary mower will pick up their messes, and if you kick ‘em just right they spin.

Dachshunds as a breed are fine, but those two particular Dachshunds are right down at the bottom. The only living thing dumber than they are is their lumpy-dumpy owner, who couldn't train ivy up a wall, let alone two little dogs.

Labs are good dogs.

I think that you can have the smartest breed of dog, but if the owner is as dumb as a box of rocks then the dog isnt going to be the sharpest tool in the shed either... stupid is stupid does...

Mini poodles - amazing

Cocker spaniel - adorable

Rottweiler – very intelligent & loveable

Golden retriever – sweetheart

Britney spaniel – huggie bear

All of the above were intelligent in their own right some more then others!

BEST MIXED BREEDS EVER:

Cattle dog and traveling salesman;

Aussie shepherd/Rottie mix,

Cattle dog/dingo mix

MOST mixed breeds!!!!!

You either train them or you don't. When I see a dumb or unruly dog without any doubt I give credit to the owner.

I have a border collie/lab mix- best dog I have ever owned! Smart and sweet!

I have a mini dachshund- She is a quiet, smart and lovable little girl.

And I have a chihuahua- He is also quiet- loves to be held and plays non stop.

All my dogs HATE the ups and fed ex trucks that deliver to here often. But other than that they are perfect pets for me :0)

I have a Chinese Shar Pei named Mauser and he is so close to human its scary. He doesn't bark unless someone strange is at the door (he's a wonderful guard dog), knocks at the back door to let him in, stands up at my bed side and stares at me until I let him out at night( he knows I will wake up eventually), sits so gentlemanly at the dinner table and never makes one noise. I even taught him to eat off a fork, bites the food off very gently and knows the utensil can poke him. He sits, lays down, the usual, but something about his is just so awesome. He's 5 now, but still randomly gets his puppy instincts going and can be stubborn still ( a trademark of the breed). He loves to tug his rope, play with the soccer ball, and rip apart his Big Mean Snake stuffed animal. He even snores so loud at night you would think I had a roommate living in my room with me, haha. He is just so loveable and always cheers me up. He knows my moods and tries to make me happy the moment I see him. He's quite big, so I give him hugs whenever I can. I love that dog to death, he's my friend and I'm not embarrassed to say that because he's so awesome. And his wrinkles rock, too.

Yes, Mr. Mockett (and Tiffanilynn), POODLES!!! I have a miniature poodle and a toy poodle. Both understand dozens of commands. The mini is a great watchdog and a happy little guy. The toy can be a bit headstrong, but I swear he comprehends everything I say. He greets me at the back door every day when I get home. I love my poodles!

Laurah, I take it back about the poodles.

My german shepherd mix is very smart, my pointer/doberman mix not so smart. They're adorable though so who cares, right?!

Mia, the shepherd, was in the pound with 7 of her sisters at 8 weeks old because her mom had been hit by a car on 99. I've always thought that dogs from the pound never forget who rescued them and spend their lives trying to say thanks. I imagine every dog owner feels that way about their dog though!

I would say that Jack Russells are smart, but they are so high maintenance and distracted easily by different scents, other dogs, etc. My Tilly is like that outside, but inside she's very calm, docile, and controllable. Labs are excellent dogs, once they get out of the puppy stage, for they can be very distructive when bored. But I will have to say of all the dogs that I've owned in the past, mixed breeds (mutts) were the best.

Wife had a poodle named Pierre

The little sh*t was so damn smart it was painful

You couldn't go anywhere but Pierre was there

He'd figure out ways to stow away in loads, etc. just so he could "go"

But he couldn't work like the borders........... But of course, does that realy make them "smarter"? {haha}

My family's golden retriever/lab mix just passed away about a month ago.

I loved Sandwich (yes, his name was Sandwich) to death, but he must have been one of the dumbest dogs I had ever seen.

Maybe two smart dogs breed not-so smart dogs. Or maybe it was because we named him Sandwich.

Well, I have to say that my SPCA mutt is brilliant. He's completely convinced two intelligent humans to spend large sums of money on toys, treats and quality food. We climb "around" him when we get into bed, because he got there first. We'll spend an hour brushing out his crazy fur, only to have him run outside and rollin the grass, or dive into the sprinklers...and we don't care.

Once well-read and thoughtful, insightful people, we now have morning discussions about poop (quality, quantity and frequency); which combinations of food create the best poop and which combinations to avoid; and exactly how many seconds in the microwave create the perfect dog-worthy temperature breakfast.

Like I said...brilliant.

My min-pin (Miniature Pinscher) was the smartest dog I've ever owned. But I worked with Rex daily and he was a constant companion and a truck dog.

I had a Jack Russell/Pit mix that was as dumb as a sack of hammers. Overall I'd say that mixed breeds rule, however.
