Friends, Bakersfieldians, lend me your ears! Cafe Med is the most overrated restaurant in town. High prices does not always equal hiqh quality food. Case in point: My family and I went to the above mentioned venue one night, and it was cricket quiet in the main dining room. We scanned the menu as we listened to, not elevator music, but to the jabber of the young, blonde bartender ranting about someone being a "crack baby". She obviously didn't know that her voice carried over from the bar area, but I would assume that the cold glances from the other patrons would quell her nonsical remarks.
I love Mediterranean food, so I had to order falafels. Do the Condors need extra pucks? If so, you can find some at Cafe Med compliments of the chef. The traditional dish is made from mashed garbanzo/chick peas, rolled into a ball form, and then fried. The presented dish was dried out and must have been sitting on the counter for a few days waiting to be picked up by a server- any server. Since that was a debacle, we gorge ourselves in the warm pita breads with the tomato and cilantro dips. Thank God for the latter.
Next course, filet mignon and seafood pasta which were both excellent!
Finally, we ordered strawberry ice cream served in a martini glass. It was fantastic and tasted like Haagen-Daaz ice cream. However, we were told that it was homemade and this fact was proven a few spoonfuls later...As I swallowed the ice cream, my tongue felt a foreign texture in my mouth...I pulled out a 1.5 inch of, clear plastic wrap. Imagine if I swallowed it? I wanted to tell the server or restaurant management to be careful next time, but my family did not want to make a fuss. Too bad I'm not the same.
Overall, the food was good, atmosphere was only okay (based on the bartender's conversation that annoyed us as well as the other patrons), and the price was too high since I've had better seafood pasta at Mimi's Cafe! Also, beware of the extra garnishment of plastic wrap in your homemade ice cream!
